Could it be that actor Tom Cruise is going to be starring in Star Wars: Episode VII and Harrison Ford will be written out of it? Possibly, as Tom Cruise has been in talks with his good friend, J.J. Abrams, to have a cameo appearance in Star Wars: Episode VII, and veteran actor, Harrison Ford, will either need to be filmed from the waist up or written out of the movie, altogether, because of the broken leg he suffered when the pneumatic door of the Millennium Falcon fell on it.

Rather than possibly delay the scheduled release date of the film, it might be more economically feasible for Lucasfilms and Disney to write out the Han Solo character, though his absence will likely be somewhat awkward, unless further rewrites of the script are done.

On June 19, one of Harrison Ford’s reps announced that the surgery on the star’s broken leg had been “successful” and added that Ford “will begin rehab shortly.” That is good news, but it is expected that Harrison Ford might have to be in rehab for 6-8 weeks. Even then, if he appears in the movie, he will probably have to be filmed just from the waist up.

An accident involving the pneumatic door of the iconic Han Solo spaceship, the Millennium Falcon, was responsible for breaking Harrison Ford’s leg. The door of the vehicle came down upon his leg, breaking it. Earlier reports had stated that Ford’s ankle had been injured on the set of Star Wars: Episode VII, but Ford’s publicist later announced that it was not his ankle that was injured, but his leg.

According to The Sun and other sources, Tom Cruise, 51, has been in talks with J.J. Abrams to have a cameo in Star Wars: Episode VII, and it appears as if they have reached an agreement. Cruise could very well have a small, but conceivably important, role in the J.J. Abrams’ directed movie.

A source told The Sun that Tom Cruise “has been in London for over a week” meeting with Abrams and other execs about making a cameo appearance in Star Wars: Episode VII. This could very well be the case, as Cruise has known J.J. Abrams for years and Abrams was the director of the Cruise flick Mission: Impossible 3, released in 2006. Abrams was also one of the co-producers of another Tom Cruise movie, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, which hit theaters in 2011.

The source who was interviewed by The Sun also stated that J.J. Abrams “loves working with Tom whenever he gets the chance.”

Much speculation has revolved around a meeting that was called on Monday morning at Pinewood Studios, in Buckinghamshire, England. Details of the meeting of Disney and Lucasfilms execs have not been revealed, but some of the rumors circulating suggest that one of the topics of the meeting was how to incorporate the Han Solo character in Star Wars: Episode VII without delaying the scheduled release date for the movie of December 18, 2015.

There might have also been talk about the best approach to writing the Han Solo character out of the script, to avoid the more unpleasant necessity that might otherwise occur, of pushing back production and delaying the movie’s release date. This could be a very real possibility, if the sources who spoke to the fan site, Jedi News, can be believed. However, writing out Han Solo from the script could result in an outraged reaction from Star Wars fans, who have been eagerly anticipating the reunion of Han Solo, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), ever since the news was announced that they would all be in Star Wars: Episode VII.

These same fans might be ticked off, though, as well, by any delay in the scheduled release date of Star Wars: Episode VII. Also, Disney would rather not push back the scheduled release dates of other Star Wars movies that are in the planning stages, like a Bobba Fett movie, scheduled for release in 2016, and Star Wars: Episode VIII, due to hit theaters in 2017. Disney Studios has plans for further Star Wars movies all the way through the year 2020.

Another topic of the Monday meeting likely was how best to make use of Tom Cruise in Star Wars: Episode VII. If it is deemed unfeasible to use the acting talents of Harrison Ford because of his broken leg, Tom Cruise might help provide a bit of the missing star power, and his role in the movie could very well be expanded.

Cruise is a fan of science fiction, and he is no stranger to having acted in science fiction flicks before. Other science fiction movies that Tom Cruise has starred in are Minority Report, War of the Worlds, Oblivion, and his current box office hit, Edge of Tomorrow.

Besides Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher returning in the roles that they made famous in the original Star Wars trilogy — assuming that Ford will still be playing Han Solo, that is — three other actors from the original trilogy will also be in Star Wars: Episode VII. They are Peter Mayhew, Anthony Daniels, and Kenny Baker.

Other actors who will be making their own Star Wars history with the film will include Daisy Ridley, Andy Serkis, Max von Sydow, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhall Gleeson, and Oscar Isaac. John Williams, who composed the music for the original Star Wars trilogy, will also be back, composing the music for this sequel. J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan co-wrote the screenplay.
