EXCLUSIVE: Sources are telling me that Sony Pictures’ The Amazing Spiderman swept the Asian box office this weekend as the much-anticipated actioner opened early in a handful of international territories. The reboot of Marvel’s most popular character will be released July 3rd in the U.S./Canada where rival studios report the tracking has been flat. ”It’s off to a fantastic start overseas,” an insider gushes to me. In Korea the 3D film debuted to $13M, bigger than Marvel’s The Avengers which scored one of the biggest openings ever there. The sources say that India took in $5+M, more than Avengers, for the biggest opening ever there for an American film. Singapore, Hong Kong, Phillippines all reported “huge” openings, too. It’s a very auspicious start for director Marc Webb and stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone in the Spider-Man origins film similar to the original told just 10 years ago. Disney may own Marvel now, but Sony Pictures doesn’t have to share its worldwide box office grosses from The Amazing Spider-Man. Instead, Disney/Marvel receives all the merchandising loot.

Despite some sceptics doubting that The Amazing Spider-Man would make a significant impact at the box office, it has now been revealed (via @giteshpandya) that the reboot is off to an impressive start, taking over $50 million in only 13 international territories. The film will begin rolling out in larger markets such as North America and the United Kingdom from this Tuesday. It made the most in Korea ($13.4 million), although Japan followed closely behind with $11.4 million. Surprisingly, it was in India that the film made the biggest impact, not with the largest amount (£6 million) but still the highest ever for an American film and 73% bigger than both Spider-Man 3 and Marvel's The Avengers. Moviegoers have clearly missed seeing the wallcrawler on the big screen!

Sony's superhero tentpole opens on the eve of the lucrative July 4th play period; on Thursday, "Katy Perry: Part of Me" enters the mix, followed by Oliver Stone's "Savages" on Friday.

Marking the summer's second superhero tentpole, The Amazing Spider-Man begins spinning its web at the North American box office at midnight Monday, hoping to relaunch the crucial franchise.

Spider-Man features a new look and feel, along with a new director -- Marc Webb -- and cast. Andrew Garfield replaces Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man, while Emma Stone plays the love interest.

Bullish box-office observers believe that Spider-Man could gross north of $120 million during the course of its six-day debut, while Sony puts the number in the $110 million to $120 million range, saying that's a strong start for a reboot.

The 3D movie is already doing bang-up business overseas, where it opened to a stellar $50.1 million from only 13 markets over the weekend. Spider-Man towered in Asia, led by Korea ($13.4 million) and Japan ($11.4 million), doing bigger business in some territories than box-office goliath The Avengers.

Prerelease tracking in North America shows that males of all ages are keen to see the film, while younger females also are expressing strong interest, thanks to the youthful cast and love story at the heart of the movie. Also, Sony's marketing campaign emphasized the untold story and secret that drives Peter Parker.

Spider-Man has more than two weeks of solid play time before Warner Bros. unfurls Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises.

Sony Pictures is reporting that Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man brought in $7.5 million in 3,150 midnight screenings last night with $1.2 million, roughly 16% of that amount, coming from the 300 IMAX screens which had midnight showings.

This is similar to what Spider-Man 3 took in at midnight on May 4, 2007, and that ended up making $59.8 million its opening Friday on its way to a record-setting opening weekend of $151 million. Today being Tuesday may lower that amount considerably even with most schools being out and people leaving work early for the 4th of July holiday tomorrow. We couldn't find reports on what Spider-Man 2, the last installment to open over the Independence Day week, did in midnights but it made $40.4 million its opening day.

By comparison, Michael Bay's original Transformers did $8.8 million in midnights (including 10pm previews) when it opened on the same day five years ago. Its sequel Transformers: Rise of the Fallen made $16.6 in midnight screenings alone while last year's Transformers: Dark of the Moon did $13.5 million (again including previous night previews).

ComingSoon.net's box office guru The Weekend Warrior predicted an opening day of $27 to 30 million for The Amazing Spider-Man earlier today, but with $7.5 million already in the bank, it should definitely be on the higher side of that amount if not closer to the opening day of Spider-Man 2.

TUESDAY 11 PM, 3RD UPDATE: More fireworks at the North American box office on the eve of U.S. Independence Day. My sources say Sony Pictures’ superhero reboot The Amazing Spider-Man opened with $35M (though some rival studios put the number in the neighborhood of $32M tonight). It easily sets a new domestic record for a Tuesday opening – helped by its 3D premium pricing – and is ahead of the original 2D Transformers ($27.8M) that debuted on Tuesday July 3rd, 2007. ”That is one huge number,” a Sony exec gushed to me tonight. “Unbelievable start to what should be a very exciting 6 days.”

TUESDAY 10 PM, 2ND UPDATE: No grosses yet. But I’m told Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man received an ‘A-’ Cinemascore from audiences (an ‘A’ from under age 18 moviegoers) which should spur good word of mouth.

TUESDAY 6 PM UPDATE: Usually if a movie is opening well in 4,318 North American theaters, the Hollywood studio wants to shout the results. For some reason Sony Pictures today is “trying to keep a lid” on the North American grosses for its 3DThe Amazing Spider-Man, in the words of one exec to me. “At the end of the matinees we still have an incredible story to tell, especially knowing its a Tuesday night and not a Friday night. But the numbers don’t lie.” Frankly, I don’t get all the secrecy. Especially because, after claiming $7.5M in midnight shows and another $9.3M in matinees and pre-sales so far, the studio already has put $16.8M in the bank. “Is it crazy to hope to get $9M or $10M more out of a Tuesday night?” a Sony exec asks me. No, but what’s crazy is to keep it to yourselves. But the studio’s extreme nervousness reflects concerns over how this rebooted franchise will go over just 10 years after the original, even more so because of what Sony’s rivals have characterized as flat tracking even though this is Marvel’s most popular character.

But none were 3D pics with its premium ticket prices. Its early international box office also has been stellar and so is this U.S./Canada debut. Last weekend The Amazing Spider-Man opened foreign with $50.2M, which was bigger than Marvel’s The Avengers in some of its 13 international markets. It swept the Asian box office this weekend as the much-anticipated actioner opened early in a handful of overseas territories.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that The Amazing Spider-Man made $23.4 million at the box office yesterday, taking its current total in North America to $59.3 million. While its Tuesday opening of $35 million broke records, it failed to live up to the Wednesday record total made by the original Transformers back in 2007 ($29.1 million). The site also points out the fact that Spider-Man 2 made $22 million on July 4th, 2004. With an A- CinemaScore (and an A from moviegoers under the age of 18) and mostly positive reviews, it looks like Marc Webb's reboot will be a hit for Sony Pictures.

Spider-Man' hits $75 million,'Katy Perry' opens to $3 million

"The Amazing Spider-Man" has racked up $75 million in domestic ticket sales in its first three days, while "Katy Perry: Part of Me" took in just $3.1 million on its first day.

The opening for Paramount Pictures' low-budget 3-D documentary about the pop star was a modest start, not only lagging behind the web slinger, but also "Ted," "Magic Mike" and "Brave."

Opening day audiences loved the picture, however, giving it an average grade of A, according to market research firm CinemaScore. "Part of Me" appears likely to match expectations among people who had seen pre-release surveys that the film would gross about $13 million through Sunday.

Sony Pictures' "Spider-Man" reboot, meanwhile, posted the second highest Thursday ever for a movie in its third day of release, behind 2007's "Transformers." It remains on track to gross a little less than $150 million through Sunday.

The more important total for "The Amazing Spider-Man" may come from overseas. Sony is premiering the film in 57 new foreign countries this weekend including the United Kingdom, Spain, Australia, Mexico and Russia and could easily take in more than $100 million by Sunday. That's on top of the movie's early start of $50 million last weekend from 13 international markets, most in Asia.

Sony executives expect "The Amazing Spider-Man" to ultimately gross significantly more internationally than in the U.S. and Canada.

Here are the top five movies at the box office on Thursday, according to studio estimates and Hollywood.com:

1. "The Amazing Spider-Man" (Sony): $15.8 million on its third day. Domestic total: $75 million.

2. "Ted" (Universal/Relativity/MRC): $8 million on its sixth day. Domestic total: $87.7 million.

3. "Magic Mike" (Warner Bros.): $4.7 million on its sixth day. Domestic total: $67.2 million.

4. "Brave" (Disney/Pixar): Estimated $5 million on its 13th day. Domestic total: $154.4 million.

5. "Katy Perry: Part of Me" (Paramount Insurge): $3.1 million on its first day.

Now for the better news: Sony/Columbia’s The Amazing Spider-Man is looking like $21M Friday for a weekend around $65M. That should give the 3D reboot a 6-day total of $140M through Sunday. Nice haul, but only middling when it comes to top moneymakers for that time period. Especially considering Spidey is Marvel’s most popular character. “In the world of reboots it’s pretty spectacular,” a Sony exec reminds. (Batman Begins came back with a $48.7M opening weekend, while X-Men First Class debuted to $55.1M.) Little wonder that Sony is fast-tracking the next installment of its new trilogy with fresh villains and storylines that should spark more interest in this too-soon reboot that was just a retread of the original origins saga.

During its 6-day debut in North America, film managed to make $141 million ($65 million Friday-Sunday), plus the $200 million internationally brings the global total to $341.2 million. It's still hard to predict how much will the film make at the end, but with an "A-" Cinemascore it should have solid word-of-mouth and studio must be pleased with the results of this reboot. With sequel already scheduled to be released in 2014, it's safe to say that Spidey is back!

"The Amazing Spider-Man" will pass the $400 million mark in worldwide box office Wednesday, Sony announced.

The franchise reboot took in $8.6 million Tuesday in North America for a domestic gross to date of $153.2 million. Through Tuesday, the film had made $231.8 million overseas for a worldwide total of $385 million.

"Spider-Man" made $65 million over the July 4 weekend, on its way to $140 million for the 6-day holiday frame in North America. it opened on the last weekend in June overseas and took in $50 million in its first three days of release abroad.

In all, the "Spider-Man" franchise has brought in $2.8 billion since the first film debuted in 2002. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone star in the latest film, directed by Marc Webb.

The Amazing Spider-Man has shot straight to the top of the UK box office on its debut weekend on release.

The Andrew Garfield-led superhero reboot pulls in more than £11 million to easily coast past its competition and secure the number one spot.

Amazing Spider-Man's opening total, which includes previews from Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, is more than the rest of the top ten combined and the second-highest UK debut of the year behind Avengers's £15.78 million haul.

Ice Age 4: Continental Drift falls down a place to number two, while The Five-Year Engagement holds its spot at number three.

Katy Perry's 3D concert movie Part of Me lands at number four with £449,491 from its 326 locations. The documentary's total falls short of last year's Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, which took £821,000 on its opening weekend, but outpaces Glee: The 3D Concert Movie's £356,271 from last August.

Elsewhere, the only other new release to make it into the top ten is Bollywood film Bol Bachchan at number eight.

Deadline reports that Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man will finish this weekend with around $35 million; a decent -44% hold. Ice Age 4 (which grossed $45.5 million) is the reason why the Sony Pictures reboot only managed to hold on to the top spot for a week, although the release of The Dark Knight Rises next Friday is expected to completely suck the air out of the box office as Marvel's The Avengers did back in May. Back to this weekend though, and Spidey's latest big screen outing is expected to hit $200 million by close of business and actually passed the $400 million mark at the worldwide box office earlier this week. The studio are said to be confident that the film will end up grossing a worldwide cume of $800 million, although it still has quite a way to go before hitting that figure. Regardless, the film (which comes just 10 years after Spider-Man and five after Spider-Man 3 has been a success for the studio and a sequel is all but guaranteed at this point. Sony Pictures' The Amazing Spider-Man earned another $35 million its second weekend, a drop of just 44% in ticket sales. The Marc Webb-directed action adventure, starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, Martin Sheen and Sally Field, has reached $200.9 million domestically. Overseas, Spidey added $66.6 million this weekend for an international total of $320.5 million. That puts the worldwide total for the $230 million-budgeted film at $521.4 million.

A lot can be said about The Amazing Spider-Man. Whether you like it or hate it, it is now the highest-grossing reboot ever (followed by Casino Royale, Batman Begins and Star Trek). The film now stands at $704.8 million globally, and with a release in China this week (where it made $5.46 million opening day), it should pass $760 million when it's all said and done.

The Amazing Spider-Man definitely surprised with its theatrical run. While it won't match any of the previous films, many thought that the film wouldn't get as high as this at the worldwide box office. $700M+ is a great number for any film, especially for a reboot. As of right now, it made $258.3 million domestically, and $446.5 internationally. The sequel is set for May 2, 2014 release.

As you will have more than likely heard by now, Marvel's The Avengers passed $1.5 billion at the worldwide box office today, while The Dark Knight Rises has finally hit $1 billion. However, it was the latter that battled it out in China this week with The Amazing Spider-Man, but the 3D reboot ended up coming out on top with $33.3 million to The Dark Knight Rises' $28.5 million. However, this extra boost (as well as the fact that it opened in a few other international locations including Italy) has meant that Christopher Nolan's third and final Batman movie is back at #1 at the international box office with an impressive $574 million. The Amazing Spider-Man is #2 with $475.3 million, followed by The Expendables 2, Total Recall, Brave and The Bourne Legacy. Back in North America, the following films have been confirmed as being the Top Five of the Summer.
