When I was growing up, it also signified 'Earth-2' Batman. Just like they showed the difference between the suits of the Earth-1 & Earth-2 Supermen respectively. I think that explanation held for the entirety of my growing up & even beyond. Maybe you have a point about the animated series. I can't claim to have even watched that enough to amount to anything but nevertheless, at some point someone made that decision for the character. Period. And it's like they ain't bringing it back. Ever. Which I hope ain't true! And just look at how BLAND the Bat-signal is in the Nolan films. It just as well be cloud formations for all that you can make out of it. Sucks indeed!
