That ABC interview with Geoff Johns & Jim Lee was actually mentioned on another thread but since I'm not there right now & this is kinda related, I'll mention it here. In reference to Superman without the trunks, Jim Lee basically said that 'the circus strongman look is outdated' or some such, I guess to justify the changes.
Look, maybe when the character was first invented maybe characters were modeled after that somewhat, the times & all that it was back then. But let's face it. Maybe you can take the trunks off of Batman & other characters & still make it work. But they're not Superman! When you try that with Superman, you get crap like the pic that started this thread. For an analogy, the Barry Allen Flash never had trunks even from the beginning but since they were never there, they weren't needed in that case. It would probably have looked retarded if someone had started drawing him with trunks! Now flip that back around to Superman who always had the trunks. It looks retarded without them!
I could go on & on but you get the point? No trunks=something missing! It just doesn't look right, 'circus strongman' or not!

Totally with batman its ok with no trunks it doesnt really affect him to much and same could be said with certain other characters. But with superman it does make the suit incomplete and lacking. And just a belt to break up all the blue in the suit doesnt cut it. As for cirus strongman thing wasnt the whole point to going with bold/bright colors and look all about making himself look like a symbol and let people known he is there for good and stuff like that. Blanking on the term i really want to say here.

For the vast majority of his existence, Superman has been portrayed as a brave and righteous hero; with a strong sense of morality and justice. His Midwestern values are engrained in him and this is why he made the choice to become a symbol of hope and to fight against evil and protect the weak.
His costume was designed to be, as you say web, bright and bold to represent the symbol of hope and justice. In addition, to distract from people actually looking at his face! You take away his “look” and this is just the first steps in taking him down a long path of darkness. A path that Superman has not traveled since the 40’s. A path that has not defined him as the archetypical hero those all who came since follow and emulate.
Sure, he began as a tough and aggressive hero, but he never reached Batman’s level and took an entirely different approach, which lead him to his “Big Blue Boy Scout” nickname. These morons are once again trying to reinvent him, just as John Byrne did 30 years ago. It did not really work then and it will not work now!
Superman cannot be relevant in modern day America. He cannot be dark, he cannot be angst and he cannot be something lesser, because if he becomes these things, he ceases to be Superman. Superman does not need body armor! Superman does not need to be less powerful! Superman does not need to be darker! Superman does not need to be depressed and moody!
Superman needs to be Superman, plain and simple!
