He's coming back: Hugh Jackman in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Picture: 20th Century Fox
LOOK out Sydney - Hugh Jackman is coming to town and he's bringing his razor-sharp claws with him when he films The Wolverine in his home city.
In a deal estimated to be worth $80 million to the New South Wales economy, the blockbuster is the latest big budget movie to be made in the state following recent hits such as The Great Gatsby, Lego, Walking With Dinosaurs and Happy Feet 2.
Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner, who helped secure the deal with 20th Century Fox when he flew to Los Angeles in January, said winning the film would generate more than 2000 jobs for Sydney.
"The Wolverine is expected to generate more than $80 million in production expenditure in NSW and create more than 720 jobs for NSW-based cast and crew, along with opportunities for 1200 extras," he said.
"It is a testament to our screen industry that Hugh Jackman and his team have chosen to come back to Australia after such a positive experience making the X-Men Origins."
The Federal Government has contributed $12.8 million to securing the film for Sydney, a bid that beat off Victoria as a possible location.
Although some production work is scheduled for the US, another $10 million worth of post-production work will be done here, especially visual effects. Both state and federal government incentives were provided to bring the film to Sydney.
The film follows the X Men Origins: Wolverine filming here bringing 1000 jobs to Australia.
That film was seen by millions of moviegoers worldwide and brought great exposure to Australia's screen production sector.

Hugh Jackman revealed to his Twitter followers this weekend that The Wolverine starts shooting in August.
Stage work for the film will be done in Australia and location shooting will take place in Japan.
"It's set in Japan," Fox CEO Tom Rothman said previously. "A great number of Japanese actors will be in it and it's based on the very famous run of the comics... I can just tell you on behalf of [Jackman], his goal is to make the ultimate, bad ass, berserker rage Wolverine."
To be directed by James Mangold with a script by Christopher McQuarrie and Mark Bomback, The Wolverine is scheduled to hit theaters on July 26, 2013.

According to Variety, Fox and James Mangold have found the villain for their upcoming Wolverine movie in the form of Will Yun Lee. The site report that - "details of the Harada character are being kept under wraps and production is scheduled to begin next month in Australia." - but of course we all know that "Harada" has to be Kenuichio Harada, better known as The Silver Samurai.
Lee has appeared in numerous movies and tv shows over the years, including the Witchblade tv movie and Elektra. He also has upcoming roles in Red Dawn and the Total Recall remakes.
UPDATE: THR report that Brian Tee (Grimm) has also joined the cast as Norubo Mori, "a corrupt minister of justice who is about to marry the daughter of a Yakuza crime lord".

Jessica Biel Cast As Viper In The Wolverine
Written on July 13, 2012 by Brendon Connelly
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Jessica Biel has signed up to play the role of Viper in The Wolverine.
We’re yet to find out how Viper will be presented in this adaptation of the story and which elements of the character’s long and detailed comic book history will be present. Deadline have called it “a juicy role” but seem convinced by the comics more than this project in particular.
Biel is expected to appear at Comic-Con this afternoon as part of the Sony panel’s Total Recall moment. Will somebody from the floor get the right question in and shed some light on this new casting?
Fox haven’t officially come to Con at all but they’re really timing their similarly themed leaks well and stealing a lot of thunder from the studios who have showed up.

Jessica Biel walks from The Wolverine
Though trade reports suggested she was as good as glued to a contract, seems Jessica Biel won’t be doing “The Wolverine” after all, according to a report surfacing tonight at Collider.
Biel was expected to play ‘Viper’, sort of a half-friend half-enemy of the hairy brute.
Talks between the “Total Recall” actress and 20th Century Fox have broken down, the site reported this evening. Fox and director James Mangold are now talking to a number of other actresses about filling Biel’s spot.
“The Wolverine” is expected to get underway in a month’s time – shooting occurring in both Australia and Japan – so expect the replacement to be named fairly quickly.

‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’ Actress May Be Viper in ‘The Wolverine’ Posted on Thursday, July 19th, 2012 by Russ Fischer
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
The efforts to cast Viper in James Mangold‘s The Wolverine have been more publicly complicated than is typical for a supporting part, but it seems like things might be sorted out soon. Jessica Biel was brought up as a likely choice to play the semi-antagonist Viper, but those talks broke down, leaving the role open and Fox and producers looking at other choices.
Now Russian actress Svetlana Khodchenkova, who hasn’t been in many English-language films but did have a prominent role in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (as pictured above), is reported to be the new choice.
Twitch has the news, and points out that Khodchenkova is a seemingly better choice than Biel, if only because her own background makes her a good fit for Viper, a Hungarian orphan adopted and trained by the HYDRA organization. In Marvel’s comics continuity, Viper is at one point assigned to kill Mariko Yashida, who happens to be the woman that Wolverine is in love with in the story that inspired Christopher McQuarrie’s script for this film.
The Wolverine also features Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima, and Will Yun Lee as Viper paramour the Silver Samurai, and is meant to start shooting next month. The film will hit theaters July 26, 2013.

Some wolverine filming details(take for a grain of salt of course):
EXCLUSIVE: Opening Scene Details For THE WOLVERINE; Plus 2 New Set Photos
New details about the opening scene of Hugh Jackman's The Wolverine hints at another villain being in the film. The movie will not only borrow elements from Frank Miller's "Japan Saga," but also from Brian K Vaughan's three-part series, Wolverine: Logan. nailbiter111 - 7/29/2012
My source has provided ComicBookMovie with the two new set photos and details about an explosive opening scene. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] My source has explained that this model is of a Japanese prisoner of war camp during World War II. This is all part of the opening scene that will feature an atomic bomb exploding!
We saw a blurrier version of this model a few days ago (Link) alongside some concept that art that also appears to show a massive explosion from an atomic bomb.
This would indicated that The Wolverine will not only incorporate the the Silver Samurai, but also another mutant villain, Lt. Ethan Warren. The character was featured in Brian K Vaughan's mini-series, Wolverine: Logan.
Lt. Ethan Warren - Was a POW with Wolverine in Japan during World War II. They teamed up to escape and found a Japanese woman in the woods. Warran wanted to kill her, but Logan threatens to kill him if he does. They part company and Logan spends time with the lady, finding she would not have harmed them. Warren reappears and shoots Logan, and tries to rape the woman. She grabs a sword and attacks him, but Warren manages to stab her with his bayonet. Logan recovers from his wound and attacks Warren. They each discover the other is a mutant, incapable of being killed. Then a plane drops a nuclear bomb on them.
In the present, Warren, now a flaming skeleton man, finds Wolverine in Japan and attacks him. After some fighting, Warren rips out Wolverine's heart and eats it, restoring his human appearance. Wolverine stands up and continues the fight, shocking Warren, who tries to kill Logan with searing energy blast. Logan is unfazed and advances. Warren begs for mercy, but Logan kills him, then passes out. - Marvel Wiki
Now here comes the fun bit of speculating. Will we see the mutated fiery version of Lt. Ethan Warren in the conclusion of The Wolverine or will that will be held off for a sequel? Chime in below, and also take a look at a second set photo. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Hugh Jackman Sports New ‘Wolverine’ Look And More Set Pics
Posted on 8.2.12 by Da7e
UPDATE: The Daily Telegraph has some photos of the POW camp set where we can see a shirtless, sprinting Wolverine, some other sad looking WWII-era prisoners and some sort of escape. Chances this ties into the WWII flashback in ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ just went up. Pictures at the bottom of the post, go to the Telegraph for the full set.
——-
‘The Wolverine’ will be shooting some scenes at Bonna Point Reserve in Sutherland Shire. They will be closing off the site to create a Japanese Prisoner of War camp. He’s down in Australia with James Mangold shooting the sequel to ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ which will feature more of Logan’s Japanese history.
We got some pictures of the new Wolverine look via The Leader when Hugh Jackman was on hand for a photo op with Sutherland Shire’s mayor Carol Provan.

What do you think? A bit shorter and leaner and more gel-based from the looks of this.
‘The Wolverine’ continues shooting Down Under before finishing up principal photography in Japan this November.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]EXCLUSIVE: Hugh Jackman Looking Grizzly On "Yukon" Set Of THE WOLVERINE
ComicBookMovie.com has the first look at Hugh Jackman sporting long unkempt hair, and a raggedy beard for his role of Logan in The Wolverine. Also, check out set photos of Picton covered in fake snow so that it resembles a small town in the Canadian Rockies. nailbiter111 - 8/2/2012
The other day I was informed by my source that Hugh Jackman's character Wolverine/Logan will be headed into town to buy camping gear. As you can see in the set photos below an old hardware shop in Picton has been converted into a hiking/camping shop. Also, a bar will be featured in the movie, that is why you will see a mural of a moose promoting "Ed's Bar."
Why is this important? What does it mean? Well a savvy CBM user pointed out that this could be scenes emulating the beginning of Frank Miller's "Japanese Saga" in "Wolverine #1." In that version of the tale Wolverine/Logan is seen in the Canadian Rockies pursuing a man-eating grizzly bear. During the eventual confrontation Wolverine notices that the bear has an arrow lodged in it's back. A closer examination reveals that the tip of the arrow had traces of poison and is the cause of the bear's erratic behavior.
Wolverine then seeks out the hunter responsible by picking up his scent at the bear's cave. That leads him to a local pub, "Josie's Bar 'N' Grill," where Wolverine identifies the hunter and a one-sided fight incurs.

SET PICS: ‘The Wolverine’ Shoots At Japan’s Zojoji Temple
Posted on 8.31.12 by Da7e
Nothing like combing through Japanese forums to figure out what’s going on with ‘The Wolverine.” Director James Mangold is almost invisible while star Hugh Jackman is making quite the celebrity wave in Japan.
But, the film can’t avoid making news when they shoot at Japan’s historic Zojoji Temple, where actors were on hand for some sort of …Yakuza funeral?
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
A summary roughly translated from Japanese (obviously Jessica Biel wasn’t there since she isn’t in the movie, so grain of salt this):
Summary of Day 1 Zojoji shooting. 7:00 Hugh Jackman, Jessica Biel, Will Yun Lee, Hal Yamanouchi, (probably) Hiroyuki Sanada containing remains of costume in the play some local morning. Verify Written By Logan, Mariko, Harada, Yashida, the Viper in a chair for the performers. And a few more details that mention a “grand funeral:”
On the way to Tokyo Tower and the mother and sister, to Zojoji. Then solemn funeral? I think … I can not pray in the main hall, I said that filming of the movie. Since it was set using the main hall of the grand funeral, I thought it was?

Funerals? Sure. Why not. I just want it to be good.

Will ‘The Wolverine’ Visit ‘Days of Future Past’?
Posted on 9.10.12 by Philip Sticco
Coventry Telegraph nabbed this leaked set pic from The Wolverine, and it has a familiar logo:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
The one on the left is from the set of The Wolverine and the other is a much clearer shot of what Coventry believes the logo to be.
Here’s a bit on the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning Coventry grabbed from Comic Vine:
In the comic books the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning was formed when Wolverine decided to re-establish Xavier’s institute, naming it in honour of ‘his long-lost love’ Jean. Wolverine is its headmaster, Kitty Pryde its headmistress and Beast the vice-principal, while senior staff include Gambit, Rogue, Iceman and Rachel Summers, (the alternate-timeline daughter of Cyclops and Jean). Xavier is still alive in the comics and appeared in the first issue to pass the torch and see his dream continue in new hands.
This would make sense, considering the end of X-Men: Last Stand, and it may even establish the alternate timeline for Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class sequel which is said to be using elements from the Days of Future Past story arc.
What do you think of Fox possibly taking this route with their X-Men films? Will they try and tie in the rebooted Fantastic Four as well? It would make sense for Fox to create their own little Marvel universe considering they have the film rights for all these characters.
The Wolverine director James Mangold, who has said this will be a standalone film, was asked how his film will tie into the X-Men film universe at large and had this to say:
“I can’t answer you now nor could I answer before, but after everything is over I can answer, and that, in itself may be an answer.”
So that clears it all up, no?
I didn’t think The Wolverine was going to cover this much ground. I assumed the story would take place between the events of X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Bryan Singer’s first X-Men film, without referencing either. Based on what we’ve heard, it seemed the intention was to reboot Wolverine, without actually taking him out of the established continuity. Now it looks like The Wolverine may be showing us events beyond X-Men: Last Stand and tie into Days of Future Past? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Your First Look At Hugh Jackman In THE WOLVERINE!!

The Kidd here...
Yep, that's Wolverine alright.
20th Century Fox has released their first image officially from James Mangold's THE WOLVERINE, and... DAMN!!! Hugh Jackman is ridiculously ripped, and hopefully set to deliver a much better chapter in the life of the character than what we were forced to endure with X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE.
I mean, what else is there to say about this imagery? Claws still look good?
If anything, it's to remind you that there is hope to be had that the ship has been righted with the character moving forward. X-MEN: FIRST CLASS was a big first step in getting fans to remember that Jackman can be an ultimate bad-ass in the role, if they let him. Let's see if that trend continues.

Surprise, Surprise: ‘The Wolverine’ Is NOT A Prequel
Posted on 10.25.12 by Matt Granados
Director James Mangold spoke to Empire Magazine about The Wolverine, and the most striking piece of information gleaned from their interview is something that’s been presumed to be true since the project’s inception and has now been proven false.
The Wolverine IS NOT a prequel film.
That’s weird! Considering set photos have shown scenes that clearly take place during WWII and with the recent rumor that Famke Janssen filmed a cameo reprising her role as Jean Grey, the timeline of this story is all over the place.
The director attempts to clear up the fogginess:
“Where this film sits in the universe of the films is after them all. Jean Grey is gone, most of the X-Men are disbanded or gone, so there’s a tremendous sense of isolation for him.”
He adds:
“That’s something that for me was very important, that I land in a very specific place in his timeline. I wanted to be able to tell the story without the burden of handing it off to a film that already exists and having to conform to it. The ideas of immortality reign very heavily in this story and the burden of immortality weighs heavily on Logan. For me that’s such an interesting part of Logan’s character that is nearly impossible to explore if you have a kind of league or team movie.”
Mangold succinctly describes the film:
“Japanese noir picture with tentpole action in it.” The Wolverine hits theaters July 26, 2013.
