Entertainment Weekly article Feb252011_1143_308x396

Entertainment Weekly wrote:For fans of superhero movies, the next two years could bring the biggest and broadest array of films the genre has ever produced — and hopefully the very best, as well. Call it The Spandex Singularity — an unprecedented concentration of super-star superhero properties, resulting from the intensifying geek takeover of pop culture. This year gives Fox’s X-Men: First Class, a reboot (in prequel form) of the franchise that helped launch the modern era of superhero cinema back in 2000. Then come three new properties that will try to expand the category’s horizons: Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger, both from Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures, and Warner Bros.’ Green Lantern starring Ryan Reynolds. Next year: The heavyweights. The Wolverine. The Amazing Spider-Man. The Avengers. The Dark Knight Rises. And then, capping the year, an as-yet-untitled movie that will try to restore the king of all the superheroes to his pop glory: Superman.

The new issue of Entertainment Weekly previews the onslaught of box office super-friends about to descend upon us — and it also brings you the first interview with British actor Henry Cavill (The Tudors) since director Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) and producer Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight) tapped him to become Hollywood’s newest Man of Steel. Among the topics of discussion: Cavill’s audition, which included shooting a screen test wearing a replica of Christopher Reeve’s once impressive, now dated Superman suit. “If you can put on that suit and pull it off,” says Snyder, ‘that’s an awesome achievement.” Cavill was feeling less than super in the moment, at least about his ability to fill out the costume: He had just finished shooting a film with Bruce Willis called The Cold Light Of Day, and the part required to him to shed the impressive abs of steel and muscle tone he had put on for the movie he made right before that, the forthcoming mythic fantasy Immortals. As an assistant helped to him put on the Super-suit, Cavill recalls: “All I could think was: Oh, god. They’re going to look at me and go ‘He’s not Superman. Not a chance.’ The actor inside me was going: You’re not ready! You’re not ready!” Snyder saw something — or rather someone — different. “He walked out, and no one laughed,” says the director. “Other actors put that suit on, and it’s a joke, even if they’re great actors. Henry put it on, and he exuded this kind of crazy-calm confidence that just made me go ‘Wow.’ Okay: This was Superman.’”

As others have pointed out, they could've screen-tested Cavill in anything they wanted. The fact that it's a Chris Reeve replica outfit gives me hope. I don't need to see the Reeve outfit again (although Lord knows I wouldn't say no) but the main issue has to be sticking to the traditional version of The Suit that we've seen for decades in the comics. And it looks like that's what could be happening here.

I'm more concerned about The Suit than I am about who plays Lois, y'all.

This here's the complete article. Posting the image here would completely screw up the page so click on the link to read it.

Yeah, thanks mate, good read. Shows a promising sense of enthusiasm.

I must be showing my age because I don't see Reeve as looking "dated" though. I just see Superman.

I sense an implication that somehow Reeve's outfit was on par with Adam West's Batman!.....and don't get me started on them dragging Reeve into it again...already! Oh well, at least Ruth is all but forgotten.

That was actually my favorite part of the article!! Singerman was basically regarded a costly misfire. It rated a paragraph and then it got dropped like a hot potato (much like WB tried to do back in 2006, as I recall). Plus, EW cited the $270 mill price tag. To let Singer save a little face, I guess, they invoked the worldwide Singerman gross of $391 million for their comparison but, in essence, EW is saying Singerman lost $70 million in the US and $79 million internationally.

No matter how much the damned movie cost, YOU KNOW the situation was pretty effin' bad when EW, a Time-Warner publication if I'm not mistaken, calls Singerman a complete flop.

Plus, it's good to know that the Joe Manganiello rumors had teeth to 'em after all. If nothing else, it tells us Snyder is either okay with or else is actively seeking a Superman who, y'know, LOOKS like Superman for once. It'll be a nice change of pace, I think.

As ever, the reboot is guilty until proven innocent but Snyder was wise to do this cover story as his opening salvo.

Yes, and after "Watchman" I'm not going to panic just yet re the look of Superman, or the action quotient after the "more physical" comment from Snyder recently.

This is why I believe these rumours of "script trouble" etc mean little, tbh. There's clowns out there with noses out of joint because their beloved Singerman is now OFFICIALLY regarded as a FAIL. They told us the sequel was a sure thing, despite the protracted silence from Warners. Look at how they mobilised themselves when it looked like Singerman was being scuttled in favor of the "JLA" movie. Christ, Eunuch even ran tales to the Smallville producers.

Those losers will continue to throw mud at the upcoming film out of spite.

I have to agree with Father here. I haven't read all of duh comments at duh Homopage but I have seen more than enough! The Snyder bashing has already begun. The Welling bashing continues as well as support for Welling. One 'brain-dead sheeple' even suggested Brandon 'BJ' Routhman to play BIZARRO! I tell you the truth, it can get really depressing reading their crap! Surprisingly though, some apologists seen to be getting on board with Henry Cavill as Superman, yet some are saying he ripped off David Hasselhof's look! Another drawback is that there seems to be a lot of disdain for Zack Snyder. Just read some of the comments & you'll see.

It seems EUNUCH is now on the Cavill bandwagon:

I'm thinking about installing a new rule: Tom Welling cannot be mentioned on any news item about the new movie.

Let it go people! Tom is the Man of Steel on TV. Henry Cavill will be the Man of Steel in the movie. End of story!"

Get this! One apologist on one of these boards suggested a 'report user' button, to report realists I guess, & 'swrighty' agreed! I guess the rollercoaster ride has begun! Expect more crapola as things develop! Some things never change! Rolling Eyes

I get EW every week, so I saw this on Saturday when I got it. One thing that stood out to me was this, proving once again that I was r-i-g-h-t:

He's about to begin getting Super-ripped at Gym Jones, a fitness boutique specializing in building action-hero physiques.

Here's what I said three weeks ago:

Just curious as to what people want Cavill to look like in the Reboot?

Zack Snyder had the entire cast, including HIMSELF, workout here:

And as you saw in 300, it WORKED.

Yessir.

Good one, and isn't it reassuring to see them put in the hard work, doing it for real.

Especially how the last guy had his muscles sewed into his costume.....what a fuckin disgrace.
