Comic Book Resources wrote:Warner Bros. has announced that Jesse Eisenberg and Jeremy Irons have been cast in Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel" sequel. Eisenberg will play Lex Luthor, while Irons has been cast as Alfred.

"Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman’s rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940," Snyder said via press release. "What’s great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He’s a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions."

Eisenberg's memorable credits include "The Social Network" and "Zombieland," and the more recent "Now You See Me." The "Man of Steel" sequel will be his first role in a comic book film. Irons, meanwhile, most recently appeared in "Beautiful Creators" as Macon Ravenwood, but also had roles in "Die Hard: With a Vengeance," "The Man in the Iron Mask" and -- perhaps most notably -- provided the voice of Scar in "The Lion King."

The "Man of Steel" sequel is slated for a May 6, 2016 release.

Check out the full press release below.

Official Press Release

Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Jesse Eisenberg has been set to star as Lex Luthor and Jeremy Irons will play Alfred in the upcoming Zack Snyder untitled Superman/Batman film. The dual announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, and Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

Snyder stated, “Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman’s rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940. What’s great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He’s a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions.”

The director added, “As everyone knows, Alfred is Bruce Wayne’s most trusted friend, ally and mentor, a noble guardian and father figure. He is an absolutely critical element in the intricate infrastructure that allows Bruce Wayne to transform himself into Batman. It is an honor to have such an amazingly seasoned and gifted actor as Jeremy taking on the important role of the man who mentors and guides the guarded and nearly impervious façade that encapsulates Bruce Wayne.”

Snyder’s film stars Henry Cavill, reprising his role as Superman/Clark Kent, Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne, and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince. The film also reunites “Man of Steel” stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane.

The new film is currently being written by Chris Terrio, from a screenplay by David S. Goyer. Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder are producing, with Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Wesley Coller, David S. Goyer and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers.

The film is set to open worldwide on May 6, 2016, and is based on Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster, Batman characters created by Bob Kane, and Wonder Woman created by William Moulton Marston, appearing in comic books published by DC Entertainment.

I could see this if they're going for a sort of nerdy Howard Hughes type of approach. This isn't going to be a John Shea type of humanist, Gene Hackman used car salesman, Michael Rosenbaum egotist or whatever the fuck Kevin Spacey attempted. Not my first choice but then it's not like I've read the script. So hmm.

Eisenberg is NOT what I was expecting. I mean, he can act. There's no doubt about that. But that voice and those nebish qualities are kind of "boyish" in nature.

Hopefully he surprises me....

Just saw this news & unsure how to react at this point. Honestly I can't say I'm really overly familiar with either actor even though I've obviously heard of both. Anyway, rather than simply post what's already been posted, here's a quote from a similar article that adds a little more info:

http://screencrush.com/batman-vs-superman-jesse-eisenberg-lex-luthor-jeremy-irons-alfred/

After Snyder and Kevin Smith revealed during that ‘Man of Steel’ Blu-ray Q&A that Luthor would be causing trouble for Supes (and conjunctly Batman) in the still unofficially titled ‘Batman vs. Superman,’ many names were rumored to be in the mix for the role, including ‘Breaking Bad‘ star Bryan Cranston and ‘Her‘ star Joaquin Phoenix

It's not rocket science that Lex will be causing trouble but I just wonder how this will relate to Batman? And I wanna know why there ain't gonna be any Batman villains present. Seriously?!

Kind of like Puncher, I know Jeremy Irons will kill it as Alfred. I don't even need to see the movie to know that. Of all casting decisions made so far, maybe Henry Cavill was more obvious in terms of knowing in advance it was rock solid, indisputable casting where you don't even have to watch the movie to know he'll kick ass with it. Trust me, Alfred hasn't been in such good hands since Michael Gough. And I'm not just saying that because I'm in love with Irons' voice.

Actually I'm okay with that on two different levels. First, this is a Superman film. Dragging Batman's villains into the game may shift focus away from the fact that this is supposed to be Superman's story. Second, it preserves Batman's villains for the inevitable spinoff film for him. The filmmaker will have a mostly blank canvas with which to cast the movie (except for one lead actor in Affleck and one supporting actor in Irons). This works for me on several levels.

Post  thecolorsblend Sat Feb 01, 2014 7:39 pm

It's interesting how people have reacted to this. Very few people seem to view this as a positive. Some people are willing to give Eisenberg a day in court but a lot of people are convinced this is the death knell for MOS II. I'm perfectly willing to admit I never would've guessed Eisenberg in a million years. But come on, none of us have read the script. What's to say he's not the perfect guy for the role?

I mean, look, if we were talking about Michael Cera, I'd understand the outrage. Not because he can't act but because he usually plays awkward, nerdy types. Eisenberg isn't Cera.

My favorite gripe though came from someone who said that Lex should ALWAYS be several years older than Superman. No exceptions. And not because that informs the majority of Superman's comic book history (because it doesn't) but probably because that's the scenario Donner ran with (and that probably only because the Salkinds signed Hackman before he even started because they need "names" on the marquee) and that's the beginning and the end of their familiarity. Eisenberg is 30. If he was 25, even I would probably see a problem. But he's 30. Same age as Cavill. I just don't see a problem with the age shit here.

And keep in mind on Smallville Clark & Lex were roughly the same age with maybe Lex being a year or two older or something but yeah, practically classmates. And that worked! And I saw where somewhere came back with a counterpoint in Eisenberg's favor referring back to Michael Rosenbaum, i.e., that it was similar casting or whatever. Maybe it'll work. Hope so.

Who is Jesse Eisenberg really playing in the 'Man Of Steel' sequel?
We have a theory, and you're probably not going to like it
By Drew McWeeny   Monday, Feb 3, 2014 9:00 AM

Who is Jesse Eisenberg actually playing in "Man Of Steel 2"?

There's not a trick answer to this. When Warner Bros. announced last week that Jesse Eisenberg had been hired to play Lex Luthor in the sequel to last year's "Man Of Steel," that is correct. He is playing Lex Luthor. But when they say that, it's still not a definitive explanation of what you're going to see when that film arrives in theaters on the now-scheduled date of May , 2016. Which Lex Luthor is he going to play? For comic book fans, there are many possible answers to that question, and for fans of the various live-action and animated interpretations, there are even more possibilities in the mix.

I contend we're not going to see a Luthor we've seen before. Not exactly. "Man Of Steel" was controversial with fans, and there are people who hate the choices the film made, as well as plenty of people who think those choices are what made the interpretation interesting. I think Zack Snyder and David Goyer have set out to tell a particular story, and if I know Snyder (and I think I do after this long knowing him and covering his work) and if I know Goyer ( and I think I do after this long knowing him and working with him and covering his work), then they're going to continue telling that story in the sequel. Even if they are introducing more super-powered characters into the world, they're doing it as a building reaction from Superman's introduction.

This is really no different a game plan than Nolan's in the the Batman films he made. His first movie was about a world struggling to adapt to the idea of a lunatic dressed in a bat suit doing something to try and fight the corruption of a city. The second film is about escalation and what happens because of that lunatic's arrival. The Joker is a response to Batman as much as anything else. He exists because Batman needs him to exist. The Joker gives Batman a reason to fight. Only Batman can fight him. Only Batman can stop him. It's his justification as much as it's his creation.

In "Man Of Steel," one of the things that people seem to have been upset by is the level of destruction that we saw. There were some quick little Easter Eggs in the film during that destruction. One featured a satellite that said "Wayne Industries" on it. Another featured different things with the "Lexcorp" logo on them. They're quick little visual cues, but they're going to be important building blocks for the next film.

Lex Luthor, in the world of "Man Of Steel" is someone young, someone who's built a tech company that's worth a ton of cash, and someone who has a legitimate reason to dislike Superman right away.

And except for the young part, that's also a pretty fair description of Bruce Wayne.

Here's what I predict, and I hope the people who hated the destruction in "Man Of Steel," the people upset about Superman killing Zod, the people who feel like Superman didn't save anyone… I hope they all go see the sequel… because Lex Luthor is going to speak for them.

Potential BATMAN/SUPERMAN SPOILERS: Lex Luthor Character & Scene Descriptions
El Mayimbe of Latino Reviews, has addressed fanboy nation with a new article that provides potential spoilers regarding Jesse Eisenberg's ("Zombieland") Lex Luthor in Zack Snyder's untitled Batman/Superman film. Hit the jump to check them out.
By nailbiter111 - 2/6/2014

After having enough time to digest Warner Bros. shocking casting announcement, people began to wonder how Lex Luthor will be portrayed by Jesse Eisenberg ("The Social Network") in Zack Snyder's untitled Batman/Superman film. We've seen some logical speculation from Drew McWeeney of HitFix and yesterday The Hollywood Reporter chimed in with some of their own details, however, El Mayimbe has potentially trumped them all. Below, you will find a character description for the new Lex Luthor, as well as a scene description involving him and Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck). This information is said to be from an early draft of the script and not the final one which is still being worked on by Argo screenwriter, Chris Terrio.

Lex Luthor is BALD. His head is shaven to be exact. But that is not all. He has another physical trait. You see, Lex Luthor is also into body art and has a detailed sleeve tattoo of the Metropolis skyline on his right arm. Lex is also the richest man on the planet who became a self made billionaire at 18. Lex is currently the CEO of Lexcorp who is one part tech genius, one part ruthless business man and two parts Metropolis street tough. Yes, street tough.

At 14 Lex was living on the streets and for survival was initiated into a street gang. He learned early on that there was someone always bigger and stronger but never smarter. By 15 that street gang was answering to him. According to Lex, strength isn’t everything. RESOLVE is.

The tattoo thing is new but the street thug angle... I don't know if I'd go so far as to call the Byrne Age Lex a "street thug" exactly but he's definitely from the wrong side of the tracks. He murdered his parents for the insurance money and used it as capital to start Lexcorp. If this is the angle Snyder and Goyer are running with, it'll resonate more with canon than people want to believe. In fact, if any of Puncher's links are accurate, it sounds like he'll have some amount of the Silver Age Lex's age (as compared to Superman) and intellect, the Byrne Age Lex's back story and the modern/post-Azzarello/New 52 Lex's view of Superman as would-be conqueror and himself as would-be savior.

All that leaves on the table is Eisenberg's ability to pull it off. And if Snyder believes in him, why shouldn't I at least give him a shot?

Definitely not my first choice for Lex, but it doesn't matter. I said this when Affleck was cast, I trust Snyder when it comes to casting. As far as I'm concerned, nobody in his flicks has ever been miscast and I have no reason to think he'll start with this one until seeing it tells me otherwise.

It does raise an interesting question. My attitude about MOS was "guilty until proven innocent". Makes me wonder if that should continue being my attitude now that the sequel's coming.

Whatever the case at least I don't think it'll be the train wreck that is the Fantastic 4 reboot. Snyder obviously knows what he's doing. Josh Trank? Don't know about that dude. I think he's lost his way.

He's directed one movie. He's a young turk looking to make a career. Can't fault him for that but he should be a little fucking selective about the projects he takes on. Years from now, nobody's going to know or care that he was given a shitty script and no time to make a decent film. All they'll remember is that his Fantastic Four film sucked. History can be cruel that way.

Let's look at that for a moment. I saw CHRONICLE some time ago on DVD. There were things I liked about the film, there were things I didn't. Not to turn this thread into another thread but what it's really supposed to be but to clarify that, I did like the flying scenes. I kinda liked the story except I'm not the biggest fan of that 'found footage' style. However, those 'almighty powers' they seemed to display in the 3rd act somehow came off as cheesy to me. Whatever it was, it just came off that way to me. HANCOCK had much more going for it in that department.

With that being said though, I was still kinda intrigued to learn that Trank got the gig for FF, that is, until I saw what he intended to do with it! This here shows his inexperience & possibly even his immaturity. It looks like some juvenile attempt to make a name for himself by simply making FF controversial while simultaneously throwing canon out the window. Now if FF were at Marvel with Disney backing it & someone like Joss Whedon directing, what do you think the difference would be? Big bucks, that's what. But truth be told, when this is all said & done, Trank's name is gonna be synonymous with TANK.  Rolling Eyes

CHRONICLE showed me some promise. Whatever issues I had with the characterization of Dane DeHaan's character, I thought it was pretty impressive as a debut film and a low budget one at that. I can see why Jordon is cast as Johnny Storm because he has the right kind of levity and swagger, but I don't like how it's being done here. If he's to be black, then so should Sue Storm, yet they didn't do it anyway probably because executives think they needed to at least have one white girl in the main group. That's just half-assing it and at the same time only making Jordon look more like a token black guy. In a strange way, Jordon's casting is the only one that makes sense agewise, the rest are just way too young for me to believe they're anything other than the Fantastic 90210.

I caught a bit of the 2005 film FANTASTIC FOUR on TV not too long ago. I don't remember liking the film when I saw the whole thing long ago, but I do gotta say the cast was just right for that, or at least felt right. Whatever weaknesses in the film-making and script, the cast had the right chemistry. I think it's too bad they did not get an installment that's as good as other classic superhero flicks, because they deserved it.

Jesse Eisenberg Is Lex Empty Re: Jesse Eisenberg Is Lex

Post  Apologist Puncher Thu Jun 19, 2014 6:39 pm

http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/nailbiter111/news/?a=102083

Over the past few days, director Zack Snyder has been filming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice scene involving Lex Luthor and LexCorp. Sources for the website, Batman-News, have informed that site about Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor look and mannerisms.

"It’s not Eisenberg’s typical curly look — it’s a bit longer, kind of loose and wavy, and it’s dirty blonde. Eisenberg’s Luthor has spastic mannerisms, like a 20-something guy that pounds energy drinks all day." - Batman-News

Before a bunch of you fly off the handle Batman-News cautioned that these scenes happen early in the film. So, there's still hope that Lex will become follicly challenged later on in the film.

Sources also told the site about the interior of LexCorp: "I’ve been told it’s “f***ing awesome”. There’s a basketball court in the lobby with a giant 30 foot neon LexCorp industries sign."

Lastly, a few sites have speculated about who Holly Hunter ("Always") is playing in the film and now thanks to Batman-News we've learned that the actress will be playing a United States Senator. Neat!

Usually I wouldn't bring up a post from IMDB, but earlier today syafiqjabar (via DraculaX) described the same scene as well - with a few more details.

"Lex has a super modern-hip Facebook/Google style office with a basketball court, pinball tables, etc. Everyone looks ultra douchey and has bowties and blazers, etc. Lex is introduced in which he takes a basketball shot, and in the same motion, after draining the shot, turns around and shakes a senator's (?) hand, who is there to greet him. He looks like Kurt Cobain, and is a complete douche." - syafiqjabar

I have a feeling something is going to happen that causes Lex's hair-loss. More than likely Kryptonite-related, as I ALSO believe Metallo is going to be one of the villains.

Unsure what to make of this 'take' so far but I do now have reservations about Eisenberg himself. Why? A while back I saw him on David Letterman's show. This film wasn't brought up but the way he carried himself, his seeming douchebag attitude towards how he crafts his acting career, whatever, it just kinda turned me off. Then when I read on SHH his attitude toward Luthor like it was 'just a part' or something, his whole 'non-chalant' attitude, I just dunno. Why didn't they just use Michael Rosenbaum for crying out loud?

A few things. Eisenberg wasn't his typical nebbish self in Now You See Me. Not entirely anyway.

The other thing though is that... honestly, people, Snyder cast and then made Dawn of the Dead. Then Watchmen. Then Man of Steel. Hasn't he earned a little trust by now? I really don't get why people lost their shit over this news report.

Just look to me. I'll tell you when it's time to panic.
