Re: Misc. Movies
This can sort of serve as a "last movie you watched" thread? If so, here's what I watched last...
Dr. No (1962)
So I've been holding off on watching any of the Bond films for over a year so I can start a countdown of sorts to Skyfall, seeing the films on a fresher note especially since this is the first time I have ever owned them on blu-ray. Recently I watched Raiders of the Lost Ark on the big screen and I was very impressed with how they remastered that flick, almost looking like a brand new flick (definitely looking forward to the blu-ray). Turns out the same group remastered the Bond films, so seeing Dr. No given the same treatment is pretty amazing.
Besides looking great, overall this a pretty solid debut although it's really not as good as the book. It takes a little longer than it should for Bond to sneak in the villain's island. The most unfortunate part is that the air duct sequence has been trimmed down and altered to the point that it's merely Bond escaping imprisonment, making the villain Dr. No come off incompetent (in the book, the air duct sequence was actually an experiment by Dr. No, seeing how much pain Bond could take through the heat, cold, water, and tarantulas crawling within).
Overall what really carries this flick is Sean Connery's performance, everything else is just fine but it's he who elevates it. In an interview when the director was asked what made this film a big hit, he gave three reasons: Sean Connery, Sean Connery, and Sean Connery. Hard not to argue with that. Luckily for the next couple of entries Connery wouldn't be the only thing to hold them up.
