In an upcoming animated feature

DC really has a great handle on their animated films and another one has just been announced, sort of.

According to TV Guide, Molly Quinn (Castle) has confirmed that she will be voicing the role of Supergirl in an upcoming DC animated faeture.

"I'm so excited to be a part of the DC family, not to mention helping Superman fight crime. Yes, I am a Supergirl!"

The untitled film will be produced by Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment and adapts Action Comics #866-870 by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank which featured Braniac and the bottle city of Kandor. With their next animated feature being The Dark Knight Returns, don't expect this one to hit home video for a while.

It's hard to be objective about this story. On its own merits, it's actually a nice little tale. But as far as continuity, it was pretty much the beginning of the end of me collecting Superman comics ("we've never actually seen the REAL Brainiac" shit was an insult to my intelligence).

It makes a lot of business sense. It is (or with minimal effort can be made into) a DTV-friendly self-contained story, it's got the principal/iconic characters (Clark/Superman, Lois, Jimmy, Perry, Brainiac, Supergirl), some interesting but lesser known supporting characters (Cat, Lombard, Ron), a physical opponent for Superman to fight mano a mano, etc. Plus, DCE can plug the Brainiac hardcover in the DVD extras so there's synergy there.

It's not a bad choice at all. It's just a kind bittersweet story for me.

Either way, here's hoping they abandon Gary Frankenstein's Vertigo-lite line style.

Warner Home Video has a whole year full of DC animated titles coming our way. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2 is currently available for download (available on DVD/Blu-ray later this month) and they've got two more coming at us. Later in the year, we will see an adaptation of the Flashpoint mini-series, but coming up before that is Superman: Unbound, an adaption of Geoff Johns 'Braniac' storyline from 2008.

TV Guide posted the first two images from the film. They also revealed that the 'Braniac' story is only the first part of the film, the second part will deal with Superman's trouble with the women in his life.

"As his romance with Lois heats up (in his secret identity as Clark Kent), he worries that she could be in jeopardy if his enemies discover their connection. And his paternal instincts drive him to be overprotective of the teenage Kara — despite the fact that she has super abilities on par with his."

The voice actor for Superman there is Matt Bomer. Not bad. The dialogue in this scene is a bit Spider-Man'ish for my tastes but Bomer does fine for himself.

Interesting tidbit about Bomer there. As you know he was supposed to be Superman in Brett Ratner's Superman: Flyby. Apparently he was not turned down for being gay but rather due to changing directors & that project falling apart. But it makes you question, why didn't Bryan Singer use him? That's what I'd like to know. Here's a link if anyone wants to check it out but I won't post the entire thing since it's really not related to this post:

I watched that clip but have some questions. I'm aware there's been all kinds of versions of Brainiac but as far as 'pre-Crisis' I only knew two of them. The first was the Colu version that was green & was basically the same size as Luthor. Later this same version was transformed into the 'skull' version which predated CRISIS by nearly 2 years. I actually liked this latter version though. But I'm sure over the years since I quit reading that DC has changed him umpteen times. So here's my question. Why is this version like a giant to Superman? And why is he seemingly stronger than Superman? I don't really remember that trait when I was growing up.

I was actually a halfway cheerleader for Bomer to play Superman in the George Miller JLA flick that never happened... until I found out he is apparently only 5'10" or something. Lois & Clark could get away with a relatively shorter Superman but I feel like any big screen version needs the first string. So yeah, exit Bomer.

As for why Singer skipped him over... maybe it's the height thing. Then again, I have it on good authority that Singer was coked out for a goodly bit of Singerman so who can say what he might've been thinking?

During that Brainiac storyline from, I dunno, 2008 or 2009 or something, Geoff Johns and Gary Frank set up that everything Superman had encountered before was not really Brainiac. Those were all drones of some kind. He'd never actually met the REAL Brainiac before.

My guess is that they wanted to do this for the same reason they did the same thing with Toyman. Namely, they wanted to validate all previous versions of the character (Pre-Crisis Colu, Pre-Crisis cyborg, Post-Crisis Milton Fine, Post-Crisis black suit/purple cape/yellow van dyke, etc) while putting their version front and center in the mythos henceforth. I found it unbelievably arrogant, unnecessary and, forgive me, contrived.

Rather like Lois Lane's voice.

Damn, I never followed up on this? Shame! But then it was a weird night when I watched it. Anyway, saw it on Wednesday, 05.08.2013 and really dug it. Take away the Gary Frank art and most of the continuity associated with the original story and the whole thing is actually pretty enjoyable! I do recommend checking it out if you have the means.

Plus, Diedrich Bader as Steve Lombard was inspired casting, if you ask me.

Have to disagree with colors.

Watched it, fell asleep during it. They cut out all the "heart" of the original story, and just tried filling it up with action and action and action. Why did they make it seem like Superman NEVER faced Brainiac before?

By far the second most disappointing of all the DCU Animated films I've seen. 'Braniac Attacks' sucked donkey balls.
