'World War Z'? 'The Lone Ranger'????? Are you fucking SHITTING me??MAN OF STEEL Snubbed In Academy Awards' "Visual Effects" Shortlist
While Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World have made the cut, Man of Steel is noticeably absent in the list of ten films which are now in the running for a place in the "Visual Effects" category for the 86th Oscars. Hit the jump to find out which other movies are on the shortlist!
By Josh Wilding - 12/5/2013
Whatever faults I had with Man of Steel, I personally think that its exclusion here is shameful. While many other CGI heavy movies also failed to make the cut - Ender's Game and Fast & Furious 6 for example - Zack Snyder's Superman reboot was visually stunning, and easily as good (if not better) than many of those listed above. What do you guys think? Sound off below!BEVERLY HILLS, CA — The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that 10 films remain in the running in the Visual Effects category for the 86th Oscars®.
The films are listed below in alphabetical order:
“Elysium”
“Gravity”
“The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug”
“Iron Man 3”
“The Lone Ranger”
“Oblivion”
“Star Trek Into Darkness”
“Thor: The Dark World”
“Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures Pacific Rim”
“World War Z”
The Academy's Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee determined the shortlist. All members of the Visual Effects Branch will now be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the shortlisted films on Thursday, January 9, 2014. Following the screenings, the members will vote to nominate five films for final Oscar consideration.
Oscars nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 16, 2014, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2013 will be presented on Oscar Sunday, March 2, 2014, at the Dolby Theatre® at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live on the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.

The Academy Awards mostly exist to either state the obvious and kiss a lot of ass (Peter Jackson) or else to reassure Hollywood insiders that even though stupid Middle America didn't enjoy their leftwing bullshit (Lone Ranger) or pretentious mediocrity (WWZ), the Academy still love them.Apologist Puncher wrote:'World War Z'? Think of it as group therapy mixed with brown-nosing whoever the big shot right now is. That's all it's good for anymore.

This is as bad as the 'so-called' Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! Or 'Hall of Shame' as Eddie Trunk calls it. An elite club basically started by the founder of Rolling Stone magazine for who they think should get in. The point? They snub bands & artists that have been eligible for DECADES. Bands like KISS, Queen, Deep Purple, Journey, Iron Maiden, so on & so forth. Ozzy referred to them as being irrelevant or something, that is, until they allowed Black Sabbath in. And one of the biggest snubs ever was RUSH! But thankfully they're in there now. But look at KISS. Out of all the years they've been eligible, they've only been nominated twice. First in 2009 (didn't win) & now for 2014 (still might not win). So you get the point. But they admit Madonna & rap groups, etc.
The so-called Oscars reminds me of this. Films like Avengers killed at the box office yet they'll pick some obscure 'art film' that barely even registered at the box office as their winner. Why? Because it was 'emotional' & 'well-directed' & whatever other line of BS they hand you. Personally I think stuff voted by the people is a better yardstick of where things are really at. And yeah, MAN OF STEEL should get the noms!

I was behind the curve on this for a long time but I realized the Academy Awards were complete horse shit back when the 2005 films came along. Check out what the biggest movies that year were. Narnia, Batman Begins, Harry Potter, Star Wars and some other stuff. Big money.non_amos wrote:This is as bad as the 'so-called' Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! Or 'Hall of Shame' as Eddie Trunk calls it. Then look at what won all the awards, and ask yourself if that represents any slice of flyover country.

Out of curiosity what did win that year? I know I could look it up but too lazy. But you've got a point. If the general public doesn't even remember what won, what does that say?thecolorsblend wrote:I was behind the curve on this for a long time but I realized the Academy Awards were complete horse shit back when the 2005 films came along. Re: 'Man Of Steel' Snubbed By The Academy
Ang Lee– Brokeback Mountain (Best Director)
Crash– Paul Haggis, Cathy Schulman (Best Picture)
Philip Seymour Hoffman– Capote (Best Actor)
George Clooney– Syriana (Best Supporting Actor)
Exactly which of those intersect with day-to-day life in middle America? Is it any wonder that many of them preferred the movies I listed before to those listed above? Not to worry though, the Academy made sure to give 'em all a pat on the back. They understand... even if the redneck bitter clingers don't.
To be fair though, there are times when a nomination is meant to be a show of solidarity. Take Singerman's visual effects nomination the following year, for example. Bryan Singer spent a decent portion of Singerman's post production time in fucking rehab for his coke habit and couldn't review crucial shots for the film. Because of that, the effects houses had no choice but to twiddle their thumbs while Singer got his personal problems under control. By the time he was out of rehab, they didn't have dick for time to do good work so they had to just slap the shots together as best they could.
Because there's absolutely no way anybody could be impressed by Singerman's effects. All or most of the shots are Play Station 2-caliber work. They would've been just great back in 1999 but times change. And so the VFX nomination was fiction. There was never a chance for Singerman to win because it was never intended to. The nomination was the Academy basically saying "hey, we understand, the work was total horseshit and not one bit of that was your fault, it's cool, you'll still get more work in the future, don't worry".
But even that kind of undermines my own point because I just admitted that the nomination was worthless, and existed only to send a message of acceptance and understanding to the VFX technicians. So even when it's done for all the right and most noble reasons, an Academy Award is still a crock of shit.

Re: 'Man Of Steel' Snubbed By The Academy
I can cite one reason why this didn't get a nom: Zack Snyder. Other than a few critics like the late Roger Ebert (one of the few to give WATCHMEN deserved high praise), a lot of them seem to hate him and his movies, throwing him under the bus among directors critics love to hate. Meanwhile, someone like J.J. Abrams get praised as the next Spielberg when his work is not distinctive or all that different from other filmmmakers like Michael Bay, or worse, just ripping off other movies, while Snyder does something truly unique for Superman compared to any other live action adaptation. Even worse, the real critics darlings are guys like Tom Hooper. I cannot understand how this guy gives critics such a hard on, as most of the work I've seen of his was just really poor directing in terms of working with actors, and worse, the utterly nonsensical camera work that doesn't say anything, his "style" is bullshit. I saw a bit of LES MISERABLES and just from a few seconds of watching it I hated it. I guarantee you, no matter what happens, his next film will be nominated a bunch of Oscars and praised, just because his name is attached and he seems to have a good publicist.
A lot of cinema that gets praised to heavens by critics are just forgettable fluff now. A few good ones pop in once in awhile, some getting deserved wins, but too much of them are just the same pretentious dull shite. GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK was my favorite of 2005, but of course CRASH wins because it panders to the kind of "this is a very important message" dribble but in the most insufferable and unintentionally hilarious fashion. Even critically panned movies like EXTREMELY LOUD AND INCREDIBLY SHITTY got best picture nominations (I utterly loath that moment when they have the kid drop to the floor as the two towers collapse, that's just utterly tacky, not "artsy"). Why? It's just the Oscars being so full of themselves in their little circle. I wouldn't want them to turn into the Grammy's which today just awards artists for merely topping charts despite being total shit, but it's just as bad that they nominate and award a bunch of films that aren't worth it.
