Tom Hardy To Play" Bane" In Batman Sequel

Post  Apologist Puncher on Wed Oct 13, 2010 10:57 pm

Deadline's Mike Fleming is reporting that noted badass Tom Hardy has landed a "lead role" in Christopher Nolan's untitled third Batman movie. Lots of folks are already assuming he's been cast as Edward Nigma aka The Riddler, but at no time has Nolan or anyone connected to the series - aside from Michael Caine, who seems to delight in driving the fanboys wild with speculation - indicated that this character will appear in the movie. He could be Dr. Kirk Langstrom for all we know (and fervently hope).

Until we know who Hardy's playing, you're still free to speculate that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in the running to play The Riddler.

No idea who he is playing. How about you?

Remember the hubub over Anthony Michael Hall in TDK? Everyone was trying to connect him to E Nigma. Hopelessly rearranging Mike Engel.

I think it goes beyond that though.

After his turn in Inception, I don't see him playing such a small role in the sequel.

I wish they would do something unexpected.

Guy Pearce as Black Mask would be great. They could go with No Man's Land version: Deranged cult leader.

To the contrary though, I think they should introduce Selina Kyle, ala TLH. A woman who's inserted herself into the socialite world by amassing the stolen fortunes of those she entertains. I wouldn't be surprised if they hint at a Ra's Algul return (along with Talia).

Not sure about Black Mask myself. I have a feeling it WILL be The Riddler in the end.

And Catwoman would be fine too, as long as it's someone GOOD.

It looks like we're in for a real treat with Tom Hardy as BANE:

http://www.superherohype.com/news/articles/166215-tom-hardy-on-the-dark-knight-rises-set

Here's a quote from a fan:

"They better make him bigger SERIOUSLY.... and he looks like he can be a special forces agent hmmm interesting..."

Here's the blog they linked to:

http://charlidos.tumblr.com/post/4803807613/this-was-just-posted-me-and-tom-hardy-bane-on

This was just posted:

Me and Tom Hardy (Bane) on set on the new Batman film!

Oh my god! He DOES have a shaved head! And he looks HUGE again.

Dude, seriously, what have you been smoking?! You tower over Hardy but I'm sure he's a better actor but still..... And look at those '24-inch pythons' on Hardy there! He's really pumped up there huh?! Someone, please, upload this photo!

Maybe Bane was a travesty in BATMAN AND ROBIN but at least they tried to get the size right. What does Nolan intend to do to compensate here?! I read, I believe at comments over at duh Homopage, don't remember which one but the point was, is that Nolan is supposedly gonna use some 'cutting-edge' tech to make Hardy really look like Bane. I guess CGI like the Hulk or something, motion-capture, whatever. I can't confirm this 'rumor'. Bur Nolan better do something before we find ourselves LAUGHING while we're in the theater! Maybe his Bane is used to menacing midgets or pygmies on some small island, and is ready to try his "big boy pants" on and go up against a full-sized male?

Jeebus Nolan. Really?

I like how the Superman film is shaping up, even the casting, but I fail to understand Nolan's reasoning in the Batman film. Anne Hathaway is possibly the one choice that makes the most sense but like I said, Lois instead of Catwoman but whatever. And I'm not saying his cast are bad actors, not at all. He's obviously enlisting some good talent. Maybe my problem is more with the story itself & Nolan's choice of villains, etc. I mean, like AP said, Hardy can act but c'mon! Bane?! What exactly is Nolan thinking?! Unless he's gonna go with what that 'rumor' said about using technology to make Hardy look like Bane, then what is Nolan's reasoning? It would've made more sense to use someone like 'The Rock' Duane Johnson just to have an actor who has some size to them. And even though 'The Rock' has proven that he can act, I don't know that we necessarily want him in a Batman film. Some other superhero film, maybe, but not Batman, & not Captain Marvel either.

I mean, I know Nolan is for 'ultra-realism' but give me a break! Would a 'super-steroid freak' be so unrealistic? But simply getting another bodybuilder or wrestler may not be the way to go either because some of them can't act. However, let's consider the story. Last we saw, Batman was on the run, being hunted. So how do they resolve that? Is Bane gonna be like a bounty hunter or something? And unless they're gonna adapt the 'Knightfall' story, what's the point? Personally I don't think Bane should be used in this film when there's much better villains! But of course, some can't be used due to 'Nolan'.

I could sooner see her as Lois than Catwoman but I wouldn't say she's ideally suited for either role.

And unless they're gonna adapt the 'Knightfall' story, what's the point? Personally I don't think Bane should be used in this film when there's much better villains! But of course, some can't be used due to 'Nolan'.
Stories like Doomsday (they can call the trade whatever the fuck they want but the comics storyline is titled "Doomsday" so that's what I go by) and Knightfall, intentionally or not, are designed to play to the strengths of comics as a storytelling format. They work because they rely on existing continuity (Warworld, Mongul, Hank Henshaw and so forth for Doomsday; Sword of Azrael, Vengeance of Bane, The Last Arkham and other stuff for Knightfall) while at the same time taking advantage of the "slow burn" nature of monthly periodical storytelling. You have a far greater amount of time to invest yourself in the characters and storylines as they get cooked up and brought to consummation.

Film simply doesn't work that way. Ya know?

All this to say that if Nolan intends to adapt Knightfall... WHY? To do it in a film at all is to necessarily cheat the narrative and not do the thing justice. I think the most any filmmaker can do in those sorts of things is to riff on the stories (Bane lifting Batman over his head preparing to break his back on his knee... but Batman escapes at the last second; Superman getting bloody as hell fighting Doomsday... but surviving the battle) but not literally (or even partially) adapt them.

It's actually for these reasons that I'm more and more starting to think that the weekly TV format is poised to do a MUCH better (although still imperfect) job of adapting these types of drawn out, lengthy storylines than any film could ever do.

As to villains that can't be used, a lot of people favor Black Mask. Because, y'know, we haven't seen enough of Batman fighting mobsters yet or anything. Mr. Freeze, Clayface, Poison Ivy, the actual Joker, etc, they're all out of the question... which calls in to question Nolan's "vision" for the saga. When at least 3/4's of the comics are eliminated simply because of how the filmmaker is approaching the material, maybe it's time to either modify his vision or find a new director.

Looks like Hardy wants to "convince" people that he is big enough for Bane.

He's not. At least not without a shit-ton of CGI.

I saw that last night but had to go to work & didn't comment then. However, Hardy is really pumped there, is he not? NOT! I don't know what Nolan's angle is here for certain but I do know one thing. Maybe he could give RAY MYSTERIO a run for his money? Wait a minute! What am I saying?! Even 'Jr.' would probably mop the floor with him! But if Hardy is gonna do 'motion-capture', then why would he have to bulk up at all? Mark Ruffalo is doing motion-capture for the Hulk in THE AVENGERS & I'm sure he didn't undergo any rigid training program. Which brings me back to my other point.

What exactly is Nolan thinking here?! Suspect

One thing that holds true about Nolan, is that nothing is ever as it seems. I'm thinking, if he is doing a straight interpretation of Bane, there is going to have to be some heavy cgi as Hardy is nowhere near big enough.

Exactly.

And you can't say "Because hardy is a GOOD actor!" either. We haven't seen him play this type of role before.

That would be the thing to do if Nolan is doing a direct interpretation of the character. Unless he's using a lot of cgi, he's not doing a direct interpretation. With Nolan, there is always something more to it. Also, I'm always for the better actor than the taking someone just because they look like a character. Looks are a good foundation, but you can always change someones look, but can't always make them a better actor. While we haven't seen Hardy play this type of character, we do know that he is a good actor in the characters he has portrayed.

Then why not pick someone like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson? The guy has shown that he is capable of playing characters beyond "action hero's". 'Get Shorty' had a lot of people talking about him. And unless Nolan is going to go waaaaay off-track, a character like Bane is better suited for HIM rather than Hardy.

And physically, he is a better fit.

I'd be down with that. I would think the major thing working against that is Nolan's propensity to work with the same actors over and over again. I don't think there would be too much acting heavy lifting for the Rock to handle Bane, but Nolan very rarely likes to step out of his box. He prefers top level acting talent and especially those he's worked with before.
