Re: Ultimate Spider-Man (beware spoilers)
As far as killing Spider-Man is concerned, I kind of like the idea. The whole point of the Ultimate universe is and should be to do stuff to and with the characters that you couldn't get away with in the mainstream continuity. So why not take a few risks and permanently kill Peter, replace him with a new Spidey (if you must), etc? (A) The Ultimate Peter has had a damned good run and (B) this is an opportunity for more shake ups further down the line.
Of course, I'm reading few, if any, Marvel comics (Fear Itself and Mark Waid's forthcoming Daredevil run) at the moment so perhaps my praise is misplaced.

I am pretty curious to see where they go with this. And who the new guy will be. Right now I need to caught up on last few new ucsm issues. I been about two months behind on my orders. So hopefully it turns out good.

It's VERY similar to Alex Ross' movie concept:

Never really liked that concept. Not to sound too purist but one thing I dug about the original outfit is how the red and blue suggest Superman's heroism and sense of self-sacrifice (traits you can pretty easily extrapolate from Spider-Man) which are belied by his public reputation. Ross came up with a cool design but I'm just not convinced by it.Apologist Puncher wrote:It's VERY similar to Alex Ross' movie concept:

Do you see the similarities though?
And Ross had to make it fit with James Cameron's ideas. Meaning a homemade costume, with "mesh" over the eyes.
Ever read his script?

From the above link- Of course we have Ultimate Comics Fallout to come and then a brand new Spider-Man, possibly with a brand new skin colour, in Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #1 to come.webhead2006 wrote:Here is an article about the last issue of usm with the Death of spider-man:

As in a different ethnicity? Hmm. I guess this relates to a major beef I've had with comics lately. For some reason, there's been a temptation to want to ethnically diversify comic books. And hey, I can understand that. There's a sense in which they should be reflective of society... which is made up of more than just whities and Euromutts. So superheroes shouldn't be just whities either. Fair enough.
However, instead of creating new minority characters (John Henry Irons, Static, etc), the temptation lately has been to supplant existing white characters with [insert minority here]. Same character name, different character and race beneath the mask. Get it? A good example is probably Jaime, the new Blue Beetle. I get the impression Ted Kord was disposed of specifically so he could be replaced with Jaime. Well, if this is such an important thing for comic book companies to do, why the fuck not create a NEW character for Jaime and let Ted continue as the Beetle?
I never minded John Stewart since he was part of the GL Corps for a long time and, in any case, the sheer nature of what the GL's are allows for different people to wear the ring. Fine... although I do find it interesting that DC never gave two fucks about John until JLU started up, but whatever.
Point is that if ethnic diversification is the goal, why not give these characters identities of their own instead of sticking them into an existing identity?

Re: Ultimate Spider-Man (beware spoilers)
Ya I get you man. I do wonder if the new usm will be of different ethnicity. I heard some folks think maybe the new spidey could be the black ben reilly character they had in the book a long while ago. Who was a research assistant to doc conners if I recall correctly. If not probably a brand new character.

It's a slap in the face of the ethnicities they are aiming for.
"Well, we KNOW you people won't support a new character of your own race, so we'll shoe-horn you into a pre-existing, popular character. Eat it up and quit your bitching!"
And then these same individual pat themselves on the back.

Re: Ultimate Spider-Man (beware spoilers)
Pretty much, yeah. In some ways, I'd find that more insulting than an all-white cast of characters, actually. I mean, who the hell makes these decisions, Michael Scott? Shit...Apologist Puncher wrote:thecolorsblend wrote:Point is that if ethnic diversification is the goal, why not give these characters identities of their own instead of sticking them into an existing identity?

So he's "African-American" even though he's half black and half-Hispanic???USA Today wrote:We have an African-American president, so why not an African-American Spider-Man, too?
Revealed in Marvel Comics' Ultimate Fallout Issue 4, out Wednesday, the new Spider-Man in the Ultimate universe is a half-black, half-Hispanic teen named Miles Morales. He takes over the gig held by Peter Parker, who was killed in Ultimate Spider-Man Issue 160 in June.
Whatever. This marks a continuation of an odd affirmative action trend in comics lately. Seems it's not enough to simply have minorities as characters. For some fucked up reason, they have to replace existing white characters- Blue Beetle, Firestorm, Dr. Mid-Nite, Invisible Kid, Marvel's Captain Marvel, Ultimate Nick Fury, Toyman (for a time) and probably others I'm forgetting. Call it racist, I don't care, but if these characters are so amazingly awesome, why not set them up as unique characters in their own right? Why attach them to existing superhero identities? Frankly, I'd think THAT is the more offensive choice.
Anyway. Whatever, won't be buying this anyway.

Re: Ultimate Spider-Man (beware spoilers)
I do agree with you a bit on the whole race things for characters. They could have easily just made this guy into another spider theme dude. Have him take the mantle of spiderman for time being to like a yr or two from now bring back ultimate peter and have two spidermen in the universe.
I will give ths new character a shot. See if I like him. If not probably stop reading usm. Though I am curious to see what his story is. What new powers he got. Also who will be his supporting characters. Also a little shocked it didn't end up being the black ben reilly usm had ages ago.

Or here's an idea, let "Spider-Man" (as an identity) be truly dead and use this new character under some other identity and different power set.webhead2006 wrote:I do agree with you a bit on the whole race things for characters. Back in the late 70's or early 80's, DC killed off the Earth-2 Batman. Permanently. They "replaced" him with the Huntress (daughter of Bruce and Selina). That move brought new drama, new conflicts and new friendships into focus. Plus, DC still had the mainstream Batman alive and kicking on Earth-1 so it was no big loss. Best of both worlds!
I dig the idea of the Ultimate universe in general but this is one of those things that I simply can't abide.

So he's PUERTO RICAN then? So why didn't they just say so?! Since Spiderman is based in New York, I'm sure you're aware that there are a lot of Puerto Rican people there & that's not meant as racist or anything. I've known several in my own area at different places I've worked at. And here's the thing, they don't deny their heritage. They freely admit that they have black in their background. This woman I worked with, she was part Puerto Rican & part Pakistani but she explained it like dating back to slavery hundreds of years ago, basically Spanish people inter-marrying with slaves. She even pointed out how the 'Rican' part of who they are is as in 'African'. I had never looked at it like that before but it made sense.
So if the Ultimate Spiderman is really Puerto Rican, why not just say so?!

Marvel is counting on "White Guilt" to keep the title afloat. It worked in the Oval Office, didn't it?
Sales will be decent for a while, but will taper off in no time flat. Watch and see....

Re: Ultimate Spider-Man (beware spoilers)
Cripes, they're determined to make this new character into as big a pander as they possibly can.Daily Mail wrote:He started life as a white science geek living with his uncle.
But now to reflect the racial changes in America Spider Man has been given a makeover - as a half black half Latino teen.
Miles Morales has replaced Peter Parker as the face behind the famous webbed mask, Marvel Comics has revealed.
In the latest edition of the Ultimate Fallout series he pulls back the disguise and shows his face for the first time.
Fans will have to wait until the official Spider Man relaunch next month to find out how he came to be the superhero.
But another surprise could be in the pipeline after his creators said that in the future they would not rule out making him gay.
Peter Parker first appeared as the superhero in 1962 - having been bitten by a radioactive spider he found he developed the strength and agility of an arachnid.
He was killed off by the Green Goblin in June in a controversial move by Marvel which left fans aghast.
Morales was inspired to do good after learning of the death and in Ultimate Fallout issue four he dons the mask and gets into his first fight.
Marvel has revealed that he does have a connection to Parker in terms of how he got his powers but he will have different abilities beyond ‘Spider Sense’ and the ability to shoot webs out of his hands.
Parker's Aunt May and Gwen Stacy will also be in the plot to help him on his way to being a superhero.
'The theme is the same: With great power comes great responsibility,' Spider Man writer Brian Michael Bendis told USA Today.

The irony is that a lot of folks still believe that homosexuality is symptomatic of some sort of psychosis or mental disorder. Even more believe that dressing up in a superhero costume and fighting crime vigilante style is even more so. So making a gay superhero has always struck me as funny.
