Man of Steel’s S Discussed at 5D | FLUX

This week’s three-day 5D | FLUX conference at USC (from the 5D Institute, the USC School of Cinematic Arts, and Autodesk) offered informative discussions about the new paradigm for World Building and virtual production. Among the highlights was the revelation Tuesday night concerning the mythology of Superman’s iconic S in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel by costume designer Michael Wilkinson.

Wilkinson explained that since they created a “neo-medieval” back story for Krypton (which included the creation of a new language), it made sense to utilize the suit design as part of the mythology. “Everyone on Krypton wears this suit,” he suggested. Using ZBrush and rapid prototyping, Wilkinson came up the blue/gray color and chain-linked look. “It has function and purpose and a logic to this fantastical world,” he added.

Wilkinson spoke as part of the Tuesday night panel discussion about Inception (imagining and developing the world). He was joined by production designer Rick Carter (Avatar, War Horse, Lincoln), Autodesk fellow Tom Wujec (who gave a separate presentation about the state of digital design for cars, shoes, virtual cities, and how creativity is trying to keep up with new technology), and writer/producer Rick Jaffa (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), who is busy scripting a sequel that will further the Moses story about Caesar.

Carter said he wished that World Building would go away as a territorial battle and offered a higher philosophical discussion about world and story melding together as cause and effect. He espoused Jung in describing Avatar as “The Wizard of Oz meets Apocalypse Now” or “EKG meets MRI.”

Not sure what to think about this. So Zod's suit is going to have the "S" too?

I was just reading that article myself. If I recall the black suit zod had we saw during filming had the z symbol on it. Though we never got a close look at it if I recall. But I think what the author/designer might mean is maybe symbols/crests on krypton are like nombel symbols like kights/lord had in medevil times. Or a bit like donner superman had different groups had different symbols?

We saw no such thing.

It's about time they show us SOMETHING from this film. They showed us ONE official picture, and that was back in August.

AP, Webhead may be getting confused with some manips which have been on duh Internets if I'm not mistaken. I'm fairly certain I've seen some myself somewhere online, probably the comics related sites no doubt, possibly even in some of their forums. But after all, that's still manips. Big difference.

Ok it may not be Z like i thought i was thinking Z offhand earlier. What i was trying to get at i still dont think its S on zod either. Looking at the image i got which was a set photo and found on some site i think it was collider. It looks like its a different symbol on his chest and not the S.

The Red lines mark what looks to me is difference in marks on his suit like how the S in raised as we see above. But still doesnt fully look like the same marking as S shield is.

So let me get this straight... The suits that Cavill & Shannon are sporting are actually common Kryptonian waredrobes and not military/soldier uniforms as we were led to believe??! If thats the case then I take it that wearing something that represent individuality dosen't apply to Krypton standards, huh? Don't they aleast have extra garment over those suits like Crowe does?

As for the symbols... Yeah, I think I agree with Webhead2006 on this one! There should be different variety of symbols on those suits thats if the entire population of Krypton are sporting them and I also assume those suits will come with different variety of colors! I also assume that those symbols are suppose to serve as individual or family crests as it were in "Superman The Movie".

Never the less, this information does have me baffled!!! scratch

Well we do know at least jorel has that one outfit with armor outing and different cape and shoulder pads, no clue on lara or others since we havent seen anything. But still i do think they are /will have different symbols for different familys/careers/military logos/etc...

On that thought to me it would be probably more of a formal wear kryptonians wear for special events, or in career/military dress wear for big meetings and all that.

In reference to STM, I'm aware of the various symbols that were displayed on the Council members' chests. I think only Jor-El had the 'S' symbol. One reason for writing this though. When you watch STM, have you noticed how much the costumes the Kryptonian Council had seemed to glow? Maybe they didn't really glow but there seemed to be some FX or something where they were not only white outfits but unusually white, almost unnatural even, hence my comparison to glowing. However, FX have come a long way since then so I don't think we'll be disappointed with this new version of such.

Maybe the article means to say that Kryptonians wear similar body suits and then variations on a known symbol. So if Zod has an emblem, it might look a little different from how Superman's does.

Not the best place to talk about it but still, I was actually hoping that he's no different from last time but with all this talk about his appearance being tweaked I hope he just look like Hulk period!

Keep in mind, he's basically saying Snyder and co. are wrong for not doing this thing the same way STM did. That immediately makes me question his comics literacy since, beloved as STM might be, that "family crest" bullshit was something Donner invented. If the only thing you're bringing to the table is a billion viewings of STM, you're already behind the 8-ball in terms of making something new and interesting. Bryan Singer handily proved that much.
