Season 3 Of THE WALKING DEAD Puts Carl Center Stage
When The Walking Dead returns, look for the spotlight to shift to Carl Grimes as the threat to Rick's group shifts from zombies to the living. No spoilers book readers! Mark Julian - 6/20/2012
If you've read the comic books from writer Robert Kirkman then you have a pretty good idea where the character of Carl Grimes (played by talented youngster Chandler Riggs) is going. Foreshadowing that development is showrunner Glen Mazzara in an interview with TV Guide---
"We're interested in exploring Carl as a child soldier in this war against the walkers," said Mazzara. "He becomes a very, very effective, strong part of the group. He's no longer the young child who needs to be cared for and who needs to be minded. That Carl is gone."
In a separate interview with The Los Angeles Times Mazzara spoke about some of the viewer angst regarding Carl's seemingly disregard for his personal safety---
"Everyone wants to know why Carl's not in the house," he said. "Well, it's boring to sit in a house. And he's a little boy and he wants to mix it up and stuff. And he's walking through the woods and finds a zombie trapped in the mud and he starts doing what any Huck Finn would do and starts throwing rocks at the monster. And then later that is the same zombie that pulls itself free and kills Dale. And the writers were very nervous about that, you know? It feels earned, but it's a risk. Because Dale is a beloved character and if this other character is involved and responsible for that death, is the audience going to now hate Carl? But I thought the story was worth the chance."

'The Walking Dead' casting news: Dallas Roberts to play new character of Milton -- EXCLUSIVE

With Michonne and the Governor, The Walking Dead is bringing two of the most famous characters from the comic to the screen for season 3 (which kicks off on AMC Oct. 14). But there will also be at least one completely new original character to join the fray. Dallas Roberts (who also starred on AMC’s Rubicon and has a recurring role as Juliana Margulies’ brother on The Good Wife) will be stepping in to play Milton, one of the residents of the Governor-ruled community of Woodbury.
“Milton is the details guy,” explains exec producer Robert Kirkman. “He’s the guy that works with the Governor, who is monitoring all situations and is trying to help the Governor make sense of this world that they’re living in. He’s not exactly a scientist, but he’s a smart guy that is trying to find out how zombies behave. Watching him do his little experiments is going to be a lot of fun.” (Zombie experiments? Here’s hoping Bub from Day of the Dead makes a cameo as one of the subjects.)
According to showrunner Glen Mazzara, in Milton we will see an example of someone finding a way to make himself useful, even if he is not necessarily a physically imposing presence. “We were examining, ‘How do people survive in this apocalyptic world, and what can people contribute?’” says Mazzara. “And we didn’t think it was plausible that every single character we meet is an efficient zombie killer. We just didn’t buy that everyone we know would be active and deft enough to kill every walker. We wanted to show how other people survive, and Dallas has come in and helped us establish that character. He just adds a lot of heart and humanity to Woodbury, which further complicates what that is. That is a real town with real people and real survivors. It’s not necessarily a group of bad guys.”
For more detailed info on Milton and all of season 3, check out Entertainment Weekly’s Walking Dead cover story — on stands later this week. (You can also see an exclusive — and hilarious — video of Andrew Lincoln mocking the Governor right here.) And for more Walking Dead news and views, follow me on Twitter @DaltonRoss.

Saw the first season last year but never got around to following it up. I'm gonna try to play catch up but I'm gonna rewatch S1 first just as a refresher.

AMC is showing seasons 1-3 (Up to the mid-season finale), on New years Eve and New Years Day.

Re: The Walking Dead
Good to know! I've already finished rewatching S1, now moving onto S2 on Netflix Instant so I should definitely be prepped when S3 repeats around then.
