Want to See Spider-Man and The Avengers in the Same Movie?

by Spencer Perry
June 09, 2012

At last year's Comic-Con, Avi Arad was asked about the potential of Spider-man and The Avengers meeting up on the big screen and he brushed it off. He seemed to think Spider-Man had enough stories behind him that he didn't need to be a part of the team.

Now after the movie juggernaut that The Avengers has become, he's having second thoughts.

When talking to Crave Online about it Arad said, "Everything is possible. If something like that happens, it’s great for Disney, it’s great for Sony, if the right story comes in. We are now working on Venom first. It’s our first out, so our thinking is in the right direction. Avengers to me was an expected success so I never looked at it because Avengers was successful.”

"The way to make team-up movies work is to create the raw materials, both technically and creatively, in other movies first," he continued. "Team-ups can happen once you create the character, establish the CG, otherwise it’s not affordable.”

What do you think? Think Spider-Man appearing in an Avengers movie is ever gonna happen?
So Arad 'brushes it off' last year but now he wants it to happen? Could it be more that SONY is wanting a piece of THE AVENGERS' pie?

I'm like the majority of the comments that you'll read at these other sites. I just wish that Marvel would get back all of their characters! Let Disney buy them out, whatever.. But ya know what I'm seeing here? The possibility that these other studios may want to do collaborations with Marvel Studios. Now they want to jump on the bandwagon! Can't you just see it? FOX comes to Marvel Studios with the idea, "Hey guys! Fantastic 4 & X-men are other superhero teams like the Avengers & in the comics they're in the same universe. So why not pull our resources & make it so on the big screen?!"

Comments anyone? Here we fans are basically wanting the same thing but it seemed impossible under the circumstances but now even those studios want to do this?! Tell me this ain't a cash grab!

Probably is sony wanting a peoce of avengers. But I just can't see spidey with avengers. As much as I would love for spidey to be in the MCU. It would be wicked sweet if sony/fox did do a joint thing with marvel/disney. But on other hand I wouldn't want sony/fox mucking up things in exec end of things.

Hm. I wonder if they could finagle a deal out of this. "We'll do three Spider-Man/Avengers crossovers... in exchange for Sony relinquishing Spider-Man in ten/fifteen/twenty years time."

The fact that there was apparently no termination/expiration clause in that contract Marvel signed continues to blow my mind.

Isn't it SAD that a major corporation like Disney, is willing to work with ANOTHER major corporation like Sony, in order to produce something not only PROFITABLE, but something the people want to see?

But yet the Bros. Warner have owned DC fucking Comics for how long, and they have done jack-diddly-shit up til now? I mean, it's not just ME is it? Surely some of you here can see how this makes absolutely NO freakin' sense whatsoever, right?

I know right ap since 2000 with comic films being big business what have we gotten from dc. Not much. When I still see no reason why they couldn't have had flash, ww, etc.... character off the ground. What we got instead. Crap catwomen, crap jonah hex, gl failed. Watchmen was a film nicely done but wasn't as profitiable as wb probably wanted. And they screwed the poouch with singer on superman. And well out of all this all we got was nolan batman. Where as marvel even there bad films we still seen xmen, blade, ff, dd, elektra, spiderman, hulk, ironman, captain america, thor, and the big cherry on cake avengers. That is why I liked marvel from marvel studios to the other studios who have marvel rights they try. Sure not all films been commerical or critical hits. And we got wb just sitting there with there heads in there asses doing nothing.

This is like I've said before in the past. At least Marvel tries! Sure, there's some hit & miss, especially when we're talking about the characters licensed out to the other studios, but here's the key word:

TRY!!!!!

So Marvel, whether Marvel Studios or the others, are willing to take chances. WB/DC? Meh. Sure, Nolan's films have been profitable but everything else is pretty much kaput. The main quality product they put out is WATCHMEN. It's not our faults for the apathetic audience in that film's case. But otherwise it's like a bunch of retards trying to make superhero films. Here's just hoping that THE MAN OF STEEL finally breaks that mold. That is, if the TUMBLEWEED doesn't consume it first!

It's funny, you see stuff like THIS about Disney:

Want to See Spider-Man and The Avengers in the Same Movie? Evil_corporation

When Time Warner is even MORE about the $$. Disney may be a soul-less corporation in it for the dough, but they DO go above & beyond to give what the people want. From time-to-time.

But TW? They won't do SHIT, unless they "think" major profits are involved. And boy, they sure do listen to some stupid people....

The Disney boycott never made sense to me. I suspect you know my views about the gay agenda but let's be reasonable here, you know?

How Spider-Man Was Almost In ‘The Avengers,’ Sort Of

Hi folks!

It feels weird to be writing not about ‘Iron Man 3′ these days. We figure we’d let everyone settle into there being no Iron Patriot.

Oh – and I got to do some press for The Amazing Spider-Man, which I’ve been a big promoter of, not that the film is going to need my help.

There are a few stories floating around about Venom and if he’s going to tie into Amazing Spider-Man (probably, because why wouldn’t you?) and a few quotes about how Spider-Man and Avengers could cross over if it was good for both Marvel and Sony (doubt that deal will ever happen). Either way, I thought it was time for me to chime in with my Spider-Man/Avengers tidbit (because I already wrote a long rant on Venom on my personal blog a few months ago)

I was paired with Avi Arad and Matthew Tolmach for my 1-on-1, which was very nice of Sony, especially since I’m not sure how welcome I am in certain Marvel camps (I didn’t get invited to Brave, which is Pixar, which is Disney and so is Marvel – coincidence or paranoia?). I would have loved to talk to the cast, but I got what I was looking for.

Some recent Marvel Movie Universe fans might think that Kevin Fiege is the be-all-end-all of Marvel news, but back before there was a Marvel Studios, all we film obsessed Marvelites had was Avi Arad, and my discussion with him and Matt comes from that fanboy perspective. I tried to hold them accountable for something, and I did, only to find myself agreeing with their reasoning…I’ll be less vague about this when I get to the actual transcribed interview.

Marvel fanboys are tough to please, but I try to represent us as appreciative. We don’t wish death on the Spider-Man and X-Men franchises so they can revert back to some master studio (especially when that master studio plays it quick and cheap sometimes, ask Jon Favs), but we long for Spider-Man to meet Iron Man or everyone to try and kill Wolverine.

Imagine my surprise when I heard a rumor that the Oscorp Tower from Amazing Spider-Man was “this close” to becoming part of the sky line for Avengers. (Hint: pretty surprised).

Want to See Spider-Man and The Avengers in the Same Movie? Oscorptower-753x400

Here’s the story – last week, The Amazing Spider-Man’s production designer J Michael Riva passed away after suffering a stroke at the age of 63. Not only did he design the Oscorp Tower for ASM, but he has a staggering resume of awesomeness including The Goonies, The Color Purple, A Few Good Men, Congo, Evolution, and the upcoming Django Unchained.

Oh – And the Iron Man movies.

That design overlap, and the stunning look of the Oscorp Tower (seriously stunning) was enough for Marvel Studios and Sony to have the discussion about inserting Oscorp into The Avengers skyline. The Unified Marvel Manhattan Skyline almost existed.

By the time the Oscorp building was fully designed, The Avengers digital Manhattan was already basically rendered and there was some up-conversion that needed to go down, so – for timing – it was scrapped.

BUT – Sony and Disney were going to let this happen. THAT’s the key thing here. Timing just didn’t work out.

That makes me sad. I told Avi and Matt that I realize it’s a business impossibility to share the characters, (“Thank you for understanding that” - Matt Tolmach to me), but wanted to get across that these small, small things are enough for the fanboys.

Matt said they’d love to do more like this, meaning crossovers on the smaller level.

Next step – letting someone use the word “MUTANT” outside of a Fox movie, right?

I also got to talk sequels, mysterious origins and – surprisingly – Fantastic Four (but not what you’re expecting) with these men. That’ll be coming soon. HERE. At Latino-Review. It was nice to sit down with people who respect the property, and I assure you that’s who these people are.

And I’m sure we’ll have some other scoopage between here and there. I’m trying to get on Marvel’s actual Hit List. That’s the only way I’ll ever meet Deadpool.

Fuck me. I was right again!!
