Since the film is about to debut I don't see a thread for box office reports so Webhead, I'm beating you to the punch on this one! Wink

One reason for this is I have cause for concern. I checked my local IMAX online & tickets for this weekend's screening have pretty much sold out, period! I at least managed to pre-order for THE AVENGERS. However, it looks nigh impossible to get tickets for TDKR, that is, unless you go during the week which none have sold out so far. But the weekend? All sold out except for early showings in the morning when it's not convenient for me to go. It appears that if I go at all this weekend I'm gonna have to drag the wife to just a regular theater & pay a matinee price. So I guess the question is, does Avengers have anything to worry about?! What's going on here?!

Another reason I'm posting is because they apparently have just had the premier in LA & I found a pic online that should prove very interesting. Possible spoilers? I seem to be having trouble posting the pic but it's a pic of Levitt posing with a pic of Batman in one of those 'makes you wonder' kind of ways. Hopefully I can post it later.

EDIT TO ADD: Got it!

I too was planning to go to imax for tdkr. But when I got tickets a few days ago they informed me they sold out for awhile. But on to box office. Let's see how well the film can preformance and what staying power it has like avengers did. Now I still expect the film to open good. Probably 8-10mill for midnight screening. Then opening weekend probably be 100mill-140mill range. Overall boxoffice run for domestically I say probably 250mill-300mill for its total haul. And probably another 300mill-350mill internationally for a 700-800mill total haul. Which is still a good success for wb/nolan even though it prrobably won't break a billion like tdk.

I doubt it. But even if it does, meh. It'd be nice if Avengers went unchallenged for a long time but this isn't a Presidential election; life won't change much if TDKRises outgrosses Avengers. And let's face it, Avengers had unbelievable word of mouth going behind it. But even then, as with TDK, there's only so much of the movie's legs you can chalk up to word of mouth. Sooner or later, you have to realize that the continued success was due to repeat viewings.

It's not like I've seen TDKRises or whatever but I seriously doubt it'll be that captivating.

As for me, in the end it's still Batman. Where else am I going to be? Dunno as I'll see it at midnight or even opening weekend but probably sometime early on in the theatrical run, I'll give it a shot. I want to see the MOS teaser/trailer if nothing else.

Apparently some early bird review reported that Levitt is only ever just a good, honest cop; he never becomes Batman in any way.

It's gonna make a shit load of money. The whole AVENGERS vs TDKR I think is nonsense because whether one makes more money than the other, everybody wins in the long run. 2012 is going to be remembered as a VERY good year for spectacles I think. There hadn't been as many event movies since 2007, but what makes this year stand out is that a lot of them are actually turning out very good. Hell, it doesn't even end with the Summer as later in the year you have THE HOBBIT and SKYFALL along the way.

You know, I totally forgot about HANCOCK. I can't believe that was a hit. Laughing Anyway, while the past few years had plenty of hits I'm thinking of a larger scale of event films like 1989 and 2007 had all across the map.

Yeah, 1989 had BATMAN. The real film Batman as far as I'm concerned. Starring Michael Keaton as the bestest Bats ever. Ditto for Joker Jack. Too bad Shumacher messed things up. But 1989 also had STAR TREK 5. Wink

Some Advance Ticket Sales Numbers for TDKR:
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/dark-knight-rises-pre-sale-tickets-25-million-351301

BOX OFFICE: THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Scores An Incredible $25M In Advance Ticket Sales

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that The Dark Knight Rises has now earned a whopping $25 million in advance ticket sales; one of the highest figures of all-time. With analysts (and at this point, common sense) indicating that it will surpass The Dark Knight's $158.4 million to earn the accolade of being the highest opening for a 2D film, the question now is exactly how much it will end up making in total. With predictions of between $185 million and $195 million, Warner Bros. themselves are estimating a far more conservative $170 million, pointing out that, "Anything above that is going into unknown territory." To put it into context for you, Marvel's The Avengers currently has the highest opening ever at the North American box office with $207.4 million, although $35 million of that came from the higher 3D ticket prices. Regardless, the film will have the widest IMAX release of all-time at 330 theaters, meaning that it will easily surpass the record-breaking $15.3 million earned by The Avengers. Meanwhile, the following press release was issued by London's BFI IMAX earlier today.

London’s BFI IMAX cinema announces today that it has now sold 62,300 tickets for The Dark Knight Rises – The IMAX Experience, grossing £1,001,300, two days ahead of the film’s opening this Friday 20 July. Since tickets went on sale five weeks ago, thousands of Batman fans have been snapping them up to ensure they see the film in the best possible way – on Britain’s biggest screen.

The figures for both the advance box office gross and the number of tickets sold have beaten the cinema’s previous best-ever advance sales, which were for Avatar in December 2009 (£607,000 sales for 47,000 tickets). The Dark Knight Rises also broke BFI IMAX records for highest first day sales ever (24,754 tickets grossing £409,838) and the highest first week sales ever (38,658 tickets grossing £634,013). Both these records were previously held by Prometheus. 43 shows are now sold out, including screenings for early birds at 04.25 and 04.55 this weekend.

Nolan is utilising IMAX cameras even more extensively than he did on The Dark Knight, which had marked the first time ever that a major feature film was partially shot with IMAX cameras. Over an hour of the footage from the film is in IMAX format, with the image filling the giant screen. Dennis Laws, General and Technical Manager, BFI IMAX comments: "These figures prove that seeing The Dark Knight Rises in IMAX, to truly experience Christopher Nolan’s incredible vision for the film, is an unmissable event this summer. People are even flying in from abroad especially to see the film at BFI IMAX. We want as many people as possible to be able to see it, so we’re already adding extra shows to meet the demand."

Hmm if the actual totals are close to these looks like opening would be more then i put it. But we will see come end of the weekend on how it goes. But even hear they dont think it will take avengers opening. But still for wb a good opening and then its all on wom on how long it plays and does in theaters. I still feel toal dom will probably end in 300-350mil range, and simular internationally for 700-900mill total run.

Nolanite- "Marvel cheated! Avengers only outgrossed TDKRises on opening night because it had a 3D release!"
Me- "Um, TDKRises opened at $30 million. Avengers opened at $80 million. You can't HONESTLY think a 3D release would've closed that gap! Besides, Nolan could've had a 3D release if he wanted one; he didn't."

Nolanite- "Marvel cheated! They had Avengers screenings before the official opening day!"
Me- "They had the usual press screenings and premiere parties like any other movie. I don't think admission is charged for those things. But even if it is, it would be a mathematical irrelevance. So Avengers might've had, what, an eighty thousand dollar head start? Big deal!"

It sure is going to be a long summer. And I congratulate wb/dc on opening midnight success for the film. But let's see where the rest of weekend/run goes.

Midnight screening box office figures:
http://m.superherohype.com/news/articles/171899-warner-bros-reports-27-million-midnights-for-dark-knight-rises
UPDATE: Warner Bros. Reports $30.6 Million Midnights for Dark Knight Rises by SuperHeroHype July 20, 2012 Share this story

Ahead of The Avengers but behind Deathly Hallows - Part 2

Amidst reports of the shooting tragedy in Aurora, Colorado, Warner Bros. Pictures' The Dark Knight Rises has reported an estimated midnight gross of $30.6 million in 3,700 locations, besting the $18 million reported by Marvel's The Avengers, the current opening weekend record holder, this past May.

While this is a strong start for the conclusion to Christopher Nolan's trilogy, starring Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tom Hardy, it's hard to tell whether this means The Dark Knight Rises may once again claim the opening weekend record it previously held with The Dark Knight, because the threequel is likely to be more frontloaded than its predecessor. That $30.6 million is also below the $43.5 million amassed at midnight by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 last summer before it broke The Dark Knight's opening weekend record.

Nolan's previous Batman movie made $18.4 million in midnights before setting its opening weekend record with $158.4 million, but that number was subsequently bested by the $22.2 million in midnights for Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince--that went on to have a $58 million opening day--and then the $26.2 million in midnights made by The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which grossed $142.8 million in its first weekend in November 2009.

Right now, it's still undetermined whether The Dark Knight Rises will behave similar to the previous installment or The Avengers and maintain that midnight business over the weekend.

Check back tomorrow and over the weekend for updates.

Thought I read somewhere that TDKRises is tracking to have something like a $70/$80 million opening weekend. Now, assuming you buy that you sorta have to acknowledge that's about half'ish what TDK opened at.

That's one hell of a come down, Avengers or no Avengers... which, it should be noted, has yet to have a sub-$1 million weekend in spite of new competition *AND* 12 weeks in release. I wonder if TDKRises will have those kinds of legs...

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES BOX OFFICE REPORTS Empty Re: THE DARK KNIGHT RISES BOX OFFICE REPORTS

Post  webhead2006 Fri Jul 20, 2012 4:05 pm

Last numbers I recall reading a few days ago they are/where expecting 150-170mmill for total opening weekend.

Friday's estimated totals for TDKR:
http://www.deadline.com/2012/07/dark-knight-rises-banks-25m-pre-sales-and-85-ticket-sales-more-b-o-records-scalpers-brinks-trucks-than-avengers/
BOX OFFICE: THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Heading To $80M - $85M Friday
It's becoming clear that the opening weekend record might be broken, once again. Christopher Nolan's final chapter The Dark Knight Rises is expected to gross between $80M and $85M. More after the jump...
WolvieCBM - 7/20/2012

Will it set a new opening weekend record? That is the question right now for The Dark Knight Rises. According to Friday estimates, the Christopher Nolan-directed film is expected to make somewhere between $80 million and $85 million. If the estimates hold, that would mean it's about even with Marvel's record-breaking The Avengers for opening day, but it seems it won't reach that opening day record set by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. While the opening day was always expected to be huge, it's the numbers for Saturday and Sunday that will play the biggest role.

Deadline also mentions that the film is now at $125.5 million worldwide, and that Hollywood is predicting an opening weekend in the range between $180 million and $200 million. Reports also adds something unusual, saying that Warner Bros. won't report any numbers this weekend:

"I’ve just been told by a Warner Bros spokeswoman that the studio may do this “out of sensitivity to people”. Through midday today the studio was reporting The Dark Knight Rises grosses internationally and domestically as usual. Now it may suspend its box office reporting all weekend for Christopher Nolan’s final Batman trilogy installment. A final decision has not yet been made."

Post  webhead2006 Sat Jul 21, 2012 10:20 pm

With the whole shooting thing and that taking main stage of things if any one did want to keep up on bo info here is what tdkr did fri.

Friday totals for TDKR:
http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/Wolvie09/news/?a=64269
UPDATE: BOX OFFICE: Friday Number Lower Than Expected For TDKR; Heading To $170M Weekend In US?

Well,it seems that the Christopher Nolan-directed film grossed around $77.2 million on its opening day, which is lower than previously reported yesterday. Now,the film is heading to a big,but not record-breaking weekend... WolvieCBM - 7/21/2012

UPDATED: Once again, the estimates were a little bit off. Sometimes the numbers go up, sometimes down. It this case, the Friday number was down a couple of millions, as it was previously reported that Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises is set for $80M - $85M opening day. According to Deadline's update, the film managed to make $77.2 million yesterday, which is the 3rd biggest opening day in US. While it may not break the opening weekend record, this final chapter is still set for the biggest opening for a 2D film. Reports also adds:

"Look for a huge drop Saturday because of the $30.6M in midnight shows, including $2.2M IMAX grosses. (Previous installment The Dark Knight dropped -29% its Saturday, and this should be no different.) My sources say the 3-day weekend cume looks to be in the $170M range with the caveat that the Colorado tragedy may have an impossible-to-predict effect.".

Stay tuned for more updates. The Dark Knight Rises is now playing in theatres.

Definitely not to belittle the Aurora tragedy in any way but let me stress that the following response is about the 'Avengers vs. TDKR' debate which is probably what I would've said anyway about TDKR's performance this weekend.

AWWWW! Shucks! TDKR didn't beat Avengers?! Whoda thunk it?! I guess duh hulking nothing did get crushed by the HULK after all! But I'll wait to post any crow pics until I know for certain. Wink

After the midnight premiere, it never crossed my mind that TDKRises would have a bigger opening weekend than Avengers so this isn't too big a surprise. Best case scenario, there's a $50 million gap between opening weekend for TDKRises and Avengers... and fuck you to the Nolanites, you can't chalk up every single bit of that differential to the lack of a 3D release.

Actually, it never crossed my mind that TDKRises would have a bigger opening weekend than Avengers even before the midnight premiere but you get the picture, I think.

Another box office update:
http://www.deadline.com/2012/07/dark-knight-rises-banks-25m-pre-sales-and-85-ticket-sales-more-b-o-records-scalpers-brinks-trucks-than-avengers/
BOX OFFICE: THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Now Looks Set For A $163 Million Weekend

Lower than previously predicted,The Dark Knight Rises now looks set to finish the weekend with a still record breaking (for the highest 2D opening ever) $163 million. Whether the tragic shooting on Friday has played a role in this remains unclear. Read on for details. Josh Wilding - 7/22/2012

Deadline reports that after taking roughly $77.2 million on Friday (giving it the third highest opening ever and the best gross in a single day for a 2D movie), The Dark Knight Rises dropped on Saturday with $46.2 million and is now expected to make $39.3 million today. That takes its 3-day weekend total to $163 million (give or take), although it's possible that figure will completely change by close of business today. Why? Well, Warner Bros. and various other tracking agencies have decided to withhold official domestic and worldwide numbers until Monday as a mark of respect to those affected by the shooting in Colorado. These estimates are usually fairly close to the final figure, but this is a very uncertain weekend as it is impossible to predict what kind of impact that tragedy has had on the box office performance of the highly anticipated finale to Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy. The film does now hold the accolade of having the highest ever opening for a 2D picture, although it certainly won't come close to toppling the $207.4 million collected by Earth's Mightiest Heroes when Marvel's The Avengers hit the big screen back in May (however, it's worth bearing in mind that over $30 million of that came from the higher priced 3D tickets). TDKR box office update:

BOX OFFICE: THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Hits $200 Million After Six Days Of Release

Marvel's The Avengers passed $200 million during its opening weekend in North America, and it has now been confirmed that The Dark Knight Rises is the seventh film of 2012 to break that barrier. Hit the jump for details. Josh Wilding - 7/26/2012

The tragic shooting at a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises last week almost certainly had an impact on its opening weekend ($160.9 million), but the third and final film in Christopher Nolan's trilogy has now passed $200 million domestically. This makes it the seventh film of 2012 to hit the landmark figure, and while it didn't get there quiet as quickly as the other big superhero movie of the year - Marvel's The Avengers - it still did so in only six days. It earned £13.8 million yesterday, taking its current domestic total to $211.8 million. It is thought that it will hit $280 million by the end of next weekend and is performing much, much better than most third instalments do when compared to their predecessors. Another boxoffice update for TDKR:
http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/JoshWildingNewsAndReviews/news/?a=64676
BOX OFFICE: THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Looks Set For A $60 Million Weekend

Following the news that The Dark Knight Rises has grossed over $224 million domestically and $375 million worldwide, analysts are predicting that Christopher Nolan's final Batman movie will take $60 million this weekend following a 60% week-over-week drop. Read on for details. Josh Wilding - 7/27/2012

According to Variety, early returns have indicated that The Dark Knight Rises is set to earn between $18 million and $20 million on Friday, putting it on course for a weekend total of $60 million. That's roughly a 60% week-over-week drop. When compared to the 52% drop that The Dark Knight had in 2008 and Marvel's The Avengers 50% drop earlier this year, this may seem pretty steep, but it is holding well according to several studio execs. Why the drop then? Well, the audience that the threequel appeals to may play the biggest role in that. "It's a lot darker and male-driven, when you look at the trailers," the site was told by one analyst, while the Olympics are also likely to dent its box office impact. Another factor is the tragic shooting in Aurora, Colorado, last week which left 12 dead, with a recent poll revealing that 25% of moviegoers are still reluctant to visit the theatre. The Dark Knight Rises has so far grossed over $224 million domestically and $375 million worldwide.

So TDKRises only needed six days to do what Singerman needed four months to do.

Yes, I'm going to rub it in every single time a movie crosses $200 million way earlier than Singerman did. Suck it, Apologists!

Am I the only one who thinks this all sounds like a bunch of excuses? My gut tells me that mass audiences aren't taking to TDKRises in the same way they did TDK. I'm sure it'll still be a big movie and very profitable and all that but I just can't picture the audiences going crazy over this one like they did TDK. There's a limit to how many national tragedies and Olympic games you can blame for that.
