Does Ultimate Spider-Man Preview Reveal New Powers?
Submitted by Rich Johnston on August 24, 2011 – 9:00 am (7) comments
From the preview of Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #2 shipping in October, with art from Sara Pichelli, we see what appear to be at least two new powers from Miles Morales, the new Ultimate Spider-Man.
We know strength, agility and spider-sense are there from the Ultimate Fallout appearance, although he seems to treat the latter as a novelty.
In the preview we see that agility again, combined with a little spider-speed.
But then… what’s this? It appears to be… invisibility?
Invisibilityt in direct sunlight perhaps? Could be useful…
And is this showing spider-strength pressure…
Or could Miles Morales have a little shocker power in his fingers?
Not long till we find out…

Spider-Men By Bendis And Pichelli – Will Peter Parker Really Meet Miles Morales?
Written on March 9, 2012 by Rich Johnston in Comics
Is it a hoax? Is it a dream? Is it an imaginary story?
Or maybe a flashback?
Anyway, Spider-Men, the comic that Marvel teased to break the news cycle of DC’s Before Watchmen releases, featuring both the Peter Parker and Miles Morales Spider-Man logos is now being teased again. This time with a credit or two. Brian Bendis writing, Sara Pichelli drawing, Jim Cheung covering. And out in June.
And which Peter Parker is it going to be anyway? And what is that User Customized cover too?

EXCLUSIVE: One Out of Two "Spider-Men" Revealed

Marvel Comics continues its slow burn of reveals for its "Spider-Men" series by "Ultimate Comics Spider-Man" creative team Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli. In February, fans were treated to an intriguing image of Peter Parker and Miles Morales' Spider-Emblems merged together. In early March, the publisher added to the mystery with a new teaser featuring the silhouettes of two different Spider-Men about to collide. Now, in a CBR exclusive reveal, the "Spider-Men" web of mystery continues to unfold.
The newest image fills in the left silhouette with the familiar form of the Amazing Spider-Man, Peter Parker. While the right profile remains blacked out, it looks strikingly like the silhouette Ultimate Spider-Man Miles Morales swinging into the action. Although many have speculated "Spider-Men" may herald the resurrection of Ultimate Peter Parker, the teaser's revealed Spider-Man leans more toward a Marvel Universe design, with smaller eyes and a lither, more wiry form.
During the Next Big Thing panel at WonderCon 2012, Marvel Director of Communications Arune Singh addressed the project, saying, "People have made some educated guesses based on the logos we've shown," but stopped short of confirming or denying the possibility of a crossover between the Marvel Universe and Ultimate Universe. An event involving both universes would be unprecedented but considering the incredible popularity of Miles Morales and the upcoming "Amazing Spider-Man" film in July, it's understandable Marvel might publish a story linking the two characters to draw in new readers fresh from the movie. Readers will undoubtedly discover more as the clock ticks down to "Spider-Men's" June release.
Check out the image and solicitation info below and stay tuned to CBR News for more on Bendis and Pichelli's "Spider-Men."

New York Daily News has confirmed that Marvel will release a five issue mini-series, "Spider-Men," this July when a common villain brings together Peter Parker and Miles Morales. This is the first time that the two different universes have had any sort of crossover, making it a historic meeting in more ways than one. "For the 50th anniversary of Spider-Man, what everyone was looking for was a Spider-Man story that mattered," reveals writer Brian Michael Bendis.
He adds, "Someone had once said to me, ‘When I was a kid, I could only play Spider-Man, I couldn’t play Batman or Superman because my friends would say you’re not the same color, but I could play Spider-Man because when I fantasized about Spider-Man, he looked like me under the mask.' That was a big inspiration." How do you guys feel about this? Would you rather that the 616 Peter Parker had met his Ultimate counterpart? Sound off with your thoughts in the usual place.
UPDATE: Here is the official press release (containing a few new snippets of information) and the above images in hi-res.
This June, it’s time for Peter Parker, better known as the Amazing Spider-Man, to cross worlds and meet Miles Morales…the all-new Spider-Man? Marvel is proud to announce Spider-Men, an all-new five issue landmark story from award-winning author Brian Michael Bendis (Avengers VS. X-Men, Ultimate Comics Spider-Man), red-hot artist Sara Pichelli (Ultimate Comics Spider-Man) and acclaimed cover artist Jim Cheung (Avengers VS. X-Men), which brings Peter Parker and Miles Morales together for the first time. That’s right, the Spider-Man from two different realities—the Marvel Universe and Ultimate Comics Universe—bring their worlds together for a battle no one web-head could win!
When Spider-Man tracks down one of his deadliest villains, he suddenly finds himself thrust into another world where Peter Parker is dead…and there’s a new Spider-Man in town. As these two heroes learn the truth about their identities and their universes, they’ll embark on a journey that’ll leave them forever changed—and reveal a startling truth about a key player in the Spider-Man mythos!
"This year is the 50th anniversary of Spider-Man and we’re so happy that the stars aligned for us to tell a Spider-Man story that nobody has ever seen before," said Bendis. "It’s an honor and a privilege to present both this story and these characters to fans on such an auspicious occasion. The work Sara has done on Spider-Men is a step above the already high standard that she has set for herself on our Ultimate Comics Spider-Man series. For me, this is a celebration of the best character in mainstream comics and some of the best art mainstream comics has to offer."
Each issue of Spider-Men features variants covers by some of the biggest names in comics including Humberto Ramos (Amazing Spider-Man), Mike Deodato (New Avengers), Marcos Martin (Amazing Spider-Man), Terry Dodson (Avenging Spider-Man), Travis Charest (Captain America) and Sara Pichelli.
"Knowing how much Brian loves and respects Spider-Man, there’s no way I wouldn’t want to work on Spider-Men with him," said Sara Pichelli. "It’s going to be an explosive celebration of Spider-Man’s 50th anniversary—are you ready?"
In 1962’s Amazing Fantasy #15, the world first met Peter Parker and saw him become the hero Spider-Man in the Marvel Universe. Soon after, Spider-Man became a pop culture sensation, launching multiple television series, blockbuster films and some of the most popular comics of all time. Then in 2011, Marvel introduced Miles Morales, a new character of African American and Hispanic descent, who became Spider-Man in the Ultimate Comics Universe after that world’s Peter Parker perished.
"This is one of the biggest stories in Marvel history," said Axel Alonso, Editor in Chief, Marvel Entertainment. "Peter Parker and Miles Morales are two of our most popular characters and fans have been clamoring for them to meet—we’ve got quite a few surprises in store for both characters. This is only the beginning of how we’re celebrating Spider-Man’s spectacular 50th Anniversary."
This June, swing into action with world’s most amazing super heroes in Spider-Men #1.

Hit the jump for even more details on the planned crossover featuring Peter Parker and Miles Morales,as well as a cool new teaser cover by former Ultimate Spider-Man artist Mark Bagley. Josh Wilding - 4/11/2012
Earlier today, it was revealed that Peter Parker and Miles Morales will meet in the first ever crossover between Marvel's two alternate realities. For full details on the storyline, click HERE. After the announcement, Newsarama caught up with Spider-Men editor Mark Paniccia, who revealed that despite previous comments from Marvel that they would never do a 616/Ultimate crossover, they couldn't pass up the opportunity for one very simple reason.
"Timing was just right. There's only one 50th Anniversary for Spider-Man." So far, all we really know is that it will be Peter who ends up in the Ultimate reality. As for whether Miles will visit the 616 universe, he remained coy. "You'll have to read to find out." Marvel earlier revealed that the Ultimate versions of Aunt May and Gwen Stacy would have a role in the limited series, to which Paniccia added: "As you might guess, this is a story that's filled to the brim with poignancy for our cast. This will definitely impact May and Gwen. I think one of the best ways to answer that question is asking yourself how you would feel in a situation like that? And Brian pulls it off magnificently with heart and soul. This will have resonance. You can't expect that everything will be tucked away nicely."
Over at Comic Book Resources, Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso also discussed the upcoming series. While he was a little less willing to give away any specific details, he let slip the following. "All I can say is that the Peter Parker of the Ultimate Universe casts a huge shadow over Miles' spiritual and emotional development. What will he do when he's confronted with the Peter Parker from another universe? Well, that's the story. And there are a couple of things going on. First, Miles is meeting someone who's the closest flesh-and-blood thing to his actual biggest hero. Second, he's being shown a window into an entire new universe. That's mind-bending stuff for a young kid to come to terms with

Mysterio brings together two heroes in historic 'Spider-Men'
Spider-Men Exclusive Sneak Peek
Peter Parker is about to meet Miles Morales for the first time — and it'll be a common enemy who brings them together.
Mysterio is the core villain of Spider-Men, the upcoming miniseries bringing together Peter Parker and Miles Morales for the first time.
Sponsored Links
Mysterio, the nefarious magic man who has been a Spider-Man villain since the hero's earliest days, is the guy who finds a rift between the regular Marvel Universe and the alternate-reality Ultimate Universe, a plot device that is central to the upcoming Spider-Men.
Beginning in June, the five-issue Marvel Comics miniseries by the Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man creative team of writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli will feature the first meeting of Peter, Stan Lee's original-recipe web-slinger from The Amazing Spider-Man, and Miles, Bendis' half-black, half-Hispanic teenage hero.
Bendis says fans who have been following Ultimate comics religiously will enjoy the Mysterio reveal. The villain has been making trouble in that universe for a while, traveling incognito to and from the regular universe.
"Mysterio is up there with the most dangerous criminals that Spider-Man has come up against," Bendis says. "When I was a kid, I found some of his stories to be terrifying. It just got so personal. When he does his thing right, he delves in and gets deep into a psyche that doesn't deserve that kind of punishment."
The illusionist's helmet, which does resemble a fishbowl, only adds to the cool factor.
"He bought a gross of fishbowls at one point and is just sticking to them," Bendis quips. "Most villains, all you have to do is step out of their eye line and they can't see you. But he can turn his head and can see you from all directions."
The heart of Spider-Man, though, isn't Mysterio's evil plan — it's the meeting of Peter and Miles.
Peter arrives in a world where its Peter Parker died in the line of duty being Spider-Man, inspiring Miles to become a hero, and Peter will encounter all the people who were important to the alternate version of him, such as Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane Watson.
"Now we're in Christmas Carol territory. If done right, this is an emotional and powerful Spider-Man story that we haven't seen before," says Bendis, who was admittedly a little misty-eyed after completing a recent Spider-Men issue.
"The real meat of the story is (Peter) meeting Aunt May and Gwen and MJ and discovering this world and what it means to him. You can't walk away from an interaction like that without being changed, and Miles being witness to it all is the best lesson he can learn."
It has made for some great character moments, Bendis says. Peter and Miles will be teaming with the Ultimates (the Avengers of the Ultimate Universe) and Nick Fury, the African-American S.H.I.E.L.D. guy whom Peter knows as an aging white secret agent. Peter has the chance to be reintroduced to Gwen, who in the Marvel Universe died years ago during a battle between Peter and the Green Goblin. And Miles experiences sacrifice, responsibility and all of the things that entail being Spidey firsthand.
"I spent a great deal of time on one particular scene that rides the roller coaster of emotions, and everyone asks all the questions you'd imagine they'd want to ask," the writer says. "It was insanely fun and insanely emotional to write."
Comic fans have taken to message boards to talk about Peter and Miles meeting and the bridging of the two universes, but at least in-house at Marvel, Mysterio was the most controversial element in creating Spider-Men, according to Bendis.
It made sense to him, though, because a major crossover like this needs a perfect villain to cause chaos — i.e., the Joker in Batman vs. The Incredible Hulk in 1981, or Darkseid in The Uncanny X-Men and The New Teen Titans in 1982.
"I wanted something that reminded me of that but not be a ripoff," says Bendis, adding that the potential of other characters going through the rift, from either side, is "a big part of the story."
While stories of alternate universes may remind people of things like the TV show Fringe, Bendis admits the movie Pleasantville actually served as more of an inspiration for Spider-Men than anything sci-fi.
"It doesn't have to build and build and build to some sort of crisis like comics usually do," he explains. "It can just be this story hook that allows you this enhanced drama you wouldn't normally get that just leaves the characters defenseless to anything but their emotions. That is very appealing to me — as a reader, too."

Marvel's axel alonso comments on "SPIDER-MEN" upcoming event:

Alonso on SPIDER-MEN: 'This Story Will Have Ramifications'
Since the initial, vague announcement back in February, Marvel has slowly revealed more information on Spider-Men, namely that it's the first-ever meeting between the classic Spider-Man, Peter Parker, and the recently debuted Ultimate Spider-Man, Miles Morales —and the first interaction of any kind between their two fictional universes.
Spider-Men, a five-part miniseries by theUltimate Comics Spider-Man team of writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli, debuts with two issues in June. The villain of the series is classic fishbowl-helmeted Spidey foil Mysterio, and the story is also set to include guest spots from the Ultimate versions of Aunt May and Gwen Stacy, who saw their Peter Parker perish during a fight with the Green Goblin at the climax of last year's "Death of Spider-Man" storyline.
Newsarama talked to Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso about why the time was right for Spider-Men, waiting a dozen years to break down the barrier between the Ultimate and Marvel universes, Mysterio's role in the story and the impact the series is set to have. Courtesy of Marvel, we're exclusively debuting Jim Cheung's cover to Spider-Men #4, out in August.
Newsarama: Axel, immediately following the announcement of Spider-Men, there was something of an outcry from a section of readers over Marvel doing an Ultimate Universe/Marvel Universe crossover, what Joe Quesada said years ago would mean they were "out of ideas." As someone who has been at Marvel that entire time, was it ever actually a "rule" that the two universes couldn't meet?
Axel Alonso: There was never a rule. The idea of breaking down that wall came up at editorial retreats, but we never bit because we didn’t have the story to back it up. It's sort of likeAvengers vs. X-Men —a lot of people said, "How about we have the Avengers fight the X-Men?" But we never really had the story to pull the trigger. You want to do a story with that logo on the cover, you better know what the stakes are, why they’re motivated to go to war.
We always knew it would be easy to open up a wormhole and have the Avengers fight the Ultimates, but we never really felt we had a story to justify doing that. With Spider-Men, we have the opportunity to shine a spotlight on a popular new character that is still finding his feet in the Ultimate Universe, and that’s captured the imagination of fanboys and the general public coming face to face with an icon – a super hero from another universe who’s the closest thing to guy he emulates.
When Brian pitched us on the notion of having Miles Morales meet Peter Parker in the year we’re celebrating Spider-Man’s 50th Anniversary, our ears perked up.
Nrama: So was it the introduction of Miles Morales that was the clincher? Because seemingly, an Ultimate U/Marvel U crossover just has more potential in general now, as the Ultimate Universe started as something quite similar to the early Marvel Universe and has now gone in a very different direction.
Alonso: The pitch was simple: "Miles meets Peter." As we discussed possible places to take the story, a story of some scope, and a lot of nuance emerged. We realized that it was worth us breaking down that wall for a moment. Whether we go there again, who knows? Whether it's possible to go there again, who knows?
This is a smaller story, focused on two characters of great importance to their respective universes, one of whom has become an enduring icon, one of whom has captured the imaginations of fans and the general public, and shows evidence he can be one, too.
Nrama: You mention ramifications —it was said in early interviews that Spider-Men would have repercussions on both universes, and how important is that to Marvel, as opposed to doing a story where, say, no one remembers the encounter after it's over?
Alonso: There's no point in doing a story of this scope if nothing comes of it. Epic stories almost always do something to change the characters or the universe of the characters. You can assume this story will have ramifications, for either or both of the characters. Will we revisit that line between the Ultimate Universe and the Marvel Universe? There might be clues in the story.
It all comes down to story. The easiest pitch is, "Let's have so-and-so fight so-and-so." You have to be able to answer the questions that follow: Fight over what? What are the stakes? Why will people care? Where do you leave the characters once things have occurred? There has to be a reason for the punches.
Nrama: To that end, with the announcement that Mysterio is the villain of the story, there is a natural thought that Peter and Miles meeting could be revealed as an illusion. Was Marvel concerned about that kind of skepticism from fans, or was Mysterio just the right villain for the story?
Alonso: Mysterio is the right villain for the story. This isn’t one of those "it is all a dream" stories. We wouldn't go there. That would be silly. That's not an option when you trot out something like this, let alone on Spider-Man's 50th anniversary.
I was perhaps a little more receptive as editor-in-chief to the notion of breaking down that wall for this story because it is Spider-Man's 50th anniversary. When you have a significant moment in the history of your character, or a significant event going on at the multiplex, as we do with the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man movie, you need to take advantage of it. It’s the 50th anniversary of Spider-Man, and the 10-month anniversary of Miles Morales —I like that math!
Nrama: How much do you think Spider-Men is a testament to the enduring strength of the Ultimate Universe, which is now nearly a dozen years old and is still capable of getting people talking?
Alonso: Yeah. It's worth noting that it's undergone significant change. Back when the Ultimate Universe started, it was roughly around the same time as New Marvel started, and a lot of the names that you see in our comics and now consider to be elder statesmen, were young bucks carving a name for themselves; guys like Bendis.
More and more, I'm looking at the Ultimate Universe as a place where we bring a lot of new blood, creators with unique voices that come from outside the mainstream —guys like Nick Spencer, and Sam Humphries, and Brian Wood. The Ultimate Universe is a great canvas for a to show what they've got.
Nrama: Even if it was never a "rule," for a long time, fans never thought they'd see characters from the Ultimate Universe and Marvel Universe meet. And dating back to Bucky coming back in the "Winter Soldier" storyline, quite a few of what were thought to be unwritten rules have evaporated. As editor-in-chief, are there any rules that you have, or does it all depend on story?
Alonso: I hate rules. Especially in regards to the creative process. I think there are standards you want to set for yourself. There are certain rules of writing that have to do with control of grammar and syntax and story structure. There are rules to a comic book page. But I don't think there's anything healthy about making decrees like, "We will never do this." The key thing is, we have to have good reasons to do what we do. We have to stand behind it, we have to feel good about it, if we're going to make a major move. I am personally invested in Avengers vs. X-Men because I know it’s easy to throw those words together and make money; the responsibility is to make the story mean something. With “Avengers’ and “X-Men” on the silver screen, it’s inevitable you’re going to get some new or lapsed readers – you want to make sure it satisfies them enough for them to stick around for more.
I grew up as a teenager on the west coast with punk rock, so I'm not that big on rules or awards. Things like that don't really matter to me. What matters to me is the work, and the opinions of people I respect.

COMICS: Brian Michael Bendis Talks More About The 616/Ultimate Crossover SPIDER-MEN
This June,Peter Parker and Miles Morales will meet for the first time in Spider-Men; a series by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli. Here he talks more about their meeting, using Mysterio as the main villain and having Peter meet up with Gwen Stacy,Nick Fury and more. Josh Wilding - 5/23/2012
This June sees the release of Spider-Men, a series by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli which celebrates Spider-Man's 50th Anniversary with the first meeting of Peter Parker and Miles Morales. Talking to Newsarama, Bendis confirmed that we should expect plenty of other characters from the Ultimate Universe to run into the 616 version of Spidey. "Ultimate Aunt May and Ultimate Mary Jane and Gwen Stacy and Nick Fury are all involved in the story as well, so there are lot of extremely emotional moments that are going to happen that are almost surreal, but I think very cathartic. I think issue #4 was when Sara emailed me and said, "Alright, I cried. You got me."
"Nick Fury had a lot going on with Ultimate Peter, and his connection to Miles, and what the right thing to do here is," he adds. "Every one of these characters has deep, emotional investment into the Spider-Man mythos, some of them suffering quite a lot, and there may be room here for some catharsis that lets them move forward in a positive way. What is it like for a character like Gwen Stacy to find out there's another universe out there with another Gwen Stacy?" Who causes this crossover to take place? Well, as you may have already heard, the villain of Spider-Men is Mysterio. However, the writer was reluctant to divulge too much about his role in the series, but promises answers early on. "You will find out all of what's going on with Mysterio, and how this is connected to the Ultimate Universe, in the very first issue. We give that up right away, because there's so much else to get to. You will see what Mysterio has done and how he's done it, and for long-time readers, they'll be very excited; if you don't know a damn thing about Mysterio, you'll know exactly what's going on."
The story will have ramifications for both Spider-Men, although as a visitor to the Ultimate Universe, it's Peter who may be left most shocked by what he experiences. [He] gets to really see what the world would be like if he makes the ultimate sacrifice, and it's quite an eye-opener. I think it's going to be one of those books you're going to have to read a couple of times, because you'll be looking at it from Peter's point of view, and then you'll be reading it from Miles' point of view, and all these other characters." Brian Michael Bendis & David Marquez talk about their plans for Miles Morales in "Ultimate Comics Spider-Man"
What's tougher than being a Marvel Comics super hero? Being a legacy hero, especially if the person who preceded you casts a long shadow. Miles Morales, star of "Ultimate Comics Spider-Man" is currently finding this out. In Marvel's Ultimate Universe, teenager Peter Parker AKA Spider-Man died late last year while defending his beloved Aunt May from the onslaught of a number of his deadliest enemies. Miles, who had received spider powers earlier in a similar accident involving a spider bite, was on hand to witness Peter's death and that inspired him to pick up the mantle of Spider-Man.
Unfortunately for Miles, Peter Parker's death moved a lot of people, many of whom were less than thrilled to see someone following in his footsteps, especially a 13 year-old boy like Miles. The Ultimate Universe's new Spider-Man is a determined and heroic kid though, and he's slowly been winning the approval of some of his detractors. In "Ultimate Comics Spider-Man" #14 by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist David Marquez, Miles received two endorsements that will go a long way toward legitimizing his claim to the Spider-Man identity. CBR spoke with the creators about the endorsements and their upcoming plans for the series.
Miles' first endorsement came from Peter Parker's Aunt May. When she first learned of the Ultimate U's new Spider-Man she was shocked and horrified, but after seeing Miles in action with a Peter Parker from the main Marvel Universe in the "Spider-Men" miniseries by Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli her opinion began to change, and in issue #14 she unofficially passed the torch by giving Miles Peter's web-shooters.
"This is a cool moment for Miles. It's like being handed Excalibur because he's not just getting web-shooters, he's getting Peter's web-shooters," Brian Bendis told CBR News. "It's funny, a lot of people wanted this to happen in 'Spider-Men.' I got letters saying, 'Just have him hand over the web-shooters.' It's funny because I thought about it and went, 'Peter needs his web-shooters.' Just because you meet someone you like doesn't mean you give them your car. How is he supposed to get home?
"So it didn't seem appropriate for the Marvel Universe Peter to hand over his web-shooters, but it did let Aunt May see Peter with Miles," Bendis continued. "She was focused on Peter, but Miles was there too. So there's Aunt May looking at Miles a little differently and thinking, 'My Peter would want him to have these.'"
David Marquez added, "One of the things that I think works for Spider-Man in general, whether it's Peter or Miles, is the idea of responsibility being thrust upon you and having to up your game. I think with Miles, like Peter, it's hard for him to accept the role of super hero. He has the stamp of approval from Aunt May now, though. So before he very much felt he was an impostor playing at someone else's name. When Miles and his uncle Aaron met for the first time as Spider-Man and the villainous Prowler in issue #10, his uncle made a point to say that, 'This suit isn't yours.' Now the web-shooters have been given to him and it's [the] web-shooters and by whom that give him a sense of authenticity that he didn't feel before."
Bendis and Marquez aren't just making things "official" by giving Miles web-shooters. They're also opening up the space "Ultimate Comics Spider-Man" can operate in.
After seeing him in action, Aunt May thinks Miles has what it takes to live up to Peter's legacy
"One of the iconic and fun things about Spider-Man in general is seeing him swing through Manhattan. Thus far, we've only seen Miles maybe a few stories up, running around roof tops and maybe climbing walls. We really haven't had a chance to take advantage of the big sweeping New York vistas; the bridges and skyscrapers of Manhattan. I think more than anything else giving him the web-shooters opens up the world to him in a way that wasn't possible before. It also adds a whole lot to his ability in terms of fight and action scenes," Marquez explained. "They basically expand his repertoire not only in terms of geography, but in terms of the way he fights, moves, and finds solutions out of all the crazy binds he gets himself into."
Miles' new freedom of movement with the web-shooters also offers up Bendis, Marquez, and other creators a chance to continue to show the ways Miles Morales differs from Peter Parker. The character's smaller size and lack of experience means that the poses Miles adopts and the way he moves while web-swinging will be much different than the way Peter Parker moved and looked.
"One of the things Brian and I talked about the most when I first came on the book is that Miles is not as polished as Peter became. Over the the ten years that we as readers were looking at Ultimate Peter Parker we could see pretty quickly that he adopted all the classic agility that we were used to seeing from Spider-Man. He's very graceful and acrobatic," Marquez stated. "With Miles I've tried to make things look a little less polished and a little bit more out of control. He's able to take advantage of some of the agility his powers give him, but he doesn't have the smoothness and grace that Peter has. So when he's moving it should be slightly uncontrolled and almost like a crazy cat landing on its feet. The degree to which I accomplish that successfully is up for the reader to decide."
Bendis added, "This whole idea came years ago from Mark Bagley. Once we passed our first story line in 'Ultimate Spider-Man' he said, 'I've done 'Amazing Spider-Man' for years before I was on this book and this character is a different person. He's skinnier and younger. He's got a different energy level. So he'll look different when he does things like swing or walk up a wall. Plus for my own sanity, and so I'm not drawing the same thing over and over again, I'll be using different camera angles than what you're used to seeing in 'Amazing Spider-Man.' So if you really look at those first 40 issues of 'Ultimate Spider-Man' you'll see Bagley always came up with a new way to draw Spider-Man and it was pretty cool. We're going to use that philosophy with Miles. He's a different person with a different physicality."
Miles' new web-shooters may have helped solve his problem of how to get around the city quickly, but using them freely will lead to a different and much more costly problem. "Peter was a scientific genius and he invented the web fluid and all that. Miles is a very nice guy and very smart, but he doesn't have Peter's scientific acumen. So even though he's handed the web-shooters, a couple cartridges of web-fluid, and the formula it's not going to be easy for Miles and his friend Ganke to make web fluid," Bendis explained. "So I'm going to have a whole lot of fun with that. It's going to cost them a lot of their allowance money just to make web fluid. So webs are going to be relatively expensive for Miles. He's going to have to think about how he uses them. Peter kind of used them a little more frivolously. That's not going to be the case for Miles, which I think will be a lot of fun."
Miles' secret identity means he won't be able to turn to adults like his parents to help with the cost of making webs. Other adults like May Parker who know his secret won't be able to help much either. "Aunt May will appear once in a while. Meeting the other Peter in 'Spider-Men' and getting to say one last good bye to him and then bequeathing the web-shooters to Miles has given her a couple of very cathartic moments to help her deal with a terrible loss," Bendis explained. "So she's going to get on with her life. There's not a lot of room for her.
"There is, however, room for someone closer to Miles' own age. I don't think MJ can handle it right now," Bendis continued. "Gwen Stacy, though, is different. Peter took in Gwen so there's no reason Gwen can't return the favor by helping Miles. So that's something cool for him. He gets to have an older sister figure in his life if that's the way their interaction goes. It certainly won't be a romantic thing. It might be to Miles, but not to Gwen."
As a show of faith in his abilities, May gives Miles Peter's old web-shooters to expand his crime fighting repertoire
The Ultimate Universe's incarnation of Captain America will be another prominent supporting character in Miles' life moving forward. When "Ultimate Comics Spider-Man" #14 began Cap was still haunted by Peter Parker's death and ordered Miles to give up the Spider-Man identity. Miles, of course, didn't listen and on the final page of the issue he helps Cap defeat the Ultimate version of the Rhino. Cap responded by giving the young hero a sort of unofficial endorsement. That endorsement came in the form of an offer to train the new Spider-Man.
"Cap clearly had to do something because Miles was going to continue to be Spider-Man whether he was there or not. Cap is still left feeling that even if he tells the kid off and Miles dies tomorrow he's still going to feel really bad. So he's kind of stuck with him," Bendis explained. "On top of whatever Cap's torn feelings about Miles are, there's a lot going on in 'The Ultimates' that's going to affect Miles and Cap's relationship dramatically."
Marquez added, "In issues #13-14 we've been driving home the point that Peter Parker's death really hit Cap hard. I can't remember verbatim the lines Cap uses but they were something to the effect of, 'This was a kid. I thought he was ready, but he wasn't. I should have trusted my gut to begin with and not let him go on these adventures." And bear in mind this is a Cap that's very different from the 616 Cap. Ultimate Cap is much more old fashioned and hard lined. So the responsibility for Peter's death weighs very heavily upon him, and with Miles he views this as a second chance to redeem himself from the mistakes he made previously."
Cap agreeing to train Miles means two things. One, that he's about to be welcomed into the larger ranks of the Ultimate Universe's hero community. And two, Miles is about to be thrust into the drama of the current "Divided We Fall" and "United We Stand" arcs running through all three titles in the Ultimate line.
"In the past we talked about how with the relaunches we had a really great opportunity to connect the books in a way that was sometimes impossible during Millar and Hitch's "Ultimates" run because of the scheduling. So me, 'Ultimate Comics Ultimates' writer Sam Humphries, and 'Ultimate Comics X-Men' writer Brian Wood get on the phone every week and we talk stuff out," Bendis said. "We feel like it's a cohesive universe. What's going on in 'Ultimates' does effect the entire Ultimate Universe and Miles can react to it for the first time and try to envision his place in the larger Ultimate Universe.
"This is a great team to work with. I've been a fan of Brian Wood's for a very long time. He was doing very interesting work around the time we were doing our black and white stuff, and I've always enjoyed his stuff a lot. I didn't really know him though. We never hung out and I don't think I had ever been introduced to him at a show," Bendis continued. "And I was a big champion for Sam to come here. He really feels like he's got the stuff, and is a very funny guy. So we have a good time together on the phone. We talk things through and it's made the whole Ultimate experience unique. We have such a small, little universe to play in, it's just the three of us. So it's a lot easier to coordinate than in the regular Marvel Universe where there are literally dozens of us."
Adventuring with the Ultimates means Miles will be confronting first hand the unrest and social upheaval America is experiencing in the wake of a high-tech terrorist attack on the nation's capital in the pages of "Ultimate Comics Ultimates." It gives Bendis the chance to examine and tackle some of the nation's biggest social ills from the perspective of a noble boy.
"It's exactly the same for any of us when we're growing up and you open your eyes and realize that the world is screwed up. You try to find out what you believe in and where you believe it. This is an extension of that because Miles literally enlists himself. He shows up to fight with the Ultimates. A lot of people can respect and respond to that, but it may not be the right place for him right now," Bendis remarked. "The fact that his instinct is to go help is very heroic. It says a lot about him. It certainly solidifies Captain America's feelings about him. It would be very easy for Miles to stay home and wait things out or stay in Brooklyn and do what he can from there, but this is something else he decides to do."
Marquez drew "Ultimate Comics Spider-Man" #15 where Miles Morales will enlist in the Ultimates' fight against the various militia and anti-mutant terrorist groups trying to tear America apart. The artist is enjoying the chance to draw Miles working alongside the physically imposing members of the Ultimates.

"Cap is a huge guy. Thor is even bigger. Iron Man is also a big guy once Tony is armored up. And Miles is a 13 year-old who's maybe scraping five feet now. So I think that visual contrast is really interesting," Marquez said. "Beyond that it's really fun because I've really fallen in love with drawing Miles. I love the costume design, but it's also fun just to draw these other icons. When I started reading the Ultimate comics back in 2001, when they first started coming out, my two favorite books were 'Ultimate Spider-Man' with Bagley and Bendis, and Millar and Hitch's 'The Ultimates.' So It was fun to draw these other characters that I have a really strong attachment to as well.
"This is my first super hero event story and it's nice because you get to stretch yourself out beyond your comfort zone of the monthly book you've been working on. One of the cool things about the Ultimate Universe is that you're able to do these things that you're not able to do in the 616 Universe; like blowing up Washington DC and all these other crazy things," Marquez continued. "It's fun to bring Miles into the broader Ultimate Universe and really see how each of the events from the different books impact one another. There's a fun interconnectivity that isn't always done as well as it could be."
Immersing Miles in the world of the Ultimates creates some complicated problems for the new youthful Spider-Man. Chief among them is whether or not the super team will reveal his secret identity to his parents. Those aren't the only problems Miles will deal with in upcoming issues though. In issue #15 Bendis and Marquez introduce the Ultimate incarnation of Maria Hill who is a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent turned
homicide detective investigating the death of Miles' Uncle Aaron.
"I was thrilled to discover that Ultimate Maria Hill had not been introduced yet, and I was amazed that I hadn't introduced her before," Bendis said with a laugh. "So she comes in and she's an ex- S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who is now a homicide detective. We're going to find out why she's no longer part of the organization and her investigation into the Prowler's death brings a lot of danger close to home for Miles."
Marquez will draw Hill's debut in issue #15 and then move on to issues #16.1 and #18. Artist Pepe Larraz will bring to life issues 16 and 17. "Pepe Larraz is doing issues #16-17 because Sara Pichelli is healing. I believe she talked online about how she screwed up her wrist doing 'Spider-Men,' but she still heroically made it to the finish line," Bendis said. "So she's going to heal for a little bit and then come back with issue #19, which kicks off a a big arc."
When Pichelli returns to "Ultimate Spider-Man" the plan is for her and Marquez to alternate stories on an arc-to-arc basis. At the time of this interview, Marquez was working on issue #16.1, which sets the stage for Pichelli's return arc.
"We're debuting a new Venom story line for Miles, and issue #16.1 is our big prelude to that story. So in the grand tradition of a Point One it's certainly an excellent hopping on point. It sets up everything about Miles and big mysteries about what's going on with Venom and stuff like that," Bendis remarked. "If you've been following 'Ultimate Spider-Man' this whole time and know the whole Venom story you're good to go and here's a new chapter in it. And if you don't know anything you're just like Miles, so you're in good hands."
Bendis and his collaborators began 2012 by introducing the world to Miles Morales and have since done their best to broaden the scope and scale of the new Spider-Man's world. They've accomplished this by introducing him to his Marvel Universe counterpart in the "Spider-Men" miniseries, forcing him to confront his villainous Uncle Aaron, and plunging him into the larger world of the Ultimate Universe within the current story line. Much to the creators' surprise, their readers responded to these tales in an incredibly positive way. Bendis and Marquez couldn't be happier with fan reaction to Miles Morales and eagerly anticipate their readers' responses to future "Ultimate Comics Spider-Man" stories.
"On paper this certainly does have a 'jump the shark' moment written all over it. 'Oh, you killed the main character that no one had a problem with and replaced him with this other kid?' Then the convention season began and all summer long at every convention there were a bunch of people dressing up like Miles. There was cosplay and cool things on Tumblr, like other day, I saw a girl couldn't find a Miles shirt in her size so she made one herself. Miles Morales fan films have started showing up. I don't know if you've seen them, but they're kind of great," Bendis remarked. "Readers have fully embraced Miles, and me, Sara, and David couldn't be more flattered or touched. We love Miles so much and we're so happy that love is making it to the page and then back off the page. It's the best feeling in the world.
"Now that Miles has set up what his status quo will be, we can start bringing in some new elements, some brand new villains, and some classic Spider-Man villains for him to discover," Bendis continued. "We thought Venom was a perfect place to start. So while Miles and Ganke try to figure out web fluid there's going to be a lot for Miles to deal with. And we'll have Miles' first love interest coming very soon. Sara made me wait until she came back to the book to debut her."
"It's been a blast working on this book and I'm looking forward to wrapping up my first year's worth of work," Marquez added. "I've been working on 'Ultimate Comics Spider-Man' since January so I'm about eight or nine months in, and I'm excited to finish this first year and take things from there."
"Ultimate Comics Spider-Man" #14 by Brian Michael Bendis and David Marquez is on sale now.

COMICS: 'Iron Patriot' Makes His Debut In The Ultimate Universe This December
Ahead of the big screen debut of the 'Iron Patriot' armour in next May's Iron Man 3,Marvel has revealed that the character will be introduced to the Ultimate Universe in this December's Ultimate Comics Ultimates #19. Check out Adi Granov's stunning cover here! Josh Wilding - 9/10/2012
As a part of the currently ongoing "Divided We Fall" storyline, 'Iron Patriot' will make his Ultimate Universe debut in December's Ultimate Comics Ultimates #19. Newsarama revealed the cover by Adi Granov a little earlier today, although there's currently no word on who will don the armour. It's already being speculated that it will be Captain America, and that definitely wouldn't be a bad thing considering the awful costume they currently have him wearing. In the regular Marvel Universe, Norman Osborn (a.k.a. the Green Goblin) wore the suit during his "Dark Reign". Who do you think is behind the mask? "Iron Patriot Wants You To Help Rebuild America."
