'Red Dawn' Remake Empty Re: 'Red Dawn' Remake

You know, it feels like there was a time even when remakes were all prevalent and whatnot where there was a chance when the remake might actually be good. Ocean's 11, for example. But in the past few years you can virtually set your watch to it that the remake is going to suck. I can't imagine a reason to remake The Day The Earth Stood Still but I sure as fuck can't understand how the remake turned out as horribly as it did given the potential of the original concept.

More broadly, you have to wonder if we're at the end of our rope culturally speaking when all we can do is recycle what has come before rather than create new stuff. It's one thing to recycle plots or character archetypes or whatever. But wholesale remaking stuff on the level Hollywood is calls America's future cultural influence into question.

EDIT- Yes, I realize it's unfair to hang all of this on the Red Dawn remake but I just type this stuff up as it comes to me.

'Red Dawn' DESERVES to be the punching-bag for Hollywood's stupid obsessions with remakes. It took every ounce of emotional weight the original carried, and flushed it down the shitter.

The brothers talking to their dad outside the Re-Education Camp, and the "Avenge ME!!" line? Gone. Fighting for their homes above all else? Gone. Un-trained teenagers taking on an army ALONE, and not only holding their own but gaining ground? Gone. Life-long friend turned unwilling traitor, and his subsequent death? Gone. Deaths of main characters holding some real weight when they happened? Gone. One brother taking the other to a favorite childhood playground so they can die together as a family? GONE.

HollyWeird is too stupid to realize that the BIGGEST films they have put out in the last 20 years have all been "original" and NOT remakes. The people are clamoring for something NEW, not bastardizations of films from their youth. Until then, they will put the blame for falling ticket sales on imaginary "Boogey Men" like internet piracy.

Not themselves.

Ain't Chris Hemsworth in this film? How did he do? He's awesome as THOR but this sounds like a waste of his talents.

I wonder how long any major name actor would last if he had a formal "no remake" policy. A sequel is one thing but a remake? Suppose he said "if this movie is a remake, call someone else". Would he eventually get to the point where he's unemployed?

He did fine, for the most part. Some cringe-worthy things they made him do and say though.

And he was NO Jed. Swayze owns that role still.

No. In fact, if more actors did this, remakes would go the way of the DoDo.

Have you seen Tom Cruise in any remakes?

'Red Dawn' Remake Close-but-no-cigar

'Mission Impossible' was an adaption of a 1960's television show.

Maybe somebody should introduce this in the next SAG meeting. "Members who accept leading roles in remakes of films will have to pay a higher union fee for the next three years on a per film basis." This could gain some traction. You gotta figure your average actor is probably as sick of remakes as we are because most of them probably didn't go into the business to get 10 to 50 year old leftovers.

I don't know if you noticed, but actors aren't very bright individuals...
