Comic Book Resources wrote:Dynamite Entertainment has signed a comprehensive licensing agreement with Conde Nast for comic books based on one of the most popular cultural icons in comics - The Shadow! Arguably the most famous pulp hero of the 20th century, The Shadow has been featured in comic books, comic strips, television, video games, and at least five motion pictures!

"We are pleased and excited to entrust The Shadow to the capable, creative hands of Dynamite Entertainment," said Jerry Birenz, licensing attorney for Conde Nast. "We look forward to a continuation of the long tradition of The Shadow in comic books, and the enjoying of the new adventures and experiences Dynamite Entertainment will bring us."

Introduced as a mysterious radio narrator by David Chrisman, William Sweets, and Harry Engman Charlot for Street and Smith Publications, The Shadow was fully developed and transformed into a pop culture icon by pulp writer Walter B. Gibson.

The Shadow debuted on July 31, 1930, as the mysterious narrator of the Street and Smith radio program Detective Story Hour. After gaining popularity among the show's listeners, the narrator became the star of The Shadow Magazine on April 1, 1931, a pulp series created and primarily written by the prolific Gibson.

"Pursuing The Shadow has been a life time quest," says Dynamite Entertainment President and Publisher Nick Barrucci. "Dynamite is working to launch the Shadow with some of the comic industries leading talent including John Cassaday, Alex Ross, Ryan Sook and Jae Lee, with more to be announced - creators who will bring justice to The Shadow. We will be releasing more exciting news about The Shadow series soon!"

AWESOME!!!! All we need to do now is figure out a way to get Gerard Jones in there as the writer and we'll be in great shape.

My hope is that they make no attempt to "modernize" the story. The Shadow is and should be a period thing. Leave him in the 30's and 40's where he belongs.

All I know about 'The Shadow' is based on the Alec Baldwin film. But even based on that, I tend to agree with colors.

Speaking of the shadow, I saw news the other day another old pulp character was getting second life in comics. Some character called the spider.

The Shadow gets a new series from Dynamite Empty Re: The Shadow gets a new series from Dynamite

Very cool sketches... although that "Shadowette" worries me.

But as to the series at hand, to get ready for The Shadow #1, over the past week I've been listening to old radio shows, reading some of the DC stuff from the 70's, the Dark Horse comics from the 90's and even checked out a few pulps. I've avoided The Shadow Strikes! by The Mighty Gerard Jones because, honestly, that series is definitive as far as I'm concerned. Seems unfair to subconsciously set myself up for disappointment by reading that series.

But then again, if any writer is fit to challenge The Mighty Gerard Jones as the best Shadow comics writer, Garth Ennis is arguably the boy for the job. His MAX series is to the Punisher what Strikes! is for The Shadow, as far as I'm concerned. So you have to wonder what Ennis can do when with the material.

I've also avoided the movie in my prep for the Dynamite series. I don't dislike the movie but it doesn't have the same grit and darkness going that the comics, pulps and even radio series had. It comes off too influenced by Batman, Dick Tracy and other stuff from that same basic period. It's like it doesn't know if it wants to be a noir'ish, pulpy, gritty, borderline horror movie or if it wants to be more of a heroic, uplifting piece with some black comedy thrown in. It's not bad but it's not The Shadow movie I'd like to see.

And I was going to write that the reference wasn't intentional... but then the similarities are too many to be a coincidence. Okay, so maybe he was riffing on that cover.

The original was a painted cover, and that's what Alex Ross does.

So I'm 100% positive it was an "homage".

The Shadow gets a new series from Dynamite Empty Re: The Shadow gets a new series from Dynamite

If you're wanting to avoid spoilers, find some other thread.

I guess I hadn't realized how known as a "Shadow guy" I'd become but the minute I came through the door at my comics shop tonight, I was immediately pounced on by two employees wanting info on The Shadow.

But here's the thing. The Shadow is everything Batman thinks he himself is. Some punk draws a gun on Batman? He kicks the piss out of him. Some punk draws a gun on The Shadow? He glares at them and the punk calls it a day. You tell me which is more badassed.

And The Shadow is a genuine mystery. Lamont Cranston, Kent Allard, either, both or neither could be his true identity. Hell, my basic profile of The Shadow is that he isn't completely human. Not anymore anyway (if he ever was).

What does this mean for the current issue? Well, there are some controversies there. My reading of the scene in question is not that "The Shadow talked to dead people". Basically, The Shadow hunkers down over a dying man before serving him up the fire opal special to get some background info. Some people have read what I think is waaaaaay too much into that scene. Assuming there's anything supernatural/paranormal about it at all, it seems more centered on the girasol ring than some superhuman/supernatural ability of The Shadow's directly.

Something else is that the comic fairly bluntly says is that this version of The Shadow has the ability to cloud minds. That... bothers me. I mean, I realize why the radio show did it. The Shadow in the pulps had the unique ability to avoid being seen even when he's standing in the middle of a huge but sparsely filled room drenched in light. It's just how he rolls. He can do that. In the pulps. Dude's a mystery, remember? But how do you bring that across in a radio show? Well, the shortest distance between two points is the mind cloud bit. The faux invisibility bit works for the radio show but I've always thought it borderline redundant for textual and visual media.

The "brief glimpses" of peoples' future? That is a definite new thing. Not sure how I feel about it. On the one hand, hey, "not entirely human", "The Shadow is a mystery", etc. But on the other... I dunno. Something about this kinda bothers me.

That said, I'm onboard with the grit and brutality of this series. Sad as it may be, one issue isn't enough to judge a comic these days so I'll stick around at least through the first arc and see how things play out. Looking forward to it.

Now that the first Dynamite issue is out there, I've felt at liberty to move on with other Shadow things. First up was The Shadow Strikes #30 and #31, which you could loosely call "The Shadow- Year One" even though those are ironically the final two issues of that series. For my money, if the series had to end that was the perfect way to do it.

It's basically the story of how Kent Allard became, first, Lamont Cranston and, later, The Shadow. Apart from being ridiculously well-written (as might be expected from The Mighty Gerard Jones), it plays into the mystery and ambiguity that The Shadow is all about. The last two or three pages leave room for interpretation; this storyline is absolute canon if you want it to be, complete bullshit if you prefer that or perhaps something in between the two if that works better for you. Leave it to a writer as awesome as him to let you have it any way you want.

Don't fuck with The Mighty Gerard Jones. He will end you.
