Re: Anne Hathaway Cast As Selina Kyle, Tom Hardy Cast As Bane In TDKR
You know, I was thinking about something recently:
In Nolan's Batman "world", Bruce Wayne comes up with his suit in order to protect himself when he does what he does, right? And what did he come up with? Something that makes him look like a "bat". So why is it NOW somehow "unrealistic" to think that Selina Kyle, a cat burglar who just might need extra protection herself, would come up with something "cat-like"?
Something like this:
How is what he DID come up with more "realistic"? I just don't get Nolan's "rationale" here.
Then again, look who he thought would make a convincing "Bane".....

Yep! I tell you what though, this summer is gonna be very interesting. I'm expecting Avengers to take it hands down but since this is a *cough*, 'cerebral' film from duh Nolan you just don't know. Hopefully common sense will prevail.

I read every day how Nolanites think this film will make "uh billion kujillion doolars" because 'The Dark Knight' made a billion worldwide. Problem is, this ISN'T 'The Dark Knight', Tom Hardly hasn't dropped dead yet, and this summer 'Rises' has A LOT of competition.
But hey, since when have "facts" ever been a factor when it comes to apologists?

Ya when we learned catwoman was going to be in the film. I was so hoping they were going to go the more modern catwoman comics look. Since that is a very doable/real looking costume. So it does suck she doesnt have much cat motif going on. But didnt they also mention they took look on early catwoman/60s batman show catwoman for look?

Not sure what to make of it but it looks like Batman is using either a laptop or an iPad! And even if it's one of those two what sort of use could he possibly have if it's one of them?

The only real praise I can think to offer is that at least the Catwoman suit kinda sorta maybe pays a type of homage to the Julie Newmar outfit somewhat if you tilt your head and squint your eyes.

Remember who you're talking to here, dude. I don't view a Newmar reference as a negative.

It reeks of Singer and his Superman The Movie obsession. Pop culture and the WORLD have moved on from that particular Catwoman.
It's about time the live-action franchises did the same.

Didn't anne/nolan mention they where homage 60s catwomen for there take. I thought I recall that. But still would have loved a full cowl on her too. Even if it was for a few scenes. Bane is still mini bane crap. As for the laptop/ipad thing he is probbably just using it as a tracer thing or to set up the bat(wing) for something maybe.

What's duh scene with mini-Bane supposed to be? Some people looked knocked out but there's that guy 'on his knees'. What's up with this?

A not-so-clever attempt at convincing the viewer that Hardly Bane is the tallest thing in the frame? That's my best guess.non_amos wrote:What's duh scene with mini-Bane supposed to be? Some people looked knocked out but there's that guy 'on his knees'. What's up with this?

Re: Anne Hathaway Cast As Selina Kyle, Tom Hardy Cast As Bane In TDKR
Since I feel like ranting, here goes.
TDKRises takes place, what, five years later? As I understand it, the basic premise is that Bruce retired Batman not long after credits rolled for TDK and presumably he's just been sitting on his ass all these years counting his billions.
Look, my personal biography for Batman goes that one day he'd wake up and experience what alcoholics refer to as a moment of clarity. He'd realize (A) he's done more for the city than anybody else would or could and (B) his parents wouldn't want him to live this way. They'd want him to find happiness as best he could... and he'd eventually come to a head space where he'd give it a shot. He'd put Batman behind him. But until he reaches that point, stay the fuck out of his way because he isn't slowing down.
BUT the popular conception of Batman (ie, Grant Morrison mixed with a dash or three of Denny O'Neil) is that he'll retire ten years after he dies in battle. He's just unstoppable.
Either way you care to look at it, Batman isn't going to be whipped into giving up. He might decide to retire or he might be stand by his mission until the day he dies but it'll be a cold day in hell before the Joker can break his spirit. It just isn't happening. If Batman was capable of being psychologically broken that way, it would've happened when he saw Thomas and Martha Wayne get perforated. It didn't happen then so what the hell makes the Joker so special??
To me, this is in some ways a more egregious offense than Singer pulling Singerman away from Earth for however many years because, idiotic as the notion is, you can at least argue that comes from an external force. Batman? His exile looks it comes from an internal conflict. For that reason, I really don't care what else Nolan ends up doing right (and it looks like a pretty fucking short list to begin with), Batman doesn't do the whole "defeat" thing. As with Singerman, if the film is flawed at the conceptual level, does it really matter what else is done well?

Re: Anne Hathaway Cast As Selina Kyle, Tom Hardy Cast As Bane In TDKR
Actually it's supposed to be 8 years after TDK that this film takes place. Which does give you reason to pause, just exactly what was he doing all that time?! I don't think the real Batman was gone that long in the comics when his back was broken by the real Bane. You have to wonder where Nolan is going with this.
But I can't help but add this. I still can't wait until all the box office receipts are tallied for the entire summer, if you get my drift?

Re: Anne Hathaway Cast As Selina Kyle, Tom Hardy Cast As Bane In TDKR
Y'know, much as I wasn't hip to TDK in general, one thing I kind of liked about it was you this still fairly inexperienced Batman put on a nice little character arc. He sets out to make himself into a symbol in BB. There's a lot of heavy handed imagery and didactic dialogue in there but it sets the main thing up well enough. Then in TDK, he wants to take that symbol to the next level and bring about real and lasting change in the city. He wants to eventually consign Batman to history's trash can... but the end of the movie, I think, was supposed to tell him that's not in the cards. This is his thing. No matter what he originally wanted, he's the one who has to cowboy up and take care of the city. Nobody else can. Not now anyway.non_amos wrote:Actually it's supposed to be 8 years after TDK that this film takes place. Which does give you reason to pause, just exactly what was he doing all that time?! That's some really dark shit but the core of it isn't too far off from what a lot of Batman stories are all about.
To go in the direction for TDKRises that Nolan seems to be taking makes me wonder if he's even bothered to watch his own fucking movie. If we were supposed to take nothing else away from TDK, it's that Batman and Gotham deserve each other and they're both in it for the long haul. Gotham City needs a boogeyman and right now it has to be Batman.
Whatever, dude...
Message received loud and clear, old friend. Believe me, I think a lot of people are going to be surprised by the numbers this summer.non_amos wrote:But I can't help but add this. I still can't wait until all the box office receipts are tallied for the entire summer, if you get my drift?
