Paul Giamatti In Talks To Join THE AMAZING SPIDER MAN PART II As...
Published at: Jan. 28, 2013, 12:56 p.m. CST
Beaks here with some breaking news from The Hollywood Reporter. Paul Giamatti (who can currently be seen in the terrific JOHN DIES AT THE END) is evidently in talks to play an unspecified version of The Rhino in the forthcoming THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2. Will he be a more traditional Rhino or R.H.I.N.O. from the Ultimate Universe? Your speculation is as informed as mine at this point. All we know right now is that he's getting thrown into the supervillain stew with Jamie Foxx's Electro and Dane DeHaan's Harry Osborne. Getting kinda cluttered there, folks.
Giamatti has actually gone on record stating that The Rhino was one of his favorite characters when he was a kid. "The Rhino was fantastic," said Giamatti. "He was, like, a Russian guy. He was real fast and he hit stuff real hard." Sort of the antithesis of Harvey Pekar.
THR is also reporting that Felicity Jones is in talks to play... someone. Will she be a third love interest for that pimp Peter Parker, who's already juggling Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy and Shailene Woodley's Mary Jane Watson? No clue. My guess: she'll play Black Cat. Your guess?
THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 swings into theaters, like Spider-Man, on May 2, 2014.

The Rhino is a villain I always liked too. I just hope they don't screw this up. Personally, even though I liked the 1st film, I'd have preferred that the Lizard had been more, well, the Lizard, like I was used to anyway, snout & all.

Hey! Without researching it, ain't that closer to the suit that we're used to? So I guess the reboot is like following a progression of evolution or whatever in both the suit & the characters as well. Hmmmm. Here's 'wishful thinking' that the same happens with SUPERMAN.

The shape of the eyes kind of strikes me as being closer to what the comics are up to these days. Does make me wonder what the boots/shoes look like though.

Looks like they ditched the garters and the basketball texture, and decided to go full-on "classic"-ish Spider-Man:

And you know, if 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' can change to a more classic look in the sequel, who's to say 'Man Of Steel 2' can't......?

And now that WB/DC have won some legal victories, they should. Like Colors pointed out recently with that animated feature that DC is coming out with, it showed Superman with the trunks, after the legal victory. I still wish they'd add them in post on MOS but they may not. But a sequel? And here's this. Let's say for the sake of argument that Superman's 'Kryptonian' suit does get destroyed toward the end of the film & maybe duh brothers already have themselves an 'out' for that? So Superman 'improves' his suit & it has trunks so that he doesn't look 'naked'. But my guess would be this would be at the end of the film, like with him flying off as such.
As for Spiderman, I think Webb & company did listen to the fans & are trying to fix things for even better box office reception. But Superman so far has similar complaints. So maybe a 'campaign' would be in order?

I am LOVING the new suit. And the news about Chris Cooper has me excited, adding something great to an already great ensemble. Here's hoping it heavily improves from the first.

I realize the comic costume is pretty outlandish and I also realize that these are spy pics taken from one scene on one day of shooting but... really? Hollywood has GOT to get over this allergy to costumes/costumed supervillains already. Nobody says you have to use that whack costume from the comics (and I'm arguably as close to a comics purist as you can hope to find on this forum) but for crying out loud, a HOODIE?! Really?

Re: 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' News *SPOILERS*
Ya know, it's funny. SPIDERMAN 3 caught all kinds of flack due to having so many villains. But so far this new franchise seems bent on outdoing even that but seemingly without the same condemnation. Why is that? Of course this franchise is also interested in adapting some version of the Sinister Six so maybe that's why they're being cut some slack?

Re: 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' News *SPOILERS*
I put some of that down to trilogyitis. For whatever reason, the third movie in any series often gets the crap beaten out of it. Don't know why. And in part I think that's what happened with Spider-Man 3.
The other thing is that I don't remember hearing that gripe from wide audiences. Core fans bitched about it (unfairly I might add) but I don't remember too many average moviegoers mentioning that. So hmm.

Re: 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' News *SPOILERS*
Certainly one of the most notorious 3rd films is SUPERMAN III. Sure, it holds a special place in some people's hearts, even some of us here on this forum but..........it was also the 'beginning of the end' for the franchise that Donner started. Originally to have had both Brainiac and Mr. Mxyzptlk as I understood it back in the day, duh Salkinds went instead with 'slapstick comedy', as evidenced by even the opening credits, as well as 'Gus Gorman' played by Richard Pryor. So in a sense they went from a serious franchise to a parody of itself. Sometimes it pays to stay on course, capice?
T-3 gets a lot of slack but it's actually got boatloads of action from beginning to end! The problem with it though is the storyline itself, etc. And that seems to be the problem with some franchises. Somehow they get off to a good start & then mismanagement, bad choices, etc., just derail the franchise.

Re: 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' News *SPOILERS*
I'm coming back to this. Remember I was the guy who opposed the reboot on the grounds that the Raimiverse still had plenty of stories to tell, plenty of new ground to break, all that? That shit holds. It was true then, it's true now and nothing will ever change my mind.
But the fact is that Amazing Spider-Man 2 looks cool to me. Sort of Ultimate'ish. I'm interested in this movie and I want to see what's coming. The action looks great, I'm pretty much acclimated to Andrew Garfield in the role now, Emma Stone pretty much is Gwen Stacy to me now, all that stuff. It just looks like it'll be a fun time at the movies. Looking forward to it.

- Let's just take spoiler stuff here:
- No actually I hadn't seen that. I haven't kept up much with casting either but I assume that's Harry rather than Norman.
Eh. I'm starting to think live action just isn't the Green Goblin's forte. Never has been, never will be. Still, the one thing I'll allow here is that Webb had to do something different from what Raimi did. Mind you, there are a lot of ways to distinguish yourself from Raimi's version that don't look as silly as that. So it's kind of a wash, I guess.

- But that's supposed to be Harry Osborne. not Norman Osborne. The Dad is the original goblin. So where are they going with this angle anyway?

- Actually, they had the PERFECT Green Goblin in Raimi's Spider-Man, who already played a role with makeup almost exactly what they needed:
Longer nose. Green skin. Purple hat. Green Goblin.

Re: 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' News *SPOILERS*
I don't get something here. Norman Osbourne is supposed to be Green Goblin first. Certainly before his son Harry tries any such thing. So why do they seem to be doing this the other way around & we've still yet to see Norman? Period! That is the $64,000.00 question!
Stuff like this & duh debacle that is Fantastic 4 are proof positive that ALL such properties should be handed back over to Marvel Studios without exception! Doesn't owner DISNEY have the power to pull anything off? Buy them out, find a loophole, whatever!

Re: 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' News *SPOILERS*
My guess is Webb wants to do things differently from the way Raimi did it. So we've got the traditional mechanical web shooters, a different approach to Uncle Ben's death, all that stuff. My hunch is Norman would've become the Green Goblin had it not been for the Raimi films.non_amos wrote:I don't get something here. Norman Osbourne is supposed to be Green Goblin first. Ideal? Perhaps not. But I can somewhat justify the decision from the angle that Webb had to play the ball where it lay. And honestly, I question using Green Goblin at all. That character and that family were so crucial to Raimi's films that it doesn't make a terrible lot of sense to use them at all in the new franchise. So I dunno.
I've wondered about that myself, actually. Apparently there is no reversion clause. "By such-and-such year, the film rights return to us no matter what." What kind of fucking nincompoop sells the fucking rights in perpetuity? That sure looks like what's happened. And not just with Spider-Man either but ALL Marvel properties. Seems the only reason Fox lost out on Daredevil was they couldn't put a new film together in time for the deadline. Otherwise there's every reason to believe they'd have the film rights to this day.non_amos wrote:Stuff like this & duh debacle that is Fantastic 4 are proof positive that ALL such properties should be handed back over to Marvel Studios without exception! Now, full disclosure. I'm not a lawyer and I have no idea how the sale/management of film rights works. I know a little bit about contract law but that's about it (mostly from osmosis) but that's about it. Maybe this is all completely kosher. And maybe it's all standard operating procedure. But Marvel is the real owner of these rights and as far as I know, the selling of film rights TO ANYTHING must necessarily exist under some type of lease more or less. So did it seriously occur to NOBODY to insert some type of reversion clause, buyout option or something? I mean, fuck me these contracts just seem stupid.
And like you say, why hasn't Disney used some of those mouse dollars to forcibly reacquire the film rights to X-Men, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four and all the rest? Shit, if I'm not mistaken the film rights for Venom exist/were sold independently of Spider-Man, who the fuck dreamed that up? You know?
Maybe I'm being too much of a Monday morning quarterback here but it just seems incredibly poorly managed all around, if you ask me.
