Producer Charles Roven on Batman and Superman
by SuperHeroHype
Jan 5th, 2011The Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder films
SuperHeroHype brother site ShockTillYouDrop.com talked to Season of the Witch producer Charles Roven, who was asked about two of his upcoming projects, Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises and Zack Snyder's Superman:
Shock: Can you talk a little more about what's next for you? You mentioned Superman and, of course, there's The Dark Knight Rises. It seems like a big time for DC Comics on the big screen.
Roven: And they've got the Green Lantern coming out, too. But we're really excited to be doing another film with Chris Nolan and Emma Thomas. We've had great experiences working together. I just really enjoy making those films and being there to help Chris try and realize this amazing vision that he's had for his Batman series. I'm also really thrilled that I was invited into the Superman process as well. It's going to be interesting. Those are two really big films and they both have an exciting and eager fanbase that's waiting. I've been a huge fan of Zack Snyder's since, really, Dawn of the Dead and had a great meeting with him that resulted in us working together. Chris and Emma are also producing that film with me as is Deborah Snyder. So we're having a really great time working on both this films right now.
Shock: Is the thought that they might have a shared universe one day?
Roven: No. That may be in somebody's mind but right now the Batman lives in his world and the Superman lives in his world. Those stories are those stories and we haven't thought beyond each individual picture.
Shock: Christian Bale mentioned recently that he felt that the Batman films would wrap up with the third one.
Roven: Well, I think that Chris Nolan has said that he wanted to make a trilogy and this is a trilogy. As far as we all know, this is it. This is the trilogy. The Dark Knight Rises is the third part of what Chris created with Batman Begins and we're not looking past that. I've said this about Chris before: I've never known Chris to do anything but focus on the movie he's making. He gets completely immersed in the movie he's doing and I know that all he's thinking about right now when it comes to Batman, the Dark Knight Rises, is making it the best movie he can. He's not thinking, "will there be another one?" And he's already said, in his mind, it's a trilogy. So I think he's just focusing on making this the best he possibly can and that's it.
Shock: Knowing that he's sort of famous for that single-movie focus, how hard is it getting time balanced out for godfathering Superman as well?
Roven: It's a huge workload, but there's a way we've been talking about how to make it work. Hopefully, there will be a little bit of time in-between the start of production on both of them. Right now Dark Knight Rises is coming out in the summer of 2012 and Superman is coming out in the winter of 2012. So hopefully -- and we're just at the beginning phases of both of them. We haven't even entered official pre-production on either one of them -- there will be a little bit of room. They're both going to be long shoots. I'm sure there's going to be some overlap, but hopefully there'll be as little overlap as possible.
Shock: One last Superman question: There are persistent rumors of a CGI Superman. Can you comment on that?
Roven: You know, one of the things that you probably know about me and us working on this movie is that the rumors are the rumors and when we have something to say, we'll say it. Until we do, there's nothing to say.

And yet, I'll bet there's some bean-counter at WB who wonders why folks are more excited about the Avengers-related films than they are the DCU films. Couldn't possibly be because Marvel seems to know what the fuck they're doing while WB is plodding along like a retarded puppy in search of a milk bone.Shock Till You Drop wrote:Roven: No. That may be in somebody's mind but right now the Batman lives in his world and the Superman lives in his world. It ain't 1992 anymore, guys. Having characters in their own little unique universes that never cross over ain't gonna cut it anymore.

Re: Charles roven on superman and batman movies!!
i know i would def love to see a shared universe for dc like marvel is trying to do. But with the mess dc hero films are in or no solid development with anything most of the time. It sucks it just not happening. It would have been great if DCE happened alot sooner. And they have meetings with writers for X/Y films all meet up and find ways how to make everyone connected but not hurt each film director's vision on things and all that. Maybe some day we can see it happen.

RE: Charles Roven On Superman & Batman Movies!!
The 'unique universes' point actually reminds me of.....PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING! At least at ONE point in time. The current entity know as 'WWE' was for the LONGEST time the 'WWF' but apparently Vince McMahon had some kind of challenges from the 'WORLD WILDLIFE FUND'. I personally don't see why Vince had to change his company's name as HIS WWF had been in existence since the 60's! I guess he caved to the tree-huggers?! But what's THAT got to do with THIS, you say?!
Back in the mid-80's, Vince 'Jr.' took his show NATIONWIDE. He stole talent from other organizations, INCLUDING Hulk Hogan! But here's the point. For a good few years, he acted as if the WWF were the ONLY game in town! It was SO noticeable that even the letters pages of wrestling magazines were RIPE with the controversy (if only they'd had the Internet THEN, huh?). It actually took RIC FLAIR going to the WWF for the FIRST time to really loosen things up, but there were also the incidents involving 'Double-J' Jeff Jarrett & his father's organization as well. However, up until then, there was a VERY popular NWA which 'evolved' into WCW & an 'on-the-way-out' AWA. However, Vince would have you believe only THEY existed! But when he changed, he changed, even coming on WCW TV when he bought them out! Now, since he tried to wipe out his competition, he competes against himself with his various factions, although 'TNA" has sort of filled the void.
So eventually Vince had to acknowledge the existence of OTHER universes. Apparently Nolan hasn't 'got the memo' yet!

Unusual, isn't it. To the point of clarifying it so. And it was supposedly Nolan & his posse who got Superman back up. Reading that it seems a cross over may be possible if Superman does well, but he sure won't be meeting Bale's Batman.
It's funny when you remember the JLA debacle. More to that than met the eye, I'm still certain.
Have to say though, Roven referring to Supes as "The Superman" sends a chill down my spine. WTF?
We better be getting a reconizable Superman.......

Here, check out the LATEST censoring from duh Homopage:
http://www.supermanhomepage.com/news.php?readmore=9063#comments
It seems this 'Ultimate Deathstar' should be posting HERE, not THERE! To fill you in, he spoke back AGAINST Fulcon's suggestion to use Brandon "BJ' Routhman for the new film, even referring to Blandon as 'BJ'. Obviously he incurred the wrath of Eunuch. What about Fagley? HE supposedly has 'left' the 'Speeding Bulletin' that Eunuch does but so far I haven't researched it. Anyway, i guess just another day at the office at duh Homopage!

Re: Charles roven on superman and batman movies!!
It does suck we don't get any film cross overs yet here for dc. But on the hand of the producers/directors/exec you can see with all the non status of characters like flash/ww/aquaman and no solid timeframe/development. Its hard to write/work on or get characters appearing in each other films. When they are still struggling to figure out what to do with each character solo. Hopefully some point once supes reboot is out/if gl is a big hit. We can start something off from gl/supes reboot standings with the next batch of dc hero films. It just blows waiting and waiting to see if wb/dc is getting off their butts and are serious.

Re: Charles roven on superman and batman movies!!
I still can't help thinking things would be a lot different for DC films if they hadn't gone done the Singer path, especially in light of Marvel's then successes. A genuine, well done and accurate continuation of the Donnerverse MAY have worked in the hands of a competent film maker, but look what we got. At the very, very least, Christopher Reeve's legacy deserved much better.
Back to square one.
