'Captain America' Opens To $4M Midnights
By NIKKI FINKE | Friday July 22, 2011 @ 10:30am PDT
That's better than midnights for this summer's other original superhero movies like Thor and Green Lantern as well as prequel/reboot X-Men: First Class, which all did between $3.25M and $3.5M in Friday midnights. Distributor Paramount had been expecting Marvel/Disney's Captain America: The First Avenger to track

That means the comic book adaptation topped Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 for the day as the epic finale dropped a large 84% in ticket sales.
Wow.

It's still not normal for a film to take such a nose-dive.
If 60% is BAD, what is 84%??

I am not saying it isn't a bad drop its a big one. Just that with how much it made already it isn't really a bad thing for wb with the haul they made off it.

Films are made with the specific goal of making as much money as possible. Dropping 84% in one week puts a huge dent in that goal.
No movie company ever says "Meh, we already made enough money off that film.".

Box Office Report: Captain Shows All-American Appeal
George Thomas, Cleveland Movie Examiner
July 24, 2011
He doesn’t own the street cred of the Dark Knight or the broad appeal of Spider-Man, but Steve Rogers – a.k.a Captain America – does possess the all-American flavor of Superman and that’s likely what struck a chord with movie fans this weekend.
His big budget debut – Captain America: The First Avenger – zapped some of Harry Potter’s magic to take the top slot at the box office. Its estimated $65 million take in North America’s theaters made it a clean sweep for superhero films this summer with each one debuting at the top slot of the box office charts, according to box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian of Hollywood.com.
Considering the fact that Captain America can’t even be called a B-list comic book, it’s an impressive debut. Should the movie show some longevity in theaters, it will mark the perfect segue into next summer when the massive superhero adveture The Avengers, which is being filmed in Cleveland in two weeks, which features Cap, as he is affectionately called, along with The Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and others.
For the past several years, Marvel Films and the various studios associated with their films have slowly built momentum toward that ambitious undertaking. Now superhero geeks and fanboys only have to wait a year for the payoff.
But it’s also impressive that Captain America knocked off Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 in just the second week of that movie’s run. It still took in an impressive $48 million and will likely become the second film of the year to pass the $300 million mark next week, however.
Coming in an impressive third place for the week – Friends with Benefits starring Mila Kunis, an actress who started in television sitcoms but is showing that she has the power to light up the silver screen, and singer Justin Timberlake who continues successfully to diversify his career.
Rounding out this week’s top five – Transformers with an estimated $12 million and Horrible Bosses with $11.7 million.
Ont another note: the summer is shaping up to be everything the studios hoped it could be. Box office revenues are currently tracking two percent better than last year and attendance is up as well. It’s certainly helped to take the bite out of the frostiness at the box office that the new year brought with it.
Here are this week’s Top 10 grossing films according to Dergarabedian and Hollywood.com:
Captain America (Paramount Pictures): $65 million
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (Warner Bros.): $48 million
Friends With Benefits (Sony Pictures): $18.5 million
Transformers (Paramount Pictures): $12 million
Horrible Bosses (Warner Bros.): $11.7 million
Zookeeper (Columbia Pictures): $8.7 million
Cars 2 (Walt Disney/Pixar): $5.7 million
Bad Teacher (Columbia Pictures): $2.6 million
Midnight in Paris (Sony Pictures Classics): $1.9 million
That bold part is pretty funny, no?

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger Box Office Thread
Not sure I buy that. None of Marvel's characters apart from Spider-Man were necessarily household names until their movies came along. Iron Man? Strictly B-list most of the time... until the summer of 2008. Now he's a Marvel superstar. On that basis, Cap has always been one of their more well known heroes.
Oh well.
Oh well.

I love reading certain people's reaction to Cap & Thor's box office numbers as "nut dat grate". Really? Does every idiot with an interweb connection expect every "successful" film to top $1,000,000,000?
I would weep for this planets future, if I gave a fuck.

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger Box Office Thread
I long ago rationalized this sort of thing. One popular Apologist tactic, for example, was to down-play SV's success. "If it was on a *REAL* network, ratings like that would get it cancelled!" Shit like that. Ifs, buts, candy, nuts. Some assembly required.Apologist Puncher wrote:I love reading certain people's reaction to Cap & Thor's box office numbers as "nut dat grate". Really? The FACTS are that Cap had (in modern terms) a relatively low budget. That makes it easier to recoup the investment. Judging by the opening weekend, the movie will do just fine.
And speaking of opening weekends, and going back to the Apologists, I've read them make similar remarks about Cap as what you're saying. Keep in mind that Moneypit Returns opened on a fairly rare five day weekend back for July 4, 2006. And all it managed was $84 million during the prime of the summer movie season that year. As you know, it only did $200 mill domestic when it should've been closer to $270 to $290 million (and that only if you give Singer the benefit of the doubt). No Singerman sequel off of THAT type of "performance".
Meanwhile, Cap hit $65.8 mill on a standard two day weekend toward the end of the summer movie season. All that, and it doesn't have to do anything near Singerman's original expectations (ie, $500 mill worldwide) to be successful. Methinks Marvel will not hesitate to greenlight a sequel when all's said and done.
You tell me which is more successful.

Some of this can no doubt be blamed on www.boxofficemojo.com because just wait & see. When Cap's numbers have dropped this coming weekend, they'll lambast it like Harry Potter, GL, or anything else. Crap like, "It earned 'x' amount of dollars on 'x' amount of screens but that's a ___% drop from the previous weekend. It also doesn't have the attendance of _______________ from 2002 which actually made more when you factor in inflation. At this rate, Cap will probably close at ____ million." Box Office Mojo is bad for that crap! And no film is immune!
As for duh apologists, I saw over at duh Homopage in comments how their new Fagley, 'Scotty V', is basically 'recycling' this same sort of garbage when it comes to THOR and CAPTAIN AMERICA. That idiot even suggested that Comic Con fans HATED the new SPIDERMAN. Funny thing there, that's not what I've seen thus far! But consider duh apologists. Not only are they for the changes that DC is making, some are even suggesting that Superman lose the 'split curl' & be more like George Reeves was on the old TV series. But consider the source, I guess.

And keep in mind, it's only opened in a couple of other countries besides America. The bulk of the foreign gross from, of all places, Italy but that'll change in time.

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger Box Office Thread
Incidentally, I've not been able to find where these numbers are tracking. I suck at predictions (check my history on this if you don't believe; I figured Singerman was good for something like $250 mill in the US based on the name alone and boy was I wrong!) but I'm guessing Cap will top out at around, what, $180 to $190 million in the US? I'd call that sufficient justification to make a sequel. Hell, if Thor's getting one, Cap should definitely get one.

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger Box Office Thread
Domestic Week 01, Jul 22–24: $65,058,524
Domestic Week 02 Jul 29–31: $25,554,303
Domestic Week 03 Aug 5–7: $13,000,000 (estimate)
Domestic Total: $143,182,000
Foreign Total: $103 million
Production Budget: $140 million
Given how many successful movies have opened recently, I'm surprised by the $13 mill State figure. Guess audiences dig this movie after all.
There's an argument (and a credible one) that Cap's foreign box office shouldn't be viewed as a referendum on America's global popularity... but assuming there's nothing to that argument, well, see for yourself. And keep in mind that it has yet to open in several western and eastern European territories. I'd say this figure looks pretty good.
