British actor Charlie Cox has secured the titular role of “Daredevil” in Marvel/Netflix’s upcoming live-action series, sources confirm to Variety.

The character was last seen on the big screen in 2003, when Ben Affleck donned Matt Murdock’s signature red horns. “Daredevil” is one of four Marvel properties set to headline serialized solo series set in and around Hell’s Kitchen, New York, along with “Jessica Jones,” “Iron Fist” and “Luke Cage.” The quartet will then band together in a Netflix miniseries event titled “The Defenders.” The initial order  for “Daredevil” is 13 episodes.

Over the weekend, news broke that Drew Goddard had stepped down as showrunner of the streaming series, to be replaced by “Spartacus” creator Steven S. DeKnight. Goddard will now serve as a consultant on the show, but will reportedly focus most of his energies on writing and directing Sony’s upcoming “Spider-Man” spinoff “Sinister Six.”

After dominating the box office with its superhero franchises in recent years, Marvel has begun investing heavily in the small screen; in addition to renewing “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD,” ABC recently ordered “Captain America” spinoff “Agent Carter,” starring Hayley Atwell, for midseason.

Cox starred opposite Claire Danes in “Stardust” and had a regular role in season three of HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire.”

Marvel declined to comment on the casting rumor, which was first reported by Latino Review.

Cox is repped by WME and 3 Arts Entertainment.

Don't know him from anything that I can think of off-hand but Marvel hasn't let me down yet.

I only know him from 'Boardwalk Empire', and all I remember about him was wanting his character to die.

Dark hair with red highlights... Guess we should've seen it coming but I still kinda wish we get redheads to play actual redheads for once. I don't mind redheads playing non-redheads (hey hey, Amy Adams) but the non-redheads playing redheads... ugh, pretenders annoy me.

Charlie Cox Talks Daredevil's Addiction to Crimefighting
Source: Heat Vision
October 21, 2014

When Charlie Cox was first tapped to take the lead in Marvel's new Netflix series Daredevil, he had no idea the level of fan fervor around this new incarnation of Matt Murdock, which he told Heat Vision during the premiere of his new film The Theory of Everything.

"It's great fun, but it also comes with a great deal of responsibility," Cox said of playing Daredevil. "I wasn't really aware of how vast the comic book world was until I became part of the Marvel universe. I went to Comic Con last week, and it's really important to a lot of people. It really is. I'm having a great time."

Cox, first glimpsed in-character wearing a black ninja stealth suit, drives home the idea that this version of The Man Without Fear is taking its cues from the dark Frank Miller era, where Murdock's vigilante nature came to the forefront.

"I've read comics after comics after comics - I've never read so many comics in my life, and we're finding moments from the comics to reference in the show," Cox explained. "We're trying to make a show that's new and much, much darker than anything I've ever seen Marvel do before. The concept that he can't stop. He's going out and he's taking the law into his own hands, and he doesn't know if he can stop. He might be addicted to it."

Also starring Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, and Vincent D’Onofrio, "Marvel’s Daredevil" follows the journey of Matt Murdock, who was blinded as a young boy but imbued with extraordinary senses, now fighting against injustice by day as a lawyer, and by night as the super hero Daredevil in modern day Hell’s Kitchen, New York City.

Marvel’s first original series on Netflix is Executive Produced by series showrunner Steven S. DeKnight ("Spartacus," "Angel") and Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods, "Buffy The Vampire Slayer") along with Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb ("Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," "Smallville") and will debut sometime in 2015.

01- That's a pretty accurate description of Daredevil. Superman has an idealistic neverending battle, Batman has a hopeless crusade but Daredevil is an addict. That plays for me.

02- That outfit also plays for me. Very much like his temporary outfit from Miller's Man Without Fear limited series. I dig it... as long as he gets a new outfit sooner or later.

03- It's tough to say if I'm more "up" for Daredevil or Jessica Jones at this point but they both sound awesome. Can't wait!
