GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE Already Struggling At The US Box Office

The weekend is far from over, but Friday's boxoffice figures indicate that Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance will fail to reach the top spot in the US. It may in fact struggle to even hold on to second place! Hit the jump for details. Josh Wilding - 2/18/2012

Deadline have their early analysis of last night at US box office, and it looks as if Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance will struggle to reach the top spot this weekend as it faces off against holdover The Vow. A big budget 3D superhero movie being beaten by a critically panned romantic comedy is something of an embarrassment for the studio. It's likely that it will only just end up missing out, although one Sony exec told them yesterday that it, "could go higher as the night goes on". The gap is a narrow one, but the first movie made $45M during its opening weekend in the US and over $115M in total, considerably more than the Neveldine/Taylor helmed sequel is expected to earn. Whether this is down to the overwhelmingly negative reviews or the bad word of mouth left over from the last installment is unlear, although one rival exec has their own theory: "Once they started advertising it with Nic Cage, it went downhill."

Here are the early results and predictions also courtesy of the site.
