Veronica Mars Movie Is a Go: Kristen Bell, Creator Rob Thomas and More React!

Veronica Mars, Cast UPN

Veronica Mars fans have long dreamed of a movie that would bring them back to Neptune. Those dreams are finally becoming a reality.

Series creator Rob Thomas and star Kristen Bell launched a Kickstarter campaign, hoping to raise $2 million to fund the long-talked-about film, and the show's fans—whom Bell lovingly calls Marshmallows—rose to the occastion, reaching the goal in only 10 hours.

Thomas, Bell, her costars, friends, fiancés and more immediately took to Twitter to share their reactions to the good news. Plus, Parenthood star Lauren Graham revealed that she's one of the donors!

Kristen Bell: "I love you guys. You are all SO spectacular. I am speechless."
Rob Thomas: "Hallelujah! It's a green light my friends. I love you all, but particularly the donors among you. #Veronicamars .@IMKristenBell"
Enrico Colantoni: "I love that we raised 2M for VMars, that's cool, but what's even cooler is that I have 1000 new followers without @verify thanks you guys!"
Ryan Hansen: "I can't believe it!!!!! #veronicamars fans are the BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!! #VERONICAMARSMOVIE is happening!!"
Lauren Graham: "I just gave some dollars...#WBForever #eventhoughnowitscalledtheCW"
Dax Shepard: "To everyone who helped by most beautiful, nerdy angel (@IMKristenBell) today, THANK YOU!!!"
Seth Green: "Congrats to @IMKristenBell and #VeronicaMarsMovie fans on doing THIS today. #PeoplePower"

I'm of two minds about this. On the one hand, yeah, I'm a HUGE Veronica Mars fan. I mourned the show's cancellation (even though I understood completely) and I'm overjoyed that a movie is on the way. Better than nothing, right? I figured the most we Veronica Mars fans could hope for was maybe a comic book some day to wrap up the dangling plot threads of after season 3.

On the other hand... basically a big movie studio with hundreds of millions to spend now gets to make a movie with zero financial risk but 100% profit. There's literally no risk in this for them apart from distribution and maybe some other minor risks. If we were talking about some under-funded, unknown indie movie about risky subject matter, that'd be one thing. But this was a TV show that lasted three seasons and is owned by one of the biggest media companies in the world. And now they get to outsource the fucking financing of the movie and reap ALL the benefits. The capitalist in me is torn. If someone else is willing to bear your financial risk for you so that you stand only to profit, aren't you a fool if you don't do it? But then again, isn't financial risk an essential element of any truly free enterprise? You could argue it either way. But at the end of the day, I'm not comfortable contributing to a big media production like this so rest assured they hit $2 million (and counting, it seems) without me.

As I say, they reached their $2 million budget (and $5.4 million actual haul) without me. So obviously mine is the minority opinion here.

Whatever. I get a Veronica Mars movie, which is more than I could've ever hoped for considering how the show was all cancelled and stuff. And it looks cool. Don't know wtf happened to Mac's hair but the movie? Looks awesome. Can't wait!
