New Trailer For Cavill's Next Film, 'Immortals"
I wonder if the Apologists bitching about Snyder's use of slow-mo will do the same for this film?

Me. Not a movie I'd pay to see.

Kind of a long read.

- Spoiler:
- Hi Latino Review guys. Just wanted to let you folks know how much I love your site and how I also miss you're early reviews. Always good to hear scoops from the fans and not snobby critics. Decided to send you my own thoughts on a early screening of a great film I caught, Immortals.
I have to be honest, I did not want to see this movie when my boyfriend told me he has a pass for it. I mean, I'm really sick of movies like 300 and the advertising for this one doesn't hide the fact that is from the same “makers”. I also wasn't keen on seeing another film from that guy who brought us that miserable J. Lo movie The Cell. What made me change my mind were two things: Mickey Rourke who I loved in Sin City and Henry Cavill who I lusted after as an avid fan of the cable series The Tudors. If anyone out there is upset that Cavill's been chosen to be the new Superman, they won't after seeing this film.
This is a new take on Greek mythology, telling that familiar story of mortal men and the Gods who reign over them. Cavill is Theseus, a poor fisherman considered to be a bastard after his outcast mother was raped before he was born. He's the type of angry young man unafraid to back down from a fight and has been well trained in combat since he was a boy by a mysterious old man. What Theseus doesn't know is that all his life he's been indirectly influenced by the King of the Gods, Zeus himself. The law of the Gods is to not directly interfere in the lives of humans and if broken, the penalty is death. Zeus takes the law so seriously that late in the film we see him carry out the penalty on one of his own kind.
Zeus has been indirectly influencing Theseus because a war is coming. Peasant turned warlord Hyperion (Rourke) is waging a war against humanity that he hopes to bring directly to the doorstep of Mt Olympus. Hyperion has been searching for a magical bow that can not only kill Gods, but enable him to free their eternal enemies, the Titans who have been imprisoned for centuries within the confines of a secret mountain fortress on Earth.
When Hyperion and his forces lay waste to Theseus' village, the young man embarks on a quest of vengeance. Joining him is a thief played by Stephen Dorff (Yeah, that Stephen Dorff) as well as a monk who cut out his own tongue rather than reveal to Hyperion the location of a virgin oracle. The Oracle (Slumdog Millionaire's Frieda Pinto) can not only see into the future, but knows of the location of the magical bow Hyperion seeks.
Theseus eventually locates the bow and finds himself protecting the girl who in no time falls in love with him. (Can you blame her.) Unfortunately, he doesn't hold onto the weapon very long and the third act develops into an epic battle between Hyperion's forces and a small Greek army who have holed up at the entrance to the mountain prison of the Titans. Eventually even the Gods must break their rules and take action as all hell breaks loose and boy is it bloody.
Greek mythology was never my strong suit, but I still recognized that Immortals got many of the facts wrong and decided to take the names of famous characters and create its own story. If I'm not mistaken, Theseus was best remembered as having defeated the minotaur. In this film, there's a new twist on that as he ends up in a bloody brawl with one of Hyperion's warriors whose helmet resembles that of the mythical beast. I was actually okay with all the mythological discrepencies because the film manages to be entertaining.
Mickey Rourke may look out of place in this sort of period film, but he's exceptionally good as the heavy. You get the sense that Hyperion was just a guy who grew tired of praying and pleading to the Gods and decided to challenge them directly. If he's convinced thousands of guys to follow him and wear scars on his face like he does, then he's one tough SOB.
Cavill's gonna make a great Superman, there's not doubt about that. There's an honestly to his performance and after one scene where he rallies the troops, you'll want to follow him as well. He's also got a great body that made me drool several times throughout the picture. Friedo Pinto doesn't do much as his love interest, but you guys out there may be happy to know she shows her bare butt in a love scene. (I suspect it was a body double though.)
The 3D. OMG, the 3D! I don't like 3D movies, but in this case it worked really nicely. This is an incredible film filled with beautiful costumes and amazing sets that really popped out thanks to the 3D effect. They didn't over do it and I didn't get a headache, but I enjoyed the 3D more than the last couple of films I've seen. Listen, I'm a girl and I don't normally like these kinds of movies (my boyfriend can't understand why I don't care for Gladiator), but the bottom line is I had a great time watching this one. Clash of the Titans has nothing on this, but then I again, I guess that ain't saying much, huh? Call me The Sure Thing if you use this review.
Kind of a long read.
