Dissing Superman
Wasn't sure where else to put this. So here goes.
Feels like WB, particularly the animation division, can only really process the idea of a Superman story if he's stricken with cancer, dying or, eventually I'm sure, giving up. Apart from that, if he's present at all, he's there in the capacity of a team player, usually a supporting character to make Batman look cool.
And now there's a Dark Knight Returns adaptation on the way. Somehow I can already picture them making a big deal out of the scene where Batman kicks Superman's ass. The fact that Superman wasn't really putting up a big fight in the comic is probably going to get ignored and Batman truly will kick Superman's ass. I've always hated that concept (if Batman and Superman duke it out, Batman's paste, period, end of conversation) and now it'll be enshrined in the public.
There are bigger things to make a fuss over, I guess, but this ongoing disrespect for Superman seriously aggravates me. I've wondered if it's happening because of the legal shit going on with the Siegel Parasites but it's annoying no matter what.

It definitely fits the Misc. section.

It goes back to what I said in another thread. HollyWeird feeds off it's own regurgitation, and thinks it "knows" what we want.
'Superman III' and 'Superman IV' grossed worse and worse at the box office. In fact, IV came out just 2 short years before 'Batman 89' DESTROYED at the BO. What did that tell the Bros. Warner? People love Batman and don't give two shits about Superman. The Dark Knight Returns had already come out by this point, so the films pretty much "confirmed" what that book had already told people:
Batman = Cool
Superman = Tool
And DC Comics has been MORE than happy to continue this trend.

They have purposely painted themselves into a corner, and are having a little party there.
Make a movie where Superman puts Batman into a body cast in .3 seconds, and people will say: "Uhhh, Superman is too powerful anyway. Big deal.", and won't buy it. Put out an animated version of TDKR, showcasing Batman taking Superman down and they say: "See! Batman is more badass than that punk Superman! Superman duh suxor!!" and it sells gang-busters. Why?
Because we live in a culture that builds people up, only to have the opportunity to tear them down. And with a fictional character like Superman, it's 30+ years and counting.
With no end in sight.

That definitely plays a part, I just know it goes deeper.

Re: Dissing Superman
Here's a thought. Regardless of all of these past travesties, here's hoping that THE MAN OF STEEL once again makes Superman cool or 'kewl' as duh Internet speak. I mean, trunks or not, this film looks to be shaping up to really be something else! We already know it'll be awesome visually because of Zack Snyder. From the sound of things the story is gonna be equally awesome. But let's face it, if duh Nolan is involved in this project in any capacity, he's gonna make sure the story is good. Why? Because it's gonna have his name on it as producer.
Anyway, here's hoping that Henry Cavill can capture the hearts of this generation just like Christopher Reeve did his own. What am I wanting? For Superman to be relevant again! I hope the legal issues are all resolved & this film ends up being a blockbuster! Ya know, I still see people wearing Superman T-shirts in public even in the 'here & now' & that's with all the crap the character has to contend with. Maybe next year that will all change? Not the T-shirts mind you, just the crapola.
